  1. Woodog visited tonight, taking in the new LaScala's (97's with AL-3's) and while they sounded pretty darn good, both "Woo" and I were rather taken in by this B&K amplifier. Rather warm, stunning, and very clear. I'm giving a solid thumbs up to this equipment: Woo may want to chime in.

Yeah I do. Great sounding system. I mentioned a big nod to solid state in the other thread. Sounds great - warm and engaging - and rock solid imaging. I really like feeling the muscle of that amp too. Feels like it could reach inside of you, shake you, and still have room for more. Those LaScalas are very pretty and they match the ambience of your fine sounding room, too AND they load the room very easily. Ya done good with those!

I'll bet Colter is asking about those lonely Corns. That IS why he made you get the LaScalas. [:P]

  2. Wow.. you lucky dawg, you. Grisman is one of the greats, that's for sure. I recently purchased the DGQ20, a 20 year perspective. Fun stuff. My introduction to Tony Rice was on the 1976 release 'David Grisman Quintet'.

ANYTHING he puts out is exceptional.

    Thanks for the report!

  3. Initial impressions

I'm going to give this a couple of weeks, but I can tell you that the bass is amazing. There is quite a bit of warmth, not harsh, at all. Soundstage appears to open up a little as volume is increased, not sure of that, but just a hunch. Woodog will need to check it out.

    Looking forward to it!

  4. Last week when I was apart from my beloved sound system I bought a few discs, and the one I will recommend here is the DGQ20 (David Grisman Quintet 20 year retrospective 1976 - 1996).

Thebes, you mentioned the wonderful synergy of Klipsch speakers and stringed instruments, and this collection of 3 discs is outstanding!.

You can hear the formative years of this quintet with the young bludgrass picker Tony Rice through jazzy stylings with veteran jazz violinist Stephane Grapelli and many many players who are a who's who of the acoustic 'scene'.

You can also hear the advances in recording technique from the 'early years' to the later ones. Grisman has always been a proponent of analog tape, but it is evident by the later tracks that he has the mastering process down pat.

From live (and raw) cuts to studio productions, from straight ahead bluegrass to jazz swing with a twist, this compilation has it.

Available from Acoustic Disc, David Grisman's own production company.

p.s. I'm really glad these recurring threads are here. I've been steered to so many good music purchases through them.

  5. Yet for me, half the fun of this hobby is trying new set-ups.

    Peace,

    TommyK

I understand this! For me it is different shades of 'excellent' that I enjoy. I like to visit stereo shops and hear the 'best they've got' to experience a different flavor of excellent. that's also one of the reasons I enjoy forum get-togethers so much. Flks show up with their best gear and we get to listen and play and plot what our next excellent system will be.

I recently went to Upstairs Audio in Columbia, SC and listened to the best they had, a pair of Totem Mani-2 driven with a beast of a tube amplifier, a 100 wpc Acoustic Research 6550 based behemoth. It was truly an engaging sound, but at $10,000+ not *THAT* engaging.

Yeah, half the fun is trying new setups, and you don't even have to spend that much if you're careful, patient, and lucky.

  6. Interesting thread in that a voice is able to be 'played' only by the owner. A guitar in the hands of Wes Montgomery would be played completely diffently than in the hands of Tony Rice.

Bobby McFerrin comes to mind as one of the finest vocalists around today. He's well educated, vocally facile, idiomatically versatile and armed with a long long list of accomplishments. However, my favorite vocalist is a young woman at my church, Amanda Biggs, who possesses the finest soprano voice I've ever heard - live or on recordings. From opera to pop music, the woman can SING!

  7. Hey Larry, ..it's OK these guys always joke like that.

I guess that's a big bonus when you do business from Craig/NOSvalves....he will be there to help in the long run.

not only that, but he's fascinated with the stuff, and I think that's a very cool aspect of his approach. He's always trying to push the limit to get better sound.

