  1. Has anyone ever considered film dipping chassis plates? All this talk has me wondering. There are many different finishes available via this method.

This is the method with which camo pattern are applied to things like archery equipment (aluminum) and gun stocks (plastic).

This nice web site is from a company is in Australia. There are US companies that perform these services. Even color chrome can be done with this process.

  2. Except the early eighties solder lug and K-55M, the other K-55s drop off starting around 4500Hz so a bit of overlap from the tweeter is a good thing to have. Al's extreme slope slams the door at 5800Hz between the drivers. I just don't know.

Talk to Al. If you stay with the ALK As, ask him about a tweeter autoformer to better match the JBL to the Klipsch efficiency. The attenuator is part of the extreme slope network.

  3. ..."most folks typically worry about squawker horn and then worry about the squawker driver. The choice of horn will probably (I said probably) make a larger difference (I said difference not necessarily an improvement) rather than the driver. I would not limit yourself to just JBL products."

I know that Martinelli and AlK have wooden horns used with Khorns. Al's cost about $500 a pair, whereas the Matinelli horn costs more than $1000 a piece. Would you recommend either of these as a squawker replacement?

Most definately. Al's horns are "bolt on" replacements and really open up the K-55.

I made my own tractrix squaker horns, like the first ones Al built for himself, running K-55s and mate them up with ALK Type A replacement crossovers and JBL 2404h tweeters. The sound is so nice, I don't feel the need to "upgrade" any further.

  4. Wayne, Congradulations on the new you!! You've done a great job with mucho courage.

I lost 50 pounds in the past year and a half. No surgery, elective surgery is off the table for me. No, I had to pick up the "habit" again. That's not good for me either.[:(] At least now I can walk a few miles without excrutiating hip and back pain. Like you, that last ten pounds don't seem to want to melt. That's my resolution this year, then I can re-quit for a while.

If it gets to the point where I need a transplant, I need to be smoke free for at least three months.

I'm making stuffed peppers, baba ghanooge and red lentle soup for dinner tonight.

    Keep up the good work!

  5. "I dunno Rick, my local audio buddie Dan designed a rather good front end circuit for a 45/2A3/300B output tube. The 6EA7 with the bridged Allied interstage transformer.

Ol' Dan's a retired EE, worked at Magnavox, blah, blah, blah.....he ain't the type to just throw stuff together by ear, or the tune for maximum smoke approach. He doesn't disagree with that, he just feels a helluva lot of time can be saved by breadboarding, measuring, and testing. Then listening once it passes the bench test."

Then we will add Dan to the list Mike!! There are more like, Vladimar Lamm, Dennis Had, Eva Manley, Brian Cherry, Mark Rosenblatt to drop a few more well known names.

  6. Bill, Is that your showroom? Very nicely done. Do you have more pics?

Sorry, I already have a pair of Corns.[;)]

I wonder what the voltage rating on that white and blue cap is? PWK didn't "waste" a lot of money on caps as those little black 2uF motor runs show. My guess is that it is another variety of motor run. Modern caps could definately smooth out those Corns and allow more detail through.

One does not want to smooth them out too much though. Other than "elevator music" groups, live music is never bland.

  7. No sir! I stand by my basic point, the 2A3 is a better sounding tube than the KT-88 from the git go. You can dress up a cow, but in the end, it is still a cow.[;)]

As I type, I am listening to my $200 Chinese 2A3 SET amp loaded with Jensen Coppers and NOS RCAs. There is a guy on A'gon selling the same amp for a grand!!! My jaw dropped. Oh yeah, his has a gold plated VC knob. LOL

  8. i recently moved to a pair of 2a3 push pull design mono amps and i have to give the thumbs up on them for sound and just to put that price in perspective my sun audio 2a3 pp cost near twice what he is asking for the wrights, i can also say they definately have more oomph in the bottom end

    Joe

Joe when you say Oomph what exactly do you mean? I bet the better word might be "bloom" ?

