whamo
So, I'm searching for klipsch deals and last night I found 3 kp301's on the website for daddy's junky music. They're a chain here in the northeast. They wanted 165 each for two of them and 99 for one. So I go there today at lunch and there is only one kp301 and two kp3000 c ??? The kp3000's have a tractix horn and a 15 inch woofer. I pick up these two for 356 w/tax and bring them back to work. I open them up and they're bogus they have apogee woofers and the crossovers look real cheesy. There is also a passive radiator in conjuntion with the vent. Also they're made out of particle board. So it looks to me as if someone took an old cabinet and used some parts (handles, logos, connector block, etc.) and tried to pass them off. Anyways I called and am taking them back. I'm going after work and I am picking up the lone genuine kp 300 for $99. I'll keep it for future use as a center or wait until I find another lone one. colterphoto1
is there anything that says Klipsch inside them? Markings on edge of crossover, midrange driver tag, anything? It might just be a speaker with some repair parts inside, that could be put back to authentic parts for not much money. Put KP3000 in the search and see if anything comes up. colterphoto1
DrWho has worked with some speakers called KP3002's and loves them. I'll see if I can ring him and figure it out. M
whamo
Thanx, but I already took them back. Yes they did have klipsch parts inside like the typical wooden croosover board and such. But the workmanship was really cheesy. Also the things were made of particle board.I called the people at klipsch and the said particle board was never used. And the guy from klipsch couldn't Identify the model either. So I took them back and purchased the lone kp 301 for 99 dollars. Now this speaker is of much higher quality and a steal. Now I need to find another lone kp 301!!!!!!!! Mark

colterphoto1
was it particle board or MDF (much finer grains)? Most modern Klipsch speakers are made of MDF. But good find on that single for $99. You did well. Michael
whamo
No, not mdf. Particle board. Kinda made me mad because I couldn't sleep at all the night b4 thinking about them. I got there before they even opened up the store. They were an impulse buy, I should've investigated them better b4 buying them lol. Duke Spinner
They dont call it "Junky Music" for nothin ya know ... the help here is clueless, too ....[:^)]
DrWho
The 3000 series doesn't use "the typical wooden crossover" either...it's mounted directly to the input terminals on a PCB board. The cabinet is 3/4" (?) plywood - I wanna say thicker, but maybe I'm decieved by the fibreglass finish on the outside. The things are fricken tanks...they've been dropped from 10 feet numerous times and there is no visible damage at all. [H] (no, I wasn't the one dropping them...I always land between the speaker and the floor when such situations arise...I can repair myself given enough time). But ya, to say that I'm a fan is an understatment...they really sound beautiful.
billythekid27858
I used to own a music store and was a Klipsch Professional dealer. Those were actually probably genuine cabinets. Anything with the "-C" extension stood for Carpeted cabinets. These were generally another Klipsch design made with less "pretty" wood like strand board (hence, the reason for the carpet). The non-Klipsch components are probably the result of the previous owner replacing blown components.
whamo
No they were not factory made cabs the motorboard was made out of particle board. Since this post I have purchased 5 KP301's for nice prices and still use them. I believe that klipsch uses an "X" for carpeted cabinets. I may be wrong, You may be wrong who knows.