Oh, and I don't think Dean was joking. [;)]

  8. I recently bought Craig's (NosValves') old Scott 130 preamp from forum member Steve who had owned it for the past 2 years. I had to have one after hearing Seadog's 130 in Hope at the Heritage gathering. (I'm sick that way)

When I got it home on Sunday there was no sound and I was so bummed. Something had happened during shipping, but I didn't know what it was. All I knew was that all but one of the preamp tubes weren't firing up. I was going to pack it up and send it to Craig today, but I called him first.

He told me to get out my multimeter, remove the rectifier tube so I wouldn't fry myself, and then he patiently walked me through a power supply diagnostic.

The result was a quick and simple fix involving a $2 part from the local TV repair shop, a little solder, and 45 minutes. The preamp is singing away (fine, fine sound) as I type and I learned something in the process.

Thanks a BUNCH, Craig, I really appreciate everything!

  9. I'm going through audio withdrawal this week. Seriously, The only audio I've been hearing is the stock radio in my '96 Ford Escort.

    ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Ah well, I've got a new audio toy on the way and yesterday I went to one of my old haunts of college days past, a used record (and now CD) store called Papa Jazz...

I picked up these Jimmy Smith CDs based on what I've read in the forum these past years

Jimmy Smith: 'The Sermon' and 'Back at the Chicken Shack'

Dire Straights: Brothers in Arms (I heard a cut from this at the Hope gathering... beautiful sound)

David Grisman Quintet (a CD mastered from a 1976 analog session) bound to be good.

Can't wait to get back to my khorns!

You don't know how addicted you are until the sound ain't there.

  10. Hi Woo , wstrikland " Billy " lives in Columbia . I live in Charleston about an hour and a half away . Hey the water temp. here has dropped to 80 degrees , maybe you should come down for a swim . I do have a couple extra surfboards as well .[ip]

Hey SBW, thanks for the invite, but I am going to Conway/Myrtle Beach area today (rain later this week, I'm afraid) since my brother lives there and he recently got a new house. I do like Charleston, just no time for the extra trip this time.

Gavin (my son) brought along Josh, his friend, and Josh has never seen the ocean, so I thought that might be a treat for him - especially this time of year when it's not knee-deep in tourists - plus I wanted to see my brother's new digs.

I did get a Klipsh fix yesterday as I was driving around 5 points in Columbia yesterday. I saw a neon sign "Klipsch SPKRS" and a poster "Legend in Sound" and I went into a shop there (Frawley's). Mr. Frawley must be in his 80's and had lots (LOTS) of RB and RF series about, a couple of pairs of Heresys and in the backroom there was a pair of Khorns! It is a really cluttered shop but he showed off his systems to me and talked about Paul Klipsch and showed me some of the correspondence he had had with him. It was a bunch of fun.

My kid's face dropped when he saw the sign and he leaned over to Josh and said, 'we'll never get him out of there'. LOL

Again, thanks for the invite, but I don't think I can swing Charleston this time out. Another time!

  11. Daniel,

    Welcome to the forum.

In the years since their manufacture in 1977, the capacitors in the balancing networks will have drifted off spec and have become at least somewhat resistive.

To replace those caps with fresh parts of the same value... and WOW, you will have speakers sounding like the came right out of the factory.

I have been amazed at the difference and improvement in sound this small bit of work can reveal.

Bob Crites, "BEC" on this forum is one of several persons who could rebuild them for you, or possibly ship the parts if you wanted to DIY the project.

Listen to him. He speaks the truth. I've heard. I believe.[:)]

  12. Anyone around the Columbia/Camden/Florence/Sumpter area?

I'd love to hear your system if you'd be willing to show it off! I promise I'll not move any speakers around. [:)]

Seriously, I'm in South Carolina, state of my birth and some 27 years, to help my mom out after hip surgery. She's doing fine for 73 years old. I have some time and thought if I could get my schedule together with anyone out there it would be cool to listen to someone else's setup.

    PM, etc.

    Thanks,

    Woodog
