  1. I've heard about these Azur's but please translate this for me:

"The Cambridge Audio 840C incorporates a raft of new technologies and features. Key to its abilities is the ATFTM (Adaptive Time Filtering) upsampling process - developed in conjunction with Anagram Technologies of Switzerland. This system intelligently interpolates 16 bit/44.1kHz CD (or other) data to 24bit/384kHz through the use of a 32 bit Analog Devices Black Fin
DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for the very best sound quality. The ATF system applies sophisticated polynomial curve fitting interpolation and incorporates a time domain model which allows data buffering and reclocking almost completely eradicating digital jitter. Because the audio data rate is so high aliasing artefacts are moved way above audible frequencies allowing us to use a low order 2 pole linearphase Bessel filter on the output for constant group delay and minimal phase shift."

Well that sounds fancy pants but what the hell does that mean. LOL I want the 840C for the ability to use its onboard DAC with an external media server. That and the 640C has been so good the 840C must be better. I mean that is 200 more than my current CDP. :)

I had a chance to hear the 840c with a Tempest II 90 watt tube int amp and La Scala IIs that sounded very, very good!

  2. I have 2004 La Scalas and I built 6 inch risers out of 2 x 4s and plywood. My living room is 15 x 15 x 8 and I sit about 10-12 feet back. It brought the mid horn up to my ear level and put the tweeter just above my ears so to me it is not as bright.

If I could sit about 15 feet back then I would probably do 2-3 inch risers.

  3. I read the story below and want to offer my thoughts and prayers to the families that lost people due to Hur Ike.

For those on the forum who live in a area that gets hit by hurricanes read the story below and the next time a Hurricane is predicted to hit where you live think really hard on the pros and cons of staying and braving the storm out instead of leaving.

A life cannot be rebuilt if you die, a house or a car can be replaced if destroyed.

  4. I've got one ; a PS3 and with my 720 DLP it doesn't look or sound much better if at all than my Sony NS999ES does on my old Samsung . Perhaps when I step up to 1080 I will notice a differance .

I think the advantage for BR or HD players is with a 1080P HD tv. If your tv will not go any higher than 720 then the PS3 is outputing 720p which is the same as your Sony NS999ES so there is not an improvement over the Sony.

You need a 1080p hd tv and there should be a obvious improvement in picture quality.

  5. I've got a PS3 and a Toshiba A35 HD dvd player and enjoy both.

The PS3 is the best bang for your money compared to a blue ray player. It can do games, BR dvds, regular dvds(though my Toshiba A35 HD dvd player has better picture for standard dvds) it can do photos, you can hook it up to the internet and use your tv as a monitor, it can do home videos, and mine has a 80G hard drive so you can save things to it.

As far as the quality of the blue ray pic most are good to outstanding. I have found it is better to rent them first and if it is one you really like and it has a very good picture then you can buy it. Just because a movie is out on blue ray does not mean it will have outstanding picture quality. Cast Away with Tom Hanks on BR looks like a regular dvd and not a very good one. I am sure there are other movies on BR that look like it is a regular dvd but I think those are the minority and probably older ones.

Your tv must have HDMI or your A/V reciever since the PS3 has HDMI out and optical out.

  6. Cal if getting to the end point is the focus, which for you it seems to be, then the airplane is the obvious choice.

A train trip from Onterio Ca to Aberdeen SD is a "ADVENTURE" and anyone taking such a train trip should understand that.

Back in the 70s my mom would take me and my 2 sisters on the Amtrak from San Antonio to OK City and it was some of the best times of my childhood. I still vividly remember watching out the window curious what the landscape would change into next. It was a way to see parts of America I never would have if not for the train. Some of the people we meet on the train we stayed in contact with and when they were in San Antonio we would show them around the city and they would do the same for us when we were in their city.

My mom did not have to drive 10 hours and the train was about the same time wise. The dining car was always alot of fun.

Like any vacation things may not always go as planned but that is life.[:D] If you do not have much time for a vacation then of course the plane is the choice. But if you have extra time then the train can be a great way to be part of the vacation.

When I was in Japan we left Kyoto on a train(not a bullet train) and took a 4 hour ride up into the Japanese mountains to a city called Takayama. It was a amazing way to see the Japanese countryside and how people outside the cities lived. Then about halfway we followed a river the rest of the way that was absolutely stunning. That train trip was one of the main things I will remember about Japan. I don't know if there was a airline that I could have flown from Kyoto to Takayama but I had a better time going by train.

Pic is of a small Japanese town with rice fields(I guess that is what they were) all around the town.

A long train trip is not only about where you are going or the destanation but how you get there and enjoying the trip to the destanation.

  7. The only problems I've ever heard could all be attributed to room issues. That may explain the "colorizations" you hear, too!

I guess that's the whole fun of this hobby. New discoveries etc. Some good, some bad. I guess my main point is that Klipsch speakes are colored sounding. Some may like it, some won't. But, they are colored and I'm not so sure I like that sound anymore..

It's pretty strange, but I'm angry about this realization. I'm not sure who or why or what to be angry at though. Maybe those d*mn AR4x's I should smash up. Big Smile

I think our taste can change as we age. No need to be angry just go with what sounds good to you.

  8. That is why I like horn speakers makes me feel like I am there. They can be a pain in the *** to get right but when I do it sounds outstanding!

    I disagree.

I have both AR3a and the Klipsch Heresy. I would argue that the AR3a is the "you are there" and the Heresy (horn sound) is "they are here".

Ctiger2 got it right. Very different. Better or worse? I still can't make up my mind. That's why I still live in both worlds!

Not sure what the difference is between the two, "you are there" and "they are here"? Sounds the same thing to me.

  9. Dave I am glad you and everyone else who stayed behind are alright!!

It is a big mess to clean up and FEMA just does not have the manpower to be everywhere the storm hit. Part of the problem is there are hundreds of thousands of people spread from south of Galveston over to Louisana not just on the coast but also inland where the storm also did a lot of damage.

The hard part for FEMA and state, even local authorities is trying to figure out where was hit hardest and trying to get help to those people first.

I understand some people cannot leave.

If anyone stays of their own free will then they have to understand that that if they need help after the storm they may not get it for awhile. That is a risk taken by anyone who stays behind.

I read about a man in Orange who stayed but could have left but stayed and had to be rescued. He was lucky that he got out.

A lot of people got lucky that Ike did not hit as hard as expected!

Katrina and Rita did hit with all their fury and people ignored the warnings and a lot of people died! Was the aftermath of Katrina mishandled yes but it was at the local, state, and Fedral level not just FEMA.

Glad you and anyone else from the forum in the affected areas are okay.

  10. I agree with you about "horn coloration" with horn speakers that is what I like about them. Every speaker has some kind of coloration to them. It just depends on what type of coloration one likes best.

I was going into Central Market and they had a Jazz band on the patio with a Trumpet player doing a solo and I had to stop and go listen cause it sounded so good!! I walked over and was about 20 feet back and the trumpet player was using a pair of Heresy size speakers with a 12 inch woofer and a single midrange horn. It sounded outstanding!!

That is why I like horn speakers makes me feel like I am there. They can be a pain in the *** to get right but when I do it sounds outstanding!
