  1. I have access to laptops, mics, etc but not an actual RTA. Anyone know a cheap way to do one?
  2. I didn't know about Radio Shack SPL meter having a correction factor. I tested with ARIA....my numbers may be off. I am thinking though I am getting exactly what they put in specs now. edit: original post:I am not corner loaded and in my room I am down -8db at 22-23Hz...still up at 24-25 about -3db from my 80dB level, this is on an actual SPL meter.
  3. Never tested it against none. Some subs do the connections internally, some don't. You never really fail at having both connected and sometimes even gain (on older subs usually only now).
  4. the multimeter would have to be connected to each driver to test really...not practical for this kind of thing. How much is the score costing you?
  5. Yeah I am happy. I know of friends that have more low systems, but none of theirs are as balanced as mine esp now post-subwoofer addition. My wife says it's painful at their homes to watch...although at times she says mine is too during dynamic scenes only though. Their's she says it feels like she is drowning. For cables, http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10236&cs_id=1023603 is hard to beat. Nice quality. I picked up their Y-adapter and a 25 and 35' RCA...the 25' ended up just perfect with just enough slack at the reciever and sub end. I was worried I was going to be too tight, but at their prices I just ordered the extra one I have had one bad cable from them out of about 100 orders...I received a replacement within a week. My total cost for a 6" Y, 25' RCA and 35' RCA was only about $26. I'd have loved to have the dough to blow on a $300+ interconnect (and I have in my days) and not worry if what got sent to me would be good, but monoprice always comes through with a much better bang for buck than I expected.
  6. How old are the speakers? Could be electronics inside.
  7. Just coming back to confirm what I did. I first used the YPAO to get a baseline... I set all the speakers small even though my Yamaha insists on making them Large if I let it set them up automatically. Sounds more open/less fatigued for lack of a better term....more realistic. I crossed it at 80Hz. They Yamaha picked 40Hz. I am able to easily hit 80dB on my SPL meter and balanced everything out. I did bump up the sub level on the unit. The RS25's took a bit of tweaking as well. The Yamaha seems to want to set them to -3dB.
  8. I have my Ultra 12 in place now. I am running it behind the listening area along the back wall about 18" away from the corner. Room size is roughly 14x20x7, closed type floor plan. I have an Yamaha HTR-5960, Academy, Quartets and RS25s. At anything above 3.5 on the subs volume my Yamaha complains that the level is too high. This is sort of good as it leaves a lot of headroom in the amp section. Once I dialed everything it I got 80dB across the board pretty easy on the rest of my gear. Music and movies have much more presence now. It's amazing the low end that was missing. I don't think there is was a better choice new or used at the $350 price and 15ish cube size points. Most of use have a limit to what we can accept based on size and money in our rooms. I have to still measure with my SPL meter when the wife is out of the house, but I am getting down to low 25Hz...probably at -3dB. If I boost the sub volume I can hit 23Hz but that's probably -6dB. IMHO this is about where this sized 12" sealed sub should be. It compared to the STF-2 by HSU, but I think it has a bit more presence. I didn't A/B test it in the same room though nor home. If one was willing to nearly double their price HSU has subs that are bigger yet may give you 3-5Hz only if you are lucky (and this would be at -3-6dB as well). I wanted to try eDesign's A2-300, but I wasn't crazy about the finish nor wait time. If I was spending $600, I'd have really tried to find a A3-300 or A5s-300 locally to sit with. These two are crowd favorites. Again much bigger and you have a long wait time to get them. I am happy with this and my wife is as well.
