  1. No 12v trigger on the Aragon 2005 amp though.
  2. One of the reviews I read stated that, after taking both of them apart, there are definately different components such as beefier power supply, in the DTC-9.8.
  3. It's good to hear good stuff, but honestly I don't trust stereophile one whit. My Aragon 2005 doesn't have XLR in, maybe it's time for an amp upgrade!!
  4. My new toy, Integra DTC-9.8 pre/pro http://www.integrahometheater.com/model.cfm?m=DTC-9.8&class=Separates&p=i and the first review http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/processor-receiver-product-reviews/ssps/integra-dtc-9.8-thx-ultra2-7.1-ssp.html I can't pick it up till Friday, I'll be doing my own review of course, but all signs point to "sweet". I'm not sure how I feel about the Audyssey; room treatments are the best option for this, but then again it might fix the lower-mid-range drop in my Cornwall center. This will be a fun toy.

I showed this to a group last night, wow! Great movie, great effects, great sound. First time I've rated a movie four stars in a while. I could have stood MORE theorhetical physics being in the plot, but really a great movie even if you are not typically a fan of Sci-Fi.
  6. Yeah I'm not sure if this crew will want to podcast or not, but it might be interesting to do the revealing "live".
  7. They are absolutely better by a huge margin. I've done A/B on several DVDs vs. Blu-Ray; even my wife can tell instantly. Next year I'll get 1080p but BD still makes 720p way better than upconverted DVDs.
  8. That stapler images like you wouldn't believe.
  9. I don't get it till next week so I don't know! I figured it might be problomatic, I'll seek other methods of doing what I want.
  10. You may be interested in the results of this test when it's done: http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/99492.aspx
  11. It would appear my new pre/pro has a handy plug-in where I could plug my amp into it, thereby turning my amp on/off with the pre/pro. This would be handy since my amp doesn't have a 12v trigger and turning on the switch is tons of work[6]. I'm sucking a lot of power to fill a large room w/sound. I'm wondering if anyone had a bad experience using this type of plug for their amps?
  12. I'll try to succinctly answer your questions Sir Roger! Video: Blu-Ray is 1080p on disc. If you display it at resolutions greater or less than 1080p it has to be processed. In my case, my projector down-converts the 1080p to 720p. Sound: Blu-Ray has high definition sound. In simplest terms, they are using a LOT more storage space than DVD in order to make the sound as close to the studio master tape as possible. For either copyright reasons or technical limitations, the CE industry as a whole has decided that the high bitrate sound will ONLY go over HDMI or multichannel analog out. So, if you have Coax or Toslink into your receiver from a high-def source, it is down-mixed. Some of my Fox Blu-Rays have DTS-HD MA that could go as high as 18mb/s but it's downsampled to 1.5mb/s before being sent to the preprocessor. So, in order to get all the high-def sound I'm becoming a victim of the CE industry and upgrading to a new pre/pro with HDMI 1.3 capability.
  13. I should write something that has Klipsch speakers already in it and release it. I have some gui drag/drop software I wrote for work....
  14. el jopez: Regardless of decoding taking place in the receiver or the player, my current gear does not have HDMI capability and that makes it worth the upgrade to me. My current player is the PS3, which does not have analog audio out, so it will decode to PCM and send LPCM to the receiver over HDMI.
  15. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD have (depending on what the studio decided to use): Uncompressed multichannel PCM Dolby Digital + (lossy, slightly higher bitrate) Dolby Digital True HD (lossless, high bitrate) DTS-HD (lossy, high bitrate) DTS-HD MA (lossless, high bitrate)
  16. Mallette: The primary spec we are concerned about here is the average sampling bitrate since these are variable rate codecs. Dolby Digital on DVD shares 640 kb/s worth of sample rate across 6 channels of sound. DTS-HD MA can share up to 18mb/sec with 6 or 8 channels of sound. My test is to see if people can reliably pick out the soundtrack that is better on paper.
