Slots were cut (with matching slots on opposite end) to hold both the extra lead length needed to make connections in the crossover, and the two single pieces that will be used to pull up tight over the coil once it's formed. The coil will then be removed from the bobbin (which you can see comes apart), and wire ties will be used after a quick dipping in varnish (unfortunately not under vacuum).
