  1. Talked with some people, my SPU is not adequate for playing 78 rpm'ers, still researching, but I've talked at least to a couple of TT guru's. One from needledoctor.

Thanks for the input Dave, but I now feel like a bloodhound on a hot trail.

STOP PLAYING YOUR 78s with your SPU!! You are RUINING them--you may have ALREADY ruined them even with only one or two plays! The itty pitty LP stylus is slamming back and forth in the grooves and is destroying the VERY BRITTLE shellac discs!

BUT! You can buy a BRAND NEW SPU that has a .65mm conical stylus that you can play them with. Around $375 from Mr. Juki. I just sold a nice ORIGINAL mono 78 SPU on ebay for $250 that needed to be rebuilt. I have one that HAS been rebuilt and I pull it out from time to time and have a 1 or 2 day "78 party."

  2. I made my own risers. And I use spikes too. I made these about 10 years ago.

I used 1 1/2" walnut stock and made risers to the same outside dimension of the original Klispch risers. I then screwed 1/16" sheet metal to one side and FILLED the void with play sand. I then screwed another sheet of steel on the other side of the riser. I then set these HEAVY risers on metal spikes and cones (hardwood floors) and put the Cornwalls on the risers.

This did more to tighten up the bottom end than any other "tweak" you can name.

  3. They were ALWAYS sold this way--without a base or a tonearm. You could get your dealer to fix you up with whatever arm you wanted. A lot of there were built into custom consoles, so the "factory" optional bases are really few and far between.

$4600? NUTS! "NOS" doesn't really matter with these tanks--as good, clean originals can be brought up to "NOS" operating specs easily enough.

I'll bet this stays in the box as a "collectible investment."

  4. Gary--

Mine is the true mono cartridge--the cantilever moves in one plane only and it will DESTROY a stereo record if you try to play one with it! Yours is a stereo cartridge wired in mono and can be used to play stereo records in mono. I would have gone with the one you have if I had but one tonearm!

  5. you can read my profile

Ok, then. This IS a dance club system.

Someone, in the shallow end of the gene pool, missed:

    When at home..............

    Dahlquist DQ-10's

    Dynakit MKIII's

    Haffler DH-101

    Nakamichi 1000

Thorens 166 MkII w/ Grado Prestige Silver

    Velodyne sub

I was referring ONLY to your system with the 1200! But I guess you're too myopic and self-centered to understand that.

What are you hoping to gain by participating here? Just wondering . . .

  6. you can read my profile

Ok, then. This IS a dance club system. In that case, you've got some pretty much perfect dead-on kicka$$ stuff!! I wouldn't use anything BUT a Technics in a system like yours. A TD-124 would be a ROYAL pain in the butt in this application. The comparison of the Toyota and the Ferrari doesn't really fit. This is more like a guy with a delivery route complaining that he can't fit 3 tons of merchandise in a sedan. Or the guy with the 5-ton bobtail complaining that won't fit in his one-car garage . . .

  7. A Technics 1200 turntable is "better" than a TD-124 much in the same way a new Toyota Camry is "better" than a 1962 Ferrari GT250 California Spyder.

We own a dozen or so Technics tables. We rent them out as DJ equipment. I can't imagine using one for playing old Blue Note monos.

  8. John Heard's return to Charlie O's was really something. The place was PACKED--standing room only at the bar--easily the biggest crowd I've seen in the place in a long, long time. The band was smokin'! From the first few notes of "Red Top" to the end some 3 hours later the band never let up--Nate Morgan was in top form, Lorca Hart was on fire, Justo was fabulous on tenor and flute and John Heard was STRONG and HAPPY playing his heart out--he was truly INSPIRED and I've never heard him play better.

    WHAT A NIGHT!

  9. OK. Just got back from the gig. George Cables looked a bit thin, but strong and PLAYED HIS BUTT OFF!! MAN OH MAN!! Hard to believe he had a kidney AND a liver transplant only 5 months ago. Fluid, funky, swinging--chops TOTALLY there. It was so great to hear him again! James Spaulding was really terrific too--I've been a fan for 30 years and this was only the third time I have been able to hear him perform. He blew the roof off on alto during an upbeat "Now's the Time" which opened the set and played a BEAUTIFUL and stirring flute solo on "Blue Spirits." Slide Hampton was equally fine and Roy McCurdy was Roy McCurdy--solid as can be--not a finer straight ahead jazz drummer working today in my opinion.

Freddie was in good spirits but his lip is gone. It was a struggle for him all evening--he was better than I feared he would be after the report from San Francisco, but still it was sad. He should have just CONDUCTED and told stories and left the horn in the dressing room. All I could think about was hearing him with Joe Henderson and Bobby Hutcherson at the old Keystone Korner in San Francisco back in the early 80's when he could do ANYTHING with a trumpet--I don't know how ANYONE could be more techincally brilliant that Freddie was in those years.

Still, its worth $25 to hear this band even if Freddie can't really play a lick any more.

