  1. I actually go to school at UW Madison, but I'm home for the summer. I ended up finding a local place called Audio Ventures, and they advised I replace the drivers. I brought one speaker in, they snatched it up, brought it back, took out the old driver, popped in a new one, ran some tests (with a microphone and some clicking noises... I dunno what they did exactly). Apparently it was a very good match according to the tests, so I took two of them at 60 bucks a pop (more than I wanted to spend, but the cheapest they had) and they didn't charge for labor. These guys were even surprised that Aiwa put crossovers and large magnets into the speakers since apparently Aiwa isn't that great usually. (They were saying I might have the only good set of Aiwa speakers out there... hah). I even tried to get them to repair my SW-12 II subwoofer amp, but they said that the best bet was to contact Klipsch or get an external amplifier. Guess I'll have to fork over that $240 to Klipsch if I want some deeper bass in my music. Overall I'm very happy with the results. The speakers sound much better on the low end, and overall they are the best sounding set of speakers I've had. Audio Ventures Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
  2. Refoaming eh... sounds like the ticket. Thanks for all the help so far. I'll start my search for audio retailers / repairshops in the area who might do such work. In the meantime, does anyone know of any places off the top of their head that do refoaming? Thanks.
  3. I ran across some older AIWA SX-12 speakers (can't seem to find much information on them, they say 100W 8 ohm), but they definitely beat my old PM 2.1's in clarity. The only problem I seem to have is that... while cleaning them off (they haven't been used for a while now), I managed to poke my finger through one of the woofer rubber surrounds... and I was barely touching them ! I have never run across any driver with such brittle rubber surrounds before. I hooked them up to my Yamaha RX-550 and began to test them out (I think they sound fantastic, I can hear things I've never heard before in a lot of songs). As I played more bass heavy music, the rubber surrounds began to tear themselves apart . I assume age has gotten to them and they are just extremely brittle now? I have included an image of the better looking woofer in this post so people can get an idea of what I'm talking about. Anyways, they are 8" 8 ohm woofers, and I now need to replace them. I don't know the frequency range on the driver either, since the back of it just says the model number, AIWA, and 8 ohm. I was thinking one of you Klipsch gurus would know of a driver that might work in its place (100W 8 ohm is what the back of the speaker says). Or perhaps someone could give me a link to a nice 8" 8 ohm driver? I have been searching myself, but I don't exactly know where to look for such things. Would an 8" 4 ohm driver work in its place, or is that bad for the receiver / speaker? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
  4. My Promedias are no more as I'm studying abroad for the next semester and needed some extra $$. I still have the 4.1 Monster Cable Upgrade Kit from the Klipsch Store (Retails for $59.99 + shipping) that I used for 2 sets of 2.1's. If anyone is interested in it... I could let it go for $49.99, UPS Ground shipping included - continental US only. Grand total that'd be a 10 dollar discount + whatever shipping costs from the normal retail price. E-mail me at vexeus@yahoo.com or leave a message here. We could do it through eBay or something of that sort if it makes you feel safer. I accept paypal. Thanks.
  5. Everything appeared to be hooked up correctly when I opened her up. All wires were connected etc etc. The amp didn't appear to have anything wrong with it, but that was just a quick glance over, and I'm no electronics guru. I tried the RCA inputs through the subwoofer out on my computer soundcard, and I also hauled it up to a friends to have him try it with his receiver. Neither seemed to get any output, just the normal fuzz noise it has when you put your ear up to it. I think I'll be taking it to a local electronics store or calling Klipsch up cause it seems to be an amp problem. Thanks for the input though.
  6. Recently, I bought an SW-12 II without knowing if it was working or not. I pretty much expected it to be non-working since I got it for a very nice price of $75 US. It is also in very good condition cosmetically. Sure enough, when I hooked it up, it was not working. I power it up, the green LED on the front comes on, and if I put my ear close to the active woofer, I can hear a slight buzzing noise (like it's receiving power). If I leave it on for 30 minutes or so, the heatsink begins to give off heat as well. However, when I play music, nothing happens. There is no movement of the woofer, and the sound does not change at all no matter what the volume settings. I am curious if anyone can give me any sort of diagnosis as to what is wrong (amp / inputs / woofer / etc), or if I need more information before that can be determined. Am I better off just bringing it to a certified Klipsch dealer and asking them to repair it, or would they most likely not do that? Would Klipsch repair it if I called them up? Thanks.
  7. Let me first start by saying that this stuff really interests me, but I don't understand the technical jargon at all, and would like to. Could anyone here help me understand the meaning of a couple things? I understand the Hz rating is in reference to the sound waves / second... lower Hz means more "bass" like sound, and we cannot hear below approx 20Hz. Correct me if I'm wrong on this. Now here's what's really bothering me. I see all these dB ratings for speakers... 94, 96, 102, 106... etc. I am at the understanding that dB means decibel, and the higher the rating, the louder it is. Should this really concern someone such as myself who never cranks their speakers past the halfway point? In relation to dB again, take this link for example: Polk Audio RTi12 It now talks about the Lower (-3dB) Limit for 30Hz and 26KHz... what does this mean? The speakers are rated at 18Hz but they're down to -3dB at 30Hz, would this not imply it's inaudible at -3dB and 30Hz, or is the decibel scale wacky? Basically I think I just need an overview of dB Sorry for the n00bish questions, just tryin to figure this stuff out, and what to look for when purchasing new speakers. Thanks!
  8. Actually, I have optical sp/dif out so I could just use that connection from the sound card to the DD-5.1, right?
  9. I've already asked Justin on this one, but I'd like some second opinions anyways. I have a 4.2 setup, and would like to get rid of my preamps if at all possible, and just use the DD-5.1 in their place. This is what I came up with, anyone know if it'll work or have any suggestions as to how I could accomplish this? http://www.geocities.com/vexeus/schematic.htm Thanks.
  10. So if I buy the CP-1 and a splitter, then it's possible to control both from the CP-1 and there's no need for the DD-5.1 or keyspan? Are there any downsides to this? Thx.
  11. Forgive my ignorance, but what is the keyspan? Also, I'm not really worried about voiding the warranty, I bought these a long time ago and the 12 month warranty that came with them has long expired. Thanks.
  12. What if I were to hook up the ProMedia DD-5.1? Would that be a solution? Link: http://store.klipsch.com/details.asp?ProdID=8 Thanks.
  13. Curious if there is any way I can set up all 4 satellites and both subs through 1 volume control (possibly remote controlled)? My sound card is an audigy 2 if that makes a difference. I'm not really sure where to start, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