    Craig

Craig, have you ever heard a 2A3 PP amp with quality iron? Oomph compared to a 2A3 SET while retaining the "liquidity" of the triode. No it's not the slam at the bottom of a KT-88 PP. The overall listenability is better though even with the pentode strapped in pseudo-triode mode.

The power difference between KT-88 PP in triode mode and the 2A3 PP is not enough to make a large difference. 20 vs 30 watts is what? 1.5Db or less?

  9. Very early on in my career on this forum I decided a tag line that would cover my *** would be a good idea.

If I look at my early posts and my later posts I think I have moved far more than Mark in a similar time period. Thankfully - my sig says I can.

I think I might start renting it out for some of the longer serving members.....

There is a big difference between changing one's opinions (what one believes to be so) and changing the facts (what is so). We're dealing with both here. Factual contradictions cannot be reconciled or just skipped over and explained away as changing one's mind.

"People take the dogma - such as eliminate feedback, then they modify a circuit which was never intended to operate that way, hear a lot of "euphonic" effects, and proclaim it is a universal fix. I know there are some SET amps which have 5% 2nd order harmonic distortion - very euphonic - and people swoon over this. Other people can actually hear the tonal effects of 5% distortion and think it sucks. So? I guess the dogma is more fun? "

Besides giving MH a dig for his "perfect by God" HF-81 in the ensuing paragraph, the above statement is 100% accurate. Some "purists" have modified their ultralinear amps, mostly Dynacos, by running in pseudo-triode mode and removing feedback to the point of excessive distortion. These amps were never engineered to run with zero feedback as they were inherently unstable. True, modern designs and components can reduce the amount of feedback required for stability, bandwidth and tone the key word here-in reduce.

It is quite another thing entirely to engineer from the ground up a zero feedback true triode, high gain circuit, carefully selecting components to allow full frequency response in a stable design. I know that I am unable to engineer such a feat Mr Parrot, can you? Can your Patron Saint?

    In short, can it!

  10. Old Buck,

Why drive a Porsche when any old car will get you down the road? Driving is the fun part, having a car just let's you do it.

Because I can........................Why do you need Klipsch speakers, when other speakers do the same thing, they reproduce music too? No seriously Parrot, this hobby is much deeper than I ever thought possible, can become quite costly, and quite frankly, I think I have reached my limit on how deep to jump in, modding speakers, rolling tubes, tubed CD players, thousands of dollars for Record playing equipment, I am beginning to see this is out of my league..................It's the GOOD people on this forum that keeps me here, not the equipment. There are many good ideas shared here, information, a helping hand from time to time, folks seem to care here, and that means more to me than what equipment to buy.

PARROT, by the way...................I'm fixin' to buy that NEW Bob Dylan Album............Go Figure..................My opinion hasn't changed though...........

OB, You've been around here long enough to notice that there is a strong contingent that advocates getting the most fidelity from the least outlay. Some of us do go a bit over the top. Myself, I've been accused of having more money than brains and I don't have much money;^)

But then, I enjoy building and tinkering with things although the thinking, planning and dreaming are often more rewarding than the actual ends.

If you enjoy your system and it helps relieve the pressures of the world, you've got it made!

    Rick

  11. Ahh, I see. You know based on your comments over the past couple years about these amps with BBX I have recommended them to many of my customers looking for "that kind" of amplification. So far, no one has called me back to complain!

  12. I so want to try a pair of these (or wooden salad bowls). Does anyone know if a more cost-effective alternative for those of us on shoestring budgets? They needn't be framed for the K-horn tophats, as my K-horns are bass cabinets only anyway, and my 511 horns are just sitting on top right now anyway. I like the sound I'm getting at the moment, but at higher volumes it gets a little ringy. Sounds like the Trachorns might be just the thing.

    Thanks!

ALK trachorns based on an Edgar design fit the bill. http://www.alkeng.com/

Or build your own using the flare and jig described in Dr Edgars "Speaker Builder" article using bendable plywood for about a hundred. http://www.volvotreter.de/dl-section.htm