  10. He's made a few gigs over the past few weeks, so I remain hopeful. It will be great to hear "Mr. Beautiful" again!

A pal of mine who lives in San Francisco heard this group at the new Yoshi's in SF a couple of days ago and said Cables played great and looked good too. He also said Freddie was almost a total disaster--couldn't play a lick, but the rest of the band was smokin' and it was ALMOST worth it! He said is was really a sad sight to see Freddie struggle to play a 2 chorus solo and then hang his head and let the other musicians blow the roof off.

  11. this has me vexed

So the 103, being moving coil, would require the use of the Sansui or other special phono pre-amp. For some reason I think I might perfer to stay with moving magnet which could be retrofitted to other tonearm or used with other electronics more easily. But I'll do some more research.

Some of you fellas don't think the Grado would be a wise choice, or is it that there are 'better'? I probably need to stay below $200.

    Dave, email sent.

    GRADO + THORENS = HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

It's a nightmare combonation in my experience. Never liked Grado cartridges--even the expensive ones. Of course others have different opinions, I'm sure.

  12. I was afraid someone would say that Allan. Do you think the Sansui will be any good? It's 1970's vintage with MC and MM inputs and three way imp. switch for each. That's what I'm thinking of using for now with the Thorens/Grado in the Klipschorn room.

Please tell me that'll be 'good enough for now'.... I need to get something going soon....

Sansui gear from the early to mid 70's was VERY good. If everything is up to snuff you'll be OK. Get a moving coil cartridge-- 99 out of 100 times even a "budget" MC is better than a MM at the same price. At least that's how I have ALWAYS felt . . .

  13. So even a good TT with new cart hooked up to a proper receiver input won't be as loud as a CD? What a rip off! LOL What's the point of purchasing receivers that have phono inputs if they're 10db down from the rest of the system?

Is there any way other than to buy a separate pre-amp to get more volume? My Sansui AU9900A integrated amp has three position impedance switch, but that's not really input sensitivity per se, is it?

Well, if you're counting on the phono section of a "receiver" to drive your "good TT with new cart" you're never going to get there.

By the way, my SPU mono with Jorgen Schou step up tranformers going through the phono section of the McIntosh C22 is about 10 db UP from the CD output through the line stage.

  14. Corvette6769,

Why do you own so many speakers?

Collector. Why do I have 3000 jazz LPs? I like buying them, I really like owning them and I really, REALLY like listening to about 30-40% of them!!!

I know I guy who collects NOS Stewart Warner automotive gauges, intake manifolds and mag wheels. He must have about 50 Halibrand wheels in his garage and over 100 intake manifolds and at least 150 gauges new in their boxes. He's been doing this since the 70's but ever since EBAY came about it's kinda gone out of control. He's a collector.

  15. A couple of really neat things are happening next week here in L.A.

First, Freddie Hubbard will be at Catalina for three nights in celebration of his 70th with truly an ALL STAR band! Check out THIS lineup!! WOW!!!

Freddie has had all sorts of problems with his lip over the past decade, but reports are that when he played in New York a few weeks ago he sounded STRONG. In any case, it doesn't really matter if he's only a shadow of his former greatness (maybe the most "technically" gifted trumpet player ever--and that's saying something!!).
Second, and even BETTER news for me--JOHN HEARD RETURNS TO CHARLIE O'S!! on Friday, April 11!!!! John has had some health problems and has been off the scene for about 4-5 months, but he BACK next Friday!!! John is my favorite bass player--there's more SOUL in John playing three notes than most players show in an entire evening.
    Friday night's lineup:
    Justo Almario, tenor
    Nate Morgan, piano
    Lorca Hart, durms
and the GREAT JOHN HEARD on bass!!

Here's the entire April schedule for Charlie O's:
    and John's website:
  16. One Eyed Jacks. Slim Pickens to Karl Malden:

"I sure do hate to be the one to tell you this, Dad, but your daughter Luisa's been out on the beach all night with that Rio feller. Came home lookin' kinda messy too."

  17. That's the first pressing. 7029 is the correct number, but somehow the first batch of cover slicks had the wrong number and there was NO WAY Bob was going to reprint them if it meant spending more money--Prestige was really a one-man show!

These are FAIRLY rare and command about $100-$150 premium in true NM pristine condition over a later NYC pressing with the corrected front slick (figure $350 or so for the "wrong" number, $200-$250 for the later one) . The backs are the same. In VG shape or worse, the difference in value isn't all that great, as the NUTJOB Prestige collectors are the only guys who really care about this stuff.

By the way, I have this issue too in VG condition--when I bought it years ago I had no clue as to the misprint. But when I play this LP, I spin a NJ pressing that's just about stone mint since it sounds so much better.

I went through a massive Sonny Rollins kick right before Xmas--must have played 40 LPs in 5 days.

  18. He was a VERY good actor. From the teen fluff stuff early through Brokeback Mountain and to the yet released Batman film (the buzz in this town is that he's INSANELY good as the Joker) he has always impressed me. He would have had a long career in Hollywood, I think.

And I don't think this was an overdose of recreational drugs--eveything I'm hearing is that he killed himself by eating a whole bottle of OVER THE COUNTER sleep-aid pills.
