  1. When ever I make a cd on my computer the sound quality is not the same as the original cd. I have the latest version of Window XP media to burn cds with and have set it up as best as I can with my meger computer skills. Is it possible to record from the computer onto a CDRW disc and get the same quality sound? If I have to go buy software that costs over $100 then it's not worth it.

My set up is a Luxman preamp, Cayin TA 30 tube amp, NAD C542 cd player, and 2004 La Scalas so if the cd recording is not the same quality as the original cd it sounds bad to me.

So I don't make them. I have a Nakamichi RX 202 cassette deck that I'm going to use for a comparision. If they still sell cassettes I'm going to record a tape and a cd with the same material and do a comparsion.

Now anyone who can help me make sure my computer windows media player is set up for the best way I would appreciate it so the test will be as objective as possible. I have not used the RX202 in a long time so if I cannot find a cleaning cassette what other ways are there to clean the recording and playback heads on the Nakamichi RX202 cassette deck?

  2. I'm not sure I understand your question but I'll try and answer. If I select 5 channel mode on my receiver and switch from dvd player to cd player to radio to any other player the receiver will still be in 5 channel mode so the tone controls stay the same. IF I switched over to stereo mode and did the same switching cd player to dvd player etc the tone controls would stay the same because it would still be in stereo mode.

So only when I switch from different the different modes does the tone control setting change. Only the direct mode this would not apply since direct mode does not have tone controls.

  3. do a search on the internet and you might find some sample music you could download. Some music online stores has a brief sample of some of the songs on each album. A to me NO not like Kenny G, every album he puts out is his first album with the songs in different order and all his songs sound the same IMHO.

  4. I have both a NAD C542 cd player and a Denon 2900 DVD player. On CDs to me the C542 sounds better for cds in my system (Luxman preamp, Cayin tube amp, 2004 La Scalas). But put in a good SACD or DVD audio and the 2900 sounds better. The 2900 sounds to layed back and looses some details that I hear with the C542. Also depends on the recording of the CD. Some cds are to bright on the C542 but bearable on the 2900.

The latest models of good DVD players should be very close in sound to a good cd player. I would like to compare the Denon 2910 or 3910 to my C542 but I'm working on other areas of my system.

I have a NAD C540 that I bought in 2000 that I was going to sell on audiogon for $100. If you want a very good used cd player this is a great choice. You can go to audioreview.com and look it up for reviews. It does not have a lot of features instead they focused on sound quality.

Send me a email if you are interested.

  5. Does the yamaha manual say anything on how to do this?

I have a Denon A/V receiver and when I switch from movies to stereo whatever tone settings I set for movies stays only with movies. And whatever tone setting for stereo stays only with stereo playback. If I switch over to 5 channel music what ever tone setting I adjust in 5 channel will only affect 5 channel and no other. So you should be able to set the tone control levels for each individual one. If the manual does not say anything then check with the dealer you bought it from and then from the Yamaha website. If your receiver can not do this might be a good reason to upgrade.

  6. Been wanting to try this myself. I use a Luxman int amp as a preamp with a Cayin TA 30 tube amp. My La Scalas are 2004 with both HF and LF wire connections. Is it possible to use the tube amp for the HF and use the Luxman's amp section, remember it's a int amp, for the bass or would I have to have a separte amp for the bass? Also how would I run 2 preouts to the amps from my Luxman preamp if it only has one preout? I also have a 85 Luxman preamp with 2 preouts on it but my 2004 Luxman int amp sounds better.

I have 2 Monarchy Audio SM 70 Pros 80 watt monoblocks that I'm going to sell but I can try this before I sell them.

I saw you have a Marantz CDR-630 Pro CD Recorder how do you like it? When I make cds on my computer they do not sound very good on my 2 channel system. Have you done a A/B comparision between the original cd and the copy? How much is the Marantz?

  7. Here is the post send a email someone already contacted him. "I have a set of KLF 20 black veneer speakers for sale. They are in excellent working condition. There are some minor surface abrasions on the top of one of the speakers. $500.00. Please email cre8tadream@yahoo.com or leave a message here if interested."

  8. Cre8tadream has a post for some KLF 20s for sell at a really good price. He is in NY somewhere. Send him a email. Not sure how far of a drive it is to NY from Virgina but for a good deal like this if they are in good shape I would do a road trip. I have KLF 20s and 2004 La Scalas and in my living room, small 15 x 15 x 8, at loud listening levels I like the KLF 20s better than the La Scals.

  9. If I was there I would go but not sure if you like a trumpet player who plays more of a modern smooth jazz. I have 2 of his cds and 1 SACD. The SACD "Night Sessions" sounds very very good not sure how it would sound on regular cd but if you buy one try this one if you like modern smooth jazz. The 2 cds "a thousand kisses deep" and "When I Fall In Love" are booth good but do not sound as well recorded as the SACD. The CDs have a mix of modern and some older trumpet songs.

How much are the tickets? If you have a player that will play SACDs then get "Night Sessions" if not get it on CD. If you like it go see him. Also depends on what album is most recent cause he will play most of that album and some of his other stuff in concert.

  10. I live in Austin and back in Nov of 2003 called the local Klipsch dealer and asked to order a pair of new La Scalas. They informed me that Klpsch had stopped making them. So I started calling Klipsch dealer around Texas to ask them about used La Scalas and got to College Station Audio/Video(I think that is the name of the store) and was told about the upgraded Heritage. So I had to drive almost 2 hours to place my order and pick them up. Payed $3500 for the grilled La Scalas.

  11. What Luxman gear did ya get? I have a new Luxman int amp I switch from using just as a preamp with my Cayin tube amp and using it as just a int amp and both sound very good! When using the Luxman as a int amp musical instraments sound better than when using the Cayin tube amp. But vocals are better with the Cayin. I would love to try some VRDs with the Luxman.

  12. Bad recordings can sound very bad with Klipsch. But very good recordings sound fantastic!

What are some of the best sounding CDs or Records you have or have heard on a Klipsch system, not SACD or DVD audio?

If you like music from all over the world and don't care about having to understand the words but just enjoying the music and voices then try a music label called Putumayo.

    http://www.putumayo.com/

They are some of the best recordings on CD I have heard and you get a small idea of what people around the world might listen to. Barnes and noble carries a good selection of Putumayo and you can listen to the CDs before you buy them.

  13. Glad to hear your finally starting to get the sound you wanted out of the La Scalas. I know how frustrating it can be to get these speakers sound good in a small room. My living room is a little bigger than yours at 15 x 15 x 8. I have a big mirror on the wall behind my couch so might have to hang a couple of rugs up and see if it helps any.

  14. I have a pair of 2004 La Scalas and a single 1976 center channel La Scala. When I got the 1976 LS it was very obvious the 2004 sounded much better. I had BEC build me a new AA crossover and the sound has gotten better but the 2004s still sound much better.

I thought it might have been the Denon receiver I use for the center channel but hooked it up to my Luxman preamp/Cayin tube amp on the left channel and 2004 LS on the right. The 2004 was much better sounding. The 76 LS sounds great in Home Theater, voices, explosions sound great. But with SACD or DVD audio it sounds ok as the center speaker but not like the 04s. Like Dean said with more money the crossover could sound better but how much more?

In the future may get half the upgrade kit from Klipsch.

I'm going to buy 2 Merlins and use one for center channel duties only. I'll have to use 2 volume controls but with a new crossover and drivers for the center LS it should sound great.
