  1. Thanks for the tip, Wheelman, I'll look for it.

I think Lindsey Buckingham is one of the best guitarists around.

The live guitar solo on 'Im so Afraid' on 'The Dance' is nothing short

of amazing. It's up there with the solos from 'Aqualung',

'Comfortably Numb', & 'Stairway to Heaven'.

Lindsey seems a lot more 'in tune' to getting a certain sound from a guitar as well as the virtuousity in playing.

Actually, we had 'The Dance' (audio) on yesterday while we were

drywalling the kitchen ceiling. Today, I'm so stiff I can hardly

    move.

  2. I agree with you, Cut-Throat.

I had an earlier thread about

'Ya Gotta Love Jo Jo Walsh' after first watching the Farewell

    Tour.

Then, just this week, we watched it and enjoyed it again, not on the big

HT (still too cold in that room) but on the old 2 channel system by the

woodstove. There are little 'mini-licks' in some of the songs

    that are amazing.

And replacing Felder with anyone would have

been near impossible, but they pulled it off. And the Farewell

Tour is about ten years after HFO already.

  3. Welcome to the forum, Jaggie

Ditto to what Chris above has to say. You mentioned you have an

older amp. Many of the older amps have lots of bite and gonads to

them. There was a lot of premium equipment from those days that

is still sought after. If the amp is in good condition and

running good, hang on to it for a while and concentrate on speakers

first.. Keeping this in mind, you might want to start looking for

some Heresies or something bigger and upgrade the amp later.

Check out your local buy and sell flyers, flea markets, pawn shops and

etc. Every once in a while, someone on the forum finds a Klipsch

bargain. And occasionally, a forum member is upgrading so you

might find something you're looking for listed here. Have

    fun. Hamish

  4. Just to mention, Rigma, that I've been bi-amping

with a couple of Crowns for years. A DC 300A strapped for mono

does the bottom with a D150A doing the mids and tops with a Crown VFX2

doing the crossover points. The top speakers are the Heresys and

the bottom is the sub cabinet with 2 KEF B300 12" woofers. I have

the xovers set for about 100 hz.

I've got one other DC300A strapped for mono doing

the other KEF sub with the HT setup with the Yammie RXV1300 and the

    RF3s.

Years ago, I actually was tri-amping with three

Crowns using the VFX2 for an adjustable mid to hi point and a dbx

subharmonic synthesizer set at 120 doing the bass. Then, (before

Klipsch) I was using KEF components (my subs are DIY leftovers from

that phase and I still love them - actually, in the fall, I just

scored a couple of KEF Cadenzas in a Value Village find - really

an outstanding speaker but thirsty for clean power).

There's a lot of advantages to having your own

adjustable xover points and adjustable volume for different

    drivers. (Lots of disadvantages too).

Biggest advantage is the power where you need it.

Biggest disadvantage is hum and shorts from too many

cables, dirty pot contacts and risk of meltdown by doing something dumb.

  5. not a Klipsch outdoor speaker exactly but here's a story. I've

got the attic in my old house set up as a computer and listening

room. The house sits high on a hill looking over a few blocks

down to a river valley then over to the other side. Once just for

fun, I opened the front window completely, hauled a LaScala up on top

of a trunk and turned it around so it was facing out the window, put

Metallica's Black CD on at moderate volume, then went for a walk.

Down in the valley, you could hear it at background level, but across

the river facing the house again, you could pick up most of the

midrange and a little high end. Later that night, I played a

sound fx recording of an old steam train (tracks long gone from town),

let it rip and then quickly put my toys away.

Hurry spring! I'm up here in a parka right now with a space heater cranked instead.

  6. My pick for all round best recording is Joan Osborne's 'Relish' from

about 10 years ago for quality of voice, instrumentation and

'listenability'. Add to that, Jennifer Warne's collection of

Leonard Cohen songs 'Famous Blue Raincoat' from about twenty years ago.

I find female vocals really test the meddle of a speaker (speaking of

which), I listened to the live tracks from Pink Floyd's 'Ummagumma'

again the other day and found myself cranking it. And then

there's the Yes album and 90125.

  7. My glory days with ebay are over. Now, it's a

minefield. A few weeks ago, I posted a topic about one day's

events with ebay on the forum.

I might look at the listings to find the value or going rate of

an item but I don't want to get burned on phoney sales or phishers

ripping off my id, so I'm done with them.

Paypal is facing competition from banks that are jumping on the direct pay options, so they'll have to smarten up or fade away.

  8. What's your favourite under-rated group or band?

Instead of being famous and remembered, their music

is like a candle being hidden under a bushel basket. Sixties,

seventies, eighties, nineties, now - rock, jazz, blues, folk or

whatever - who should be playing Superbowl half time shows next?

My pick is 'The Collectors' from Vancouver, Canada -

a late sixties band that recorded two albums for Warner Brothers then

morphed into Chilliwack who became the Canadian house band until 'Blue

    Rodeo' came along.

The Collectors were great experimenters utilizing

five part harmony (Lydia Purple), Gregorian chants (What Love Suite)

and sax solos second only to Lou Reed's 'Walk on the Wild Side'.

Apparently, Bill Henderson, one of the original Collectors is still

    touring around somewhere.

    So what's your pick?
