Ye Olde Klipsch KG4s

Recommended Posts

So. I have a pair of Klipsch KG4s that I've had in storage for some time. They are pretty dusty and theres some damage to the floor stands, but if they were cleaned up they would be very pretty. Naturally I'm thinking about selling them, since they are more or less just taking up space now.

However, I haven't tested them, but I do know that the tweeters are blown out, and at least one of the woofers has been torn. So the question is... should I even bother cleaning them up and trying to sell them? Or should I just chuck em?

Here's an update on the condition of the speakers:

Indeed, both tweeters are blown out. However, I see replacement tweeters for KG4s on eBay, so they can't be too terrible difficult to come by.

All four 8in woofers are operational and still make nice sound. Interestingly, the rubber part of the woofers is torn on the woofers of the right speaker, yet it appears someone repaired it with electrical tape.... and they sound just as good as the totally undamaged woofers! I'm impressed with that one. I'd remove the electrical tape and repair them properly but with them sounding just fine, I don't want to touch em.

All in all I'm impressed they sound as good as they do, I probably haven't used them for 5+ years.

So what do you guys think? Should I clean em up and eBay em? (speaking of which... I suppose shipping on these would be atrocious, hmm..)

The tag on the back says KG4-WO... I'm assuming that means they are walnut. I wish there was a way I could tell otherwise. Its a darker wood, if that tells you anything.

If you are interested, let me know how much you're willing to pay, and how you plan to get them if you do buy em. I'll clean them up and snap some pictures of em if you would like.

What a shame, the one on the right...............How can you do that to a speaker? Oh well, not mine, mine look like museum pieces after looking at those, tape and all, still probably worth buying, and fixing up......wouldn't pay to ship them though....just me.

That one might look ugly but you'd be impressed with how it sounds. The electrical tape is simply patching up a tear in the rubber surrounds of the woofer. Even so, Klipsch support told me they have replacement KG4 woofers in stock... so that's an option for anyone who's that bothered by electrical tape.

In any case, the cabinets are in good shape.

Welcome!

Without being able to get a good look at the cabinets and grills, these may be a candidate for a freshen up. Parts won't cost all that much for a nice pair of speakers. The KG4 is a good sounding speaker. One of my personal favorites of the KG line. You might want to bring these back up to good operating condition. You can have a nice pair for minimal investment. It's not wasted money by any means. You will easily be able to recoup your investment PLUS after fixin' 'em up. Hey, you might even fall in love with them. Ask the guys(and gals) here on the forum for parts availability. You might luck out.

Just my couple of cents worth.

Oh the thought has crossed my mind of fixing them up but I am afraid I wouldn't want to part ways with them if I did... I have little money as it is.

As I was looking around on eBay, I just noticed there's a new auction up for a pair of fully functioning KG4s that are very pretty, if anyone is interested in that.