  9. I have owned my Quartets for 15 years...My academy came later (although my first was purchased with my Quartets). Just picked up BEC's and his mid and tweeter diaphragms. Holy moly even my wife commented on it. Deeper bass, clear mids...the highs are awesome now. Used to seem a bit cut off. Now on the search for some cheap white RS-7's
  10. I need to play with settings more, I had LFE set to Sub + Mains, but I am reading that is not the way to go and I should also set my Quartets and Academy as 'SMALL' speakers. Anyone got opinions on this? Chris
  11. Only did a quick watch of WALL-E and my AVIA disc since I was on lunch, but it sounds really decent. I have the reciever set at 80Hz and anything over 3.5 volume on the sub gave me a warning of "SUB LEVEL TOO HIGH". I am happy. Should I continue to run LFE to my Quartets as well? I can set it to Sub only, Mains only, or Both.
  12. Have an order coming from our Bob Crites. Chris Munson is no longer building . Decided to go all new networks and replace my mid and tweeter diaphragms. Hopefully get another 20 years out. I have had my Quartets since 1997.
  13. I am not sure who is still doing this other than Bob. Back in 2005/2006 I contacted a few of our members out there and found at the time I didn't really need it...however I think now my sound isn't up to par as some other Klipsch I have heard. I am going to follow back up to my old emails and see, but I figured posting this may help others that just don't know. I have a set of Quartets and Academy...my dad just picked up a set of Chorus II and I think has an Academy en route now . I want to do diaphrams and the networks. I think I'd rather have the networks pre-made as I am short on time lately and could be doing WAF projects. Also has the A/B test of a KStack vs others ever been done yet? I have always been curious by the raves Popbumper got. They are a bit out of my price league for now, but have always been interesting to me. Let me know, thanks Chris
  14. I can agree not all apartments are created equal. Down here in S. Florida unless you are in a pretty high end condo or townhome even non-theater loudness can be heard between walls. With a smaller sub you may be able to get by without disturbing a neighbor. Any real low sub (<20Hz) at pretty much even 1 watt of power is going to create a soundwave that will carry into the next room in all but the most fortified of construction.
  15. Just higher. Straight on is good. On that already thread already as well.
  16. That kind of setup is overkill for an apartment sadly. Basic bass waves are long enough that at almost any level 'subwoofer' sound will be felt. In the end it depends on neighbors...I ended up getting rid of my Academy back in the mid 90's when I divorced because with my simple Yamaha HTR-1090 and Quartets/PSB300's I was creating issues. Wish I never sold that Academy...took almost 10 years to find another as right after their prices hit $600+ (I sold mine with box and manual in mint condition for $175.
  17. Pulled the trigger on the Emotiva Ultra 12. I was looking at the 'crowd favorites' STF2 and A2-300 but they would be more money or larger or possibly not as friendly with music. My room volume is about 2000 cu. ft. so nice, but not too crazy. If this doesn't work out I am sure I can sell it for close to break even and move up to a serious sub closer to $1000 and take the WAF hit. My dad also picked up one to go with his Chorus II's and Academy in a room around 2700 cu. ft. Have my Sub cable and Y adapter already coming from Monoprice I still want to build some risers...does anyone have a link / how to for Quartets or similar speakers? Thanks
  18. Newegg has the sub 12 for $349 shipped. What would be better?
  19. I am thinking the sub 12 now. I almost bought one when they were new. I don't really need a sub for music. This would be almost entirely dedicated to HT. I saw these for as low as $125 local pickup. I couldn't build one for that. Maybe get one now and later reuse the amp for a deeper build if I need it.
  20. Thanks...don't know if my riser idea will work as I really shouldn't raise them anymore than 7 inches. I may just build risers and then do one of these cubes off to the right. A pair of subs would be a bit overkill and I doubt I'd get enough volume on the left side to get really deep.
  21. The 11" is not bad at all, the 4x4' is not so I could go about 32" wide and 26" deep...but that is a real maximum measurement. It'd box out the area to the left of my cabinet to wall.
  22. Never said they were going to be just $250 each if that's not what it's going to take. If I came in at $3000 then I'd probably hear why not upgrade the Quartets at that point. I may need to DIY this as I need a base of about 16x13 roughly to support each quartet.
  23. under $500 would be nice...not a necessity i cant corner load based on room though, front firing may be too high.
