  1. Let's see if I can answer those questions in order.

I bought the Jensens from a guy on Ebay. I've bought from him several times before. The prices are similar to Parts Connexion with cheaper, faster shipping.

Lisa, I don't run AAs. I am using ALK Universal Type As and tweeter attenuators. I was told the other night that I have "The best sounding system in Rhode Island." from a guy whose system is no slouch.

Mac amps have a reputation of being a "warm" amp. That means that the bass is slightly emphasized and the overall tone is not sharply "etched" smoothing the mids. It is not a sound that everyone likes (what is?) but, many find the combo with sharply etched horns "musical". I find the 6550/KT-88 tubes to inherently possess an etched quality. To me, the additional warmth should be welcome. Craig uses his own, proprietary, circuit to get the best sound from the KT-88s in his VRDs.

Dean has built a couple of Jensen capped networks I think.

Robert, Shannon incorporated an adjustable feedback feature into his ST-35 plans. I like that feature. His instructions state:

"Adjust the feedback for the best square wave at 500 Hz but let your ears be the final judge." That assumes that one has a signal generator and O-scope which I do. The ear part allows all to get the best sound from the little amp.

Plus, Craig has been chiding us all to reduce the NFB on these boards from any source. The pot allows for up to almost complete elimination of NFB up to the design specs.

  2. If you can, find a Vifa that matches the parameters at PE. Vifa make very nice dome tweeters IMO. Smoother, not pushy hot like some of the others..

Do the speakers have treble controls on the back? If they do, it makes sensitivity matching much easier.

  3. I would rather have globle warming than globle cooling....Can you imagine what 100ft thick glacial ice would look like in your driveway?

Where I live, was at the edge of a mile thick glacier Maron. I wouldn't want to shovel that!

I live a mile from the coast. Back then, the coast was 75 nautical miles further south. That coast line is now about 80 fathoms under water.

  4. Rick,

How would you explain the difference between the Auricaps, Hovlands, and the Jensens? Have you heard all three?

Hovelands are what Mark uses in the BB. A merger of the other brands. Of the others, the Auricaps seem to have a faster SS like attack edge but without the grain, the Jensens seem smoother across the band with a warmer Mac like bass. The difference that a tapestry might make on the back wall.

  5. What the olg guy said about ice melting. Calcium cloride is the chemical the states use near reservoirs and other water sources because of it's benign nature. And, it's kind to concrete.

Ashes from the fireplace spread out helps to absorb more solar energy as it is darker. The ashes also prevent some slipping.

  6. normally, i'd offer another option--moving to southern california; however, this past week hasn't been too warm here either. when i was in the coast guard, i was on an ice-breaking ship, so despite my current locale, i've experienced some bitter cold.

    hang in there.

Snow in Texas, ice in Sothern California. Thank God for global warming!

  7. Yeah! What Dean said! I must have at least two thousand hours if not three on the Jensens in my 300B SET amp. It still sounds better than many more expensive SET amps I have heard. I have one of my amps on 24/7 most days with music playing about 20 of those hours. That's why I rotate them like tires.

The spec quoted must be max voltage/temperature rating. They last more than ten days fer sure.

I'm heming and hawing myself as to wether to put Jensens in my new Dynaclone boards. I have 4 new 0.1uFs in the back room already. I would need to buy 2 0.22s to trick it out in copper.

    Try 'em. You'll like 'em.

  8. MMMMMMMMMM. seared Ahi Tuna...are those Yellowfin?

    BS

Si, si senior! Yummy! The one I'm holding was about 200#s the two I'm stradling closer to 300.

Naturally, I had to sell most of those, too much to eat and I had to pay for the gas! I got enough steaks and sushi from just the heads for me to eat and give away to my friends.

We don't have catfish that big up here.( The only catfish I've ever caught are "bullheads" (horned trout).with a 2# fish being large.

  9. Well at least the guy used Klipsch parts unlike the many Klipsch fans around here who mod their Klipsches into JBLs and Altecs and God knows what else with Klipsch badges.

No doubt the guy likes the speakers, you fellas ought'a know Berenek's Law by now.

Besides, it probably has more extended highs than a Khorn and one can reasonably argue that with it's tractrix midrange horn it might have midrange one would prefer. And like I said, at least it's a KLIPSCH midrange horn and driver isn't it?

Yes Tom, God knows what horns are in my Khorn's tophats, And, he made them sound Heavenly!

Out of respect, my Klipsch badges are still on the K-400/K-77 motor boards in the back room.

  10. Those are your LaScalas Pauln. If it makes you happy, that is what matters.

That said, I have my doubts. Much time was given developing the AL-4 network to compensate for some of the weaknesses inherent in the new K-55. Without some help, it starts to peter out well before the 6KHz crossover frequency of the Type A. Without some help, it has an annoying return centered at 9KHz. With that in mind, enjoy your simpler Type As. I just would recommend that you keep the AL-4s, "just in case".
