  1. Thanks! Maybe Sunday I can give a call to do the testing and the tightening; will you be around? I bought the type III Kt90 as this was suppose to be the most stable and they are from Upscale Audio. They claim this is a good batch, fully tested, and guarenteed. But we will see about that.... I'll call Sunfire now. DC
  2. I have some EI type III Kt-90s on the way for the mini-mites....can't wait to be done with school, my audio room is TORN up.......! May have to pull the trigger on some used CCA for the line stage of the Sunfire....should be more than enough for it... DC
  3. I can get my hands on some used for 75$ a piece: NOS Siemens Cca 1970s This is the highest rated 6922 type on the news groups. Outstanding performance, long life. Highly recommended! Limited Quantity Gold Pins NOS/NIB Not NIB but tested strong and for low noise. ...... DC
  4. From Audio Asylum: "there is a small chance that the 6DJ8 will get toasted. Rule of thumb: A 6922 will always replace a 6DJ8 but a 6DJ8 will not always replace a 6922. I'd say give the 6DJ8 a try. About the worst that might happen is that the 6DJ8 might not last too long." I am trying to find some real quiet good solid well balanced tubes for a Sunfire Vacuum Tube Pre. Time to upgrade from the Phillips JAN 6922. I am pretty sure the manual says use 6922. Anyone using the new EI 6DJ8? Anyone got any quiet NOS 6922 they want to sell or trade? I have some EH KT-88s with maybe 1000 hours on them at most I coould trade. And I do have some Telefunken diamond bottom ax7's (2). I REALLY need a tube tester btw! JC
  5. 1. The oxidization, tarnish, on silver is conductive unlike the copper when it oxidizes. 2. Try DIY. Why not buy some Teflon'd solid silver 18awg or 22awg from Homegrown Audio or http://www.hooverandstrong.com/mill/roundwire_specs.htm The latter you need to get some Teflon tubing from Mcmaster Carr and do it yourself; the homegorwn stuff is already sheathed in Teflon. Just do 3-4 turns per foot, no shield (you can add one later if you need it). The above linked Roger Russell page states 6ft max 20awg I think? Cheap way to check out silver. I have a hybrid 22awg copper solid core/22awg silver solid core speaker cable here ready to test at the end of the week. Zaolla cables are cheap, very well built, 99.999 solid core silver; can be had REAL cheap from Midi Classics in CT: http://www.midi-classics.com/c/cZ9886.htm if you buy maybe 200$ worth. that guy gives some serious bulk ($$$) deals. It's not ubercable, not Cardas HyperThong, etc. but decent stuff; triple shield, flexible, good terminations, sounds good. Most of their PR is hillarious, way overboard, but doesn't change the fact that it's well-built. http://www.zaolla.com/zaolla_product_audio_interconnects1.html How long of a length do you need for speaker cables. I may have a set of Belden CC89259 (cross connected Jon Risch design) I could load you; 3ft enough? v/r DC p.s. I like the no wire idea...rad hey
  6. DEAN - What IS the scoop on silver w/ horns...? You never posted anything regarding this just an ominous ultimatum : ) Some solid core silver in Teflon 18AWG can be had for under 30$ for about 6-7 feet. For such a short run it would be a cheap experiment. A lot of the Triode clan swear by a simple 18-20 awg wire which seems to be well with the limits of lenght for a short run (18awg up to 6ft.?) The wire you linked to would also be a n economic experiment. So what will happen to my horns? I can only assume you were "tongue in cheek". [:|] DC
  7. I have a Brickwall. Could I run a Panamax 5510 after the Brickwall? DC
  8. Looking at the Panamax 5510, strange thing is there are NO specs anywhere for the PF60; even in the manual, nothing. Doesn't sit easy with me, that and the fact that the MSRP was 700$+ and they now can be had for 150$.....? DC
  9. I was reading some posts in which you described the effects of biwiring may not be exactly beneficial for tube amps. Do you still feel this is the case for i.e. reactive speaker load. I am using some Quicksilver Mini-Mites right now with bi-wired Risch design CC89259 on the 4ohm tap. I am going to be shortening these cables when I move the monoblocks to the floor, and I was interested in your comments regarding soldering connections or at least replacing speaker terminals. I use bare wire on the amp connections as a result of shortening them and same on one set of speaker terminals; I find I can get the connections really tight and secure. Anyone replaced the posts on the RF7s? JC P.S. Dean - you still doing the crossover mod for people? I still have your email with all the info, just trying to figure out when to do it.
