    WHY?

It may be a grounding issue. Try the cheater plug, plugging everything into the same socket, etc. It may show up more on the Heresy because it is more efficient. Jeff

    DVI vs RGB

FWIW,I just picked up my HD cable box today and it has both component and DVI outputs. The Component output is subtly more detailed and better looking. The DVI is softer and looks a little washed out. I thought that the DVI thing started with the review of the Bravo DVD player. That had DVI, which worked with most TVs, and a flawed compnent output. It also scaled DVDs to 720p on DVI. The question is: why wouldn't the component output, if it worked properly, scale to 720p also? Jeff
  3. Damon, It wouldn't be any fun....but just remember that all of these speaker companies don't employ engineers just because they want to keep white collar workers employed. There's quite a bit to the whole speaker thing. I'd like to make a Heritage home theater as well. The lack of a matching center is troubling though. If I try building my own, I will use the bass drivers from the Academy (assuming I can get them from Klipsch). This reduces the work for me because they will work in a sealed enclosure, I know the dimensions of the box and they should meet the efficiency criteria without presenting an unduly tough load on the amp. Then, it's mostly just a matter of trying to match the woofers output to the mid/tweet, because I would prefer to use the same mid/tweeter across the front 3 speakers. On timbre matching, right now I have Infinity IL40s and an IL36C for my front speakers. They use the same mid/tweeter combo. The 36 is sealed and uses 2 6.5" woofers. The 40s are ported and use a single 8". I am sometimes disturbed by the audible change in the tone of voices as they pan from the center to the mains and vice-versa. These drivers are made of the same material! It is very difficult to achieve a seamless blend! That single Heresy is probably looking pretty good right now.... Jeff
  4. Check this out.... http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrfull&1086740705 Someone is selling an Klipsch 8" driver from a KG3.2. Jeff

Kevlar drivers generally have some degree of nastiness associated with their resonant frequency and it is probably beyond the scope of your capabilities to adequately modify the crossover to deal with the issue. Also, these woofers are considerably less efficient than the drivers they are replacing. At 88db each, that gives about 91 db for the system. I'd look at these: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=297-310 Should give you a better match in terms of output (94 db) and they have a nicer roll-off. Probably a better timbre match as well. Of course, both of these woofers are recommended for ported enclosures.... Good Luck, Jeff

I had the DQ12s for a while, before the inevitable upgrade. I've toyed with the idea of making a separate bass cabinet for my Heresy IIs and mounting the horns on a slab of wood a la Dahlquist & Alon. I'm surprised no one else has tried that round here. Jeff

But thanks for the info. Since I move every couple of years, it may come in handy some time. BTW, I'm at the AF Academy. Jeff
  8. It largely depends on how loud you will listen. If you look around at the vast majority of $1K (or less) subs, they will not go much above 90 db at 20 hz. They typically start rolling off at 30-35 hz and reach their limit below that. Look at their reviews (which include measurements) for the no-BS answer on what they can do. The Hsu VTF-3 is probably the cheapest, powered sub I've seen which can really hit 20 hz. vr, Jeff
  9. Hi, The comments above will help you, but experimentation is still required. My Heresy IIs have the slant risers as well. When I was stationed in Germany, they had very little bass while sitting on a ceramic tile floor and nestled in the corners of the room. In my current digs, courtesy of Uncle Sam, they are somewhat congested in the bass/midbass when sitting on the wooden floor and several feet out from the corners. Try using them on the floor (with the risers) and on concrete blocks (to simulate stands). If you prefer the concrete blocks, then you should hunt down some decent stands. Enjoy, Jeff
  10. Hi, Some thing to be wary of..... Some Forte (models 4-7) and Threshold (T-series) amps cannot be repaired (if the output stage dies) since the output devices (Toshiba IGBTs) cannot be had any more. I confirmed this with the folks at the Threshold Service company. The older Threshold stuff (S-series) and the Forte (1,3) can be fixed. Go figure! Both sound great! Jeff
  11. Hi, This is what the folks at Klipsch sent me a while ago. Enjoy, Jeff
