  1. I was looking on-line at the Harman Kardon DVD 47. My TV has an HDMI input, but my receiver does not. Can I connect the HDMI to the TV for Video and the coaxial out to the receiver for audio? This seems like it would work, but since the HDMI carries audio and video I'm not sure, because I don't want the audio going to my TV.
  2. Thanks for the replies. So how in the world do I know how many watts my receiver is putting out? I think my manual informs me not to go above 0 on the volume dial. I'm assuming that is problably like the SPL that would get close to the calculator link?
  3. On Wikipedia, there's an article with an example using sensitivity/efficiency of speakers with 92db/watt (actually 2.83V) @ 1meter vs. 89.... It repeatedly states that this 3 db difference is double the sound pressure. I assume the article is correct but it sure isn't what one would think. It stated that the 1st speaker was a 100 watt speaker and the 2nd was a 200 watt speaker and that if both we powered a 100 watts the 92db speaker would be twice as loud, and that the Nevermind here's the paragraph: t should be noted that a higher power rated driver will not necessarily be louder than a lower rated one. In the examples which follow, it is implicit that the drivers being compared have the same impedance. For the first example, a speaker 3 dB more sensitive than another will produce double the sound pressure level (or be 3 dB louder) for the same power. Thus a 100 W speaker ("A") rated at 92 dB for 1 W @ 1 m sensitivity will be twice as loud as a 200 W speaker ("B") rated at 89 dB for 1 W @ 1 m when both are driven with 100 W of input power. For this particular example, when driven at 100 W, speaker A will produce the same SPL, or loudness, speaker B would produce with 200 W input. Thus a 3 dB increase in sensitivity of the speaker means that it will need half the amplifier power to achieve a given SPL, and this translates into a smaller, less complex, power amplifier and, often, to some cost savings. The biggest thing I'm confused about is that my receiver is 100 Watts/channel (115 in two channel). If I was using 100 Watt it seems like with my RF-35s rated at 98dbs that the spl would be 9800dbs. I know this is incorrect. In the example above 100watts seems like it'd equal 9200db vs. 8900 which is definitely not just half. When my receiver is on, is it always at 100 watts like a 100 watt lightbulb is and then maybe at 0db on the volume control one could make a pretty good guess of what the spl should be? A little insight would be much appreciated.

Not at all, the reciever still provides the pre-driver and the power output circuts aside from tone controls and any surround modes you select. The HT reciever is a busy place." I left out that I will have the receiver set to "surround off" when playing CD's with my speakers set to large using the composite plugs. My AVR manual states, "when an analog signal source is present it will be routed directly from the input to the volume control without being digitalized or processed." If I use the digital path, I now realize I will avoid the line stage driver circuit in the CD player this way, will the receiver pass the signal through a line stage circuit of it's own or does the receiver avoid that circuit entirely and go straight to its pre-driver? Also, I am gathering that without the volume increase when using the digital out of my player that it is probably using better quality parts?
  5. Thanks for replying, It's been a while since I tried listening to the difference in the coaxial and the optical. But if I remember correctly I couldn't tell a difference so I went with the coaxial which is what the majority of what I've read lean towards. Anyway, regarding the stage driver circuit in my DVD/CD after the DAC: Does the AVR not have operational amplifiers or transistors after its DAC? Also, I'm confused about line-level. Does a signal not make it to line-level until after the DAC and some sort of pre-amp in my DVD player? And then when does it get strong enough to produce audible sound out of my speakers? At the speaker or in the receiver (I thought the receiver didn't do anything when I used the composite plugs and had speakers set to large)?
  6. I have an HK AVR 7200 and and HK DVD 22. When I set my speakers to large and use surround off, I am supposed to not have any processing by my AVR. So I'm trying to hear the difference in using the composite outs on my DVD 22 vs. the coaxial out. Correct me if I'm wrong, but using the coaxial output bypasses my DVD/CD players DACs and uses my receiver's. When I listen with the composites the sound is louder; when I use the coaxial it isn't as loud. I can't personally hear any difference in clarity or anything else; just volume. I'm assuming that this is an indication that the DVD 22's DACs are better. Does anyone have any input? Please don't inform me to listen for myself as I already have.
  7. I have my rig in a fairly small (not tiny) bedroom. Is there a recommended phase and frequency setting? I have almost no experience with subs. I have this one inbetween the right front and the TV about 7 inches from the wall. P.S. I'm about to watch Master & Commander. Hope it's good.

  10. What's the difference in DD 5.1 and DTS? In layman's terms. Just a breif little description please, unless one wants to elaborate.
  11. It seem like I was listening to a CD in analog (no surround) and my center channel was active (my surrounds weren't). But later I thought I had things set the same way and no center channel. It may be my imagination, but was my center channel active when I was in the surround off mode listening to a CD?
  12. Realize I'm no audiophile and have very little experience with this stuff. I bought the 7200 a few days ago from onecall. As far as movies go, I don't see how they could sound any better. I think music sounds outstanding too. But I'm not 99% sure that something else could maybe do better for music. I love mine and am glad I bought it. I haven't messed with the MP3 side of it yet, which I should get around to today.
  13. Some DVD's have DD on back and 5.1, others only have DD. Do these that only have DD on them do the effects of the 5.1?
  14. When doing the EZset, it is recommended to start with the volume at -15. Do they think that is the normal listening volume. It is way too loud for me. I was wondering if I should try the EZset with the initial volume a little lower. Should I? And what is referenc level?
  15. I know (think I know) that I only need to make a connection from the Sub out on my AVR to the LFE on my sub for movies. But what about listening to analog music. From what I can tell it works fine with just that connection, but in reading the Klipsch manual I'm not sure if I'm not supposed to connect some speaker wire from the sub to the AVR's Front L & R speaker outputs. Advice appreciated.
