  1. Congrats Danny! I know what you mean about the sound. The first time I heard Khorns were after they were in my room. OMG is right!

A little trivia about those wonderful vertical Cornwalls Edster has there... I decided to get Cornwalls in May of 2003, Edster had bought those Cornwalls a tad earlier (I think March) from a lady who works two floors below me for an insanely low amount.

p.s. I also wonder why Ed would move those khorns.

  2. Edgar Meyer? I'll have to check him out--

Since you are already into Bela Fleck, a great suggestion for Edgar Meyer's contributions would be

Strength in Numbers (The Telluride Sessions) (Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyers, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Mark Oconnor and others.. very good acoustic music)

Tales from the Acoustic Planet, Vol. 2 (Edgar Meyer and Victor Wooten are both on this one... one cut has them both playing ... very satisfying listening)

  3. After hearing my set amps on the cornwalls in Hope I understand why some people really don't like them. They sounded totally different than on my Belles at home in my room. They most definitely require the higher efficiency speakers and totally horn loaded heritage line especially for the bass. I was glad to have the opportunity to hear this for myself thanks again guys.

I'm not sure what it is about tube amplifiers I like so much perhaps it's part nostalgia. I really enjoyed the Fisher, Scott and especially dynaco amps that I heard in hope.

Dude... your amps were intoxicating to me. I TOTALLY understood what the hype was when I heard them! 2 points... the room was LARGE and the Cornwalls are, of course, less efficient than the fully horn loaded systems. And even though everyone got quiet for the two pieces I wanted to listen to (thanks) there was still background noise that messed with me. I would have loved to hear your amps on the Jubilee, for instance, or even my Khorns in my much smaller, nearly silent space. (I'll email you my shipping address... I'll expect delivery next week, LOL).

It was a different flavor of ice cream, and if I had the jack I would own a pair. Same with those Dynaco MKIII's (whew!). I get the hype now. Delicious sound... oh so tasty.

  4. Dee,

Woodog brought over his Scott pre today for use with the Dynaco. It certainly cut the edge on that CD direct deal, softened things up a bit and it had a loudness button! Sounded wonderful!

The preamp did sound nice, but to be honest I was wondering what was it about the sound of the CD player --> ST70 sound he didn't like. It was full, rich, ballsy, and, well, just fine overall. The ST70 gave rock solid imaging and a much needed crystal shine vs. the solid state I had heard previously. My preamp helped a little, but certainly not $500.00 worth of 'little'.

    my $.02,

  5. I have a chance to buy a pair of 1983 Cornwalls CWO S/N 34 Y 415 and 34 Y 421. They are local and he is asking $1,100 which seems high. He says they are 9 on a scale of 10. I have not seen them yet and would like to have the forum's opinion of their value before going to see them so I will be in a position to make a cash offer on the spot. These would be Cornwalls not Cornwall IIs correct?

    rigma

Cornwall I's most definitely. Value is hard to access... I live an hour to the north of you, and got my first Cornwalls from a seller in Nashville. $600. They were less than stellar condition; however, as with most Cornwalls, the sound was/is glorious (especially with upgraded crossovers).

I think that if you allow yourself the opportunity to drive 4 hours (one way), then the market for Cornwalls <$800 opens up considerably. On the other hand, if you see these and like them and want them and can afford them, then buy them. [:)]

  6. In the mid '70s, one of the Klipsch reps drove a VW van with a pair of La Scalas in the rear facing forward!

Stereo separation wasn't much but they would sure part your hair.

For those attending the Hollis' Goat Roper "shootout", does anyone remember bringing a CD (on the Columbia label) that had a really strong opening bass line? The artist was perhaps Indian and the cover art was an abstract form. The music was New Age/Alternative ?

    Lee

Lee, that was A.R. Rahman: Vande Mataram

    1997, Columbia (Sony Music)

  7. What a good time! I'm busy at work right now, and got in tired late last night, but just let me say that the 'event' was much fun. There were lots of different equipment there and even more types of music there.

I definitely have to add my YES to the crossover crazies, the effect on my '76 Cornwalls was immediate and very satisfying. Prior to having the crossover installed, Dee's Heresys made 'em sound rather sickly. Afterwards, there was wonderful clarity in the sound from top to bottom. We all had a good time sniffing the old crossovers.

I got to hear my Scott 208 against SSH's Lessard S.E.T., Dee's MK III's, and Seti's Canary Audio S.E.T. with a Merlin and with a Scott 130, a Phillips Universal CD player vs. a Tjoeb tube unit, and a good vinyl rig (Music Man?). My Scott lost in every case, but I still love it none the less! [:o] More impressions on all of this later when I have time to write it up.

The room at 'The Goat Roper' was acoustically wonderful.. few parallel surfaces and mostly wood. We even kept it below 90 db (surprising loud, even there) most of the time until the very end, where the last 10 songs or so pushed the 105 - 110 level. Fun stuff.

Good food, good drink, good friends, good tunes, good sound... what more could one ask for?

  8. So, what's the dresscode? I'd assume hot 'n' humid will be the weather theme, or will it be cooling off? I mean, of course I will be wearing my barber's smock, shirt and tie, but that may be all. Also, what music will folks be bringing? I will bring some Solas, NRBQ, Acoustic Alchemy, Jennifer Warnes, etc....

As long as you bring your razor sets we'll be happy.

Music, hmmmm, I'm choosing music that I like, obviously, but everything that I bring is excellently recorded and presents superb imaging on my 299B/Khorn system.

    The Planets

    Peter Hurford: Organ Music

    Bela Fleck: Fun Stuff!

    Grisman/Rice: Tone Poems

    AR Rahmen: Vende Mataram

    Ricky Lee Jones: Pop! Pop!

Holly Cole: It Happened One Night

Paul Winter: Prayer for the Wild things

    Mary Chapin Carpenter: various stuff

    Keb Mo: various stuff

    Miles Davis: Kind of Blue

  9. I'm driving in from the DFW area Friday evening. I can bring speakers or electronics if needed, or I can just bring myself.

Some of the stuff I could throw in the back of my Explorer:

    Speakers:

    - Cornwall II's (1988 vintage). It might be interesting to compare to Cornwalls

    - Heresys (1978 vintage)

    Electronics:

    - Philips DVD 963SA (for DVD-A and SACD)

    - HK 505 integrated amp -60wpc twin powered amp (big brother to the much admired HK x30 receivers)

    - Scott 130 preamp (NOS Valves) - Could be fun comparing to the Merlin

    - Dynaco MKIII amps (GSI modded)

    - Scott 299D integrated amp (NOS Valves)

    OR:

    - I could just bring a couple of coolers loaded with ice and barley pops.

If I do not hear from anyone, I will assume the equipment list is covered and I'll just come with the coolers.

    David

    Hey David,

It'd be cool to hear the Cornwall II vs. Cornwall I. But personally, my choice would be to have you bring the Scott 130 pre-amp to listen to as well as your SACD player. I'm bringing a Scott 208 (basically the power amp section of the 299C), so there could be two preamp/amp combos set up.

I'm really looking forward to hearing different tube topologies compared side by side. Where I live I don't even have the advantage of a decent solid state setup to check out, much less tubes.