  10. My gut tells me it is a tube issue but I will report back what Craig and I find. Glad the TT mount worked out; that was/is a geat unit. It may be a few weeks before I can call with finals week and papers due very soon. all the best, Jon
  11. Thanks mate. I guess I meant blurring as in, I am experience some distortion of the sound. I will have to do some critical listening soon and see what I hear; changes tubes around and repeat. thanks Jon
  12. Hey all, Reading from some posts on here I gathered some thoughts for this question: How would I know if my tweeters are damaged? If it is not obvious musically will I hear some other kind of artifact? Should I test with a test tone or test LP? I purchased my cherry RF-7s when someone (thank you!0 in this forum notified me that some were for sale locally in St. Petersburgh, Florida. The gentleman was in need of cash and I have no doubt they were his speakers but he did say at one time he had cranked his Yamaha SS reciever all the way and they partied on Halloween down the street while the 7s blasted. I heard mention of SS eqipment possibly damaging tweeters at high levels of playback. I have mini-mites with EH KT-88s (had to return a pair in the past for static) and sometimes here minor crackling out of one speaker, but I can't be sure yet if its the tubes because Ihaven't yet switched the tubes around in the monoblocks. The music sounds great but the more I think abou a few times I have cocked my head wondering if I am hearing some kind of static or blurring in the treble.... just wondering how I go about giving the RF7s a run through to check for problems. thanks! Jon aka DR. CILANTRO Craig - You better still be making VRDs in a few years man. Hope your well and my condolences for your loss.
  13. I'm wondering if the perceived combination of positive effects could be due, in part, to the decoupling of the speaker from the floor. Whenever I used to make my kick drum nice and high on its legs, away from the floor, it would resonate much more and sound more "efficient" and tonally pure, as opposed to the deading effect when coupled to the floor. Of course, then you may add a touch of packing just like with a speaker to give it a little sumpthin. I may check this out with my RF-7s this winter by simply removing the rear spikes and leaving the front ones on. DC Craig - those VRDs are looking spicy....that cherry finish.....
  14. Any recommendations for monoblocks similar to the Quicksilver Mid-Mono (60watts with KT90s)...... JC
  15. http://www.quicksilveraudio.com/products/midmono.html Also considering the Mid-Monos with KT-90s .... DC
  16. We just had a baby, and as much as I like my measly 25 watts/channel Quicksilver monos.....they spit out a lot of heat with KT-88s, the transformers cause distortion to be picked up by my Grado Sonata, and I can forsee my son getting the EH logo burned into his skin someday. I have a Sunfire Classic Pre and was looking at the 300 2-channel amp that is no longer in production. 600 watts rms per channel at 4ohms, and for those who like to bi-wire it has seperate terminals for high/low. So no worries with the 7s and this much juice at 4ohms...... wondering what I am missing with 25watts.... v/r DC
  17. Very cool, but 2K$ cool, I'm not sure. The Squeezebox is nice, but when it comes to accessing your music I find using a laptop or maybe a PDA makes this streaming experience more complete. I am building a living room system with an airport express & 2.1 Promedia. This system will be controlled by my wife's laptop using J. River Media Center 12. Squeezbox works with the UPnP of MC12 but I find that since she already has a laptop we can use it for a living system and then her lappy gets better sound (when she is in the living room of course). MC12 has Squeezebox support so you can use MCs "zones" function and output to your squeezbox. Each zone is a soundcard or audio device and your can output unique audio streams to each zone with MC. "MC2Slim is a small program that runs alongside Media Center and allows you to treat your Squeezeboxes as MC Zones and play your music as if they were a soundcard on your PC. The program needs to be installed and run on the same PC that you use for MC but can connect to a remote Slimserver. More info and the download can be found at http://www.duff-zapp.co.uk" I want to buy a squeezebox but it costs 2x's as much as an airport express & it does not act as a wireless extender which I can use once I install the carputer : ) And I just feel limited with the idea of using the interfaces provided by most of the devices e.g. SlimDevice, Roku, Linksys when I can use a laptop to view my smartlists, playlist, genres etc. as cover art in real time. From this perspective it seems much more reasonable (and functional) to go with a WiFi solution that is controlled by a PC, tablet, laptop, or palm device. When you have 2TB of audio accessing a particualr song with a remote is going to be interesting a la Ipod scroll wheel to find a song name. DC