  17. Dudes,Assuming my PayPal transaction goes through, I have FINALLY been able to score the HDMI 1.3 Preprocessor I’ve been waiting for. The primary benefit is the super high bitrate sound on high def discs: Dolby Digital TrueHD at 18mb/s vs. DD at 640kb/s, uncompressed PCM, DTS-HD MA etc. As I have alluded to in the past, I’m wondering if you guys would be up for a listening test once I get everything hooked up? The test would consist of scenes from various disks I own in both normal and high-def versions: · Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Perl (DVD Dolby Digital 640kb/s vs. Blu-Ray PCM 5.1 48hkz/24bit) · Cars (DVD Dolby Digital Ex 640kb/s vs. Blu-Ray PCM 5.1 Surround (48kHz/24-bit/6.9mbps)) · Bram Stoker’s Dracula (Superbit DVD DTS-ES 1.5mb/s vs. Blu-Ray 5.1 PCM) · Black Hawk Down (Superbit DVD DTS-ES 1.5mb/s vs. Blu-Ray 5.1 PCM) · Spider Man 2 (Superbit DVD DTS-ES 1.5mb/s vs. Blu-Ray Dolby True HD) The listening test should be easy and fun: 1. I will block the video since Blu-Ray vs. DVD would be a dead giveaway, we will just LISTEN to the same scene from each movie. This will be a single-blind test since I have to switch the discs. I will try to find a tiny little TV to use to navigate the menus. 2. I will have a form to fill out and identify each soundtrack as “A” or “B”; A or B will not always be Blu-Ray, you’ll have to guess. 3. You’ll be asked to choose A or B as being better each time, and why 4. At the end, we’ll reveal what was what and show bitrates etc. I would tenatively be ready to do this test on Saturday January 19th, please let me know if you’re in! I have invited four local people that I know, meaning I have three other seats for any forum members that might be interested. I think this will be seriously fun! Any suggestions on the methodology or suggestions of which scenes to use are welcome. The point, obviously, is to see if people can tell the difference between DVD quality sound and high def sound that is supposedly "identical to the studio master".
  18. The user voting is here on the lower right: http://www.klipschcorner.com/ All the systems are here: http://www.klipschcorner.com/SystemProfiles.aspx It's pretty easy to put your system in there, I encourage everyone to get themselves into the running for 2008. I think in 2008 I'll do "2ch" and "Home Theater" seperately and give some prizes.
  19. I'm extremely interested in this too, germerikan. Could you send me a PM when you have it?
  20. I'm not quite sure what point you seek to make, Dean, but let your reply stand as an eternal monument to my laziness in misquoting my own article.
  21. http://www.klipschcorner.com/BlogDetail.aspx?guid=6405b97a-2b4b-4dbc-9812-0860da467fb4 That KlipschCorner.com editorial staff has picked a winner! I kill me...
  22. CaludeJ1: 1) Klipsch is now the largest Mfg of loudspeakers in the world, so I think you are right in saying they've grown phenomenally. 2) In my interview with Jim Hunter, Jim stated that he "can't see how Paul wouldn't be proud" of the Palladium speakers. Take from that what you will.
  23. I had two microphones going into a mixing board, and the line out going into a small digital recorder. A microphone boom had the mic in between the other two guys and I was holding onto my mic. The digital recorder turned out to be the weak link, and I think the next time I do something like this it will sound far better. Can you provide a link to the mic you are suggesting so I can look at it?
  24. Everyone: I asked DrWho what my next podcast should be about. I can see now that he was correct that talking to Roy about PWK and the Jubilee would be of extreme interest to everyone. I don't know how easy this will be to engineer but I promise I will look into it. Gil: Thank you for your kind words. The microphone is a Behringer studio mic I bought for room measurements. Using a mixing board and piping this straight into the PC via Audacity (thanks for the link doc) produces a far cleaner sound than the digital voice recorder I used for the interview, so I will be using this technique next time. Preston: I wish I had recorded some of my conversations with Mark Kauffman and Jim Hunter on the same day. I really do think somethings from the palladium podcast are being taken out of context. I think MANY of us can recognize that there has been a bias against Horns in the audiophile community despite the many technical advantages of horns. The Palladium line is a way to "show them", those are my words. Also Mark made an interesting comment that I truly hope does not ALSO get taken out of context. This WILL be in my interview with Mark when I get it published. I asked him what the competition for the k-horn was. He said this was an interesting question and we had a conversation about it. He said two fascinating things: people are buying the k-horn with their ears, not their eyes; and, "K-horn buyers are MUSIC fans, not audiophiles." Personally I think the LaScala II is an even better example of this concept. Look at the spec sheet: +- 4db and rolls off at 16khz? That looks "bad" on paper, never mind that most people my age and older cannot HEAR 16khz anymore and my room has more than a 4db effect at various frequencies. The LaScala II sound like freakin live music though! Mark, Jim, and others at Klipsch also talked about how HUGE 2ch is in Europe again, and how vinyl is coming back and bringing 2ch with it. Klipsch is not ignoring the 2ch market. I think it's awesome that those of us on this board debate these things, but recognize that we are a small part of the potential market for Klipsch products overall. The work that Klipsch did to keep the Heritage line from dying in 1999-2000 (details in my soon-to-be-published interviews) should show very clearly that no one is forgetting PWK's legacy. Hell, people in the labs say things like "Are you sure we should be toying with The Man's speaker?" As I told Jim in the interview, one of the reasons I wanted to do this is to let the hardcore fans (that's us) air these thoughts out. I hope I'm not making it worse.
