  1. I am in toen Monday and Tuesday nights next week for a trade show at McCormick Place.

    Any Blues club recomendations?

    Hey,

I lived in Chicago for a few years and was into the blues scene, try around Markette college.Cant remember the streets but look for a place called Kingston Mines. There is a strip by the college with about 4 or 5(used to be)blues clubs one owned by Muudy Waters(I think)been awhile, were talking 1986.But I know they are still there!

  2. I met a fellow who buys used Harley and British make motorcycles across <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />America and ships them by the container load to China. There is plenty of recently rich over there and they like their toys as much as we do.

Except everything they sell over there is made in ... well ... China. Enough said ...

That's why they like stuff they can't normally get.

As someone else said ... DHL ... all the way.

I buy stuff straight out of Japan and DHL service is amazing. 3 days from Tokyo to me in Canada. I can't get delivery out of Toronto or New York that quick.

You are correct,China has had a booming economy since coming out of thier reccession in 2000'.

The potential buyer is a project manager for a major architecture firm and has spent money on audiogon with good feedback. He knows due to his geographical location its not cheap to ship and like you said the selection of Klipsch LaScala's has to be few and far between in China.

  3. I have some expierence with the TAD 2001...you are really pushing it at xover of 500hz. the 4001 is safer. remember the Beryllium diaphram is very poisonus if blown. (by by daddy) The 4001 will make 500hz with out stress over time. And speaking of stress the 2001 is not that clean at 500hz xover point. Take my advice , play it safe. If you get that stuff in your lungs....Although the diaphram hase a gauss like coating on one side.. some could breake loose and get in the air. If you have family, and some child decides to crank it up .....well you know they dont thank like adults....Be is dangerous. JBL is now making Be diaphrams and coating with aquaplas. The Chinese also will be coming out with Be diaphrams A Be & aluminium alloy... mutch safer.... this year.

    Thank you,

This info adds a different perspective for sure.I have not committed to them yet and wanted to hear others thoughts and expieriences with them.I dont feel like breathing anything poisonous due to my ignorance.Great post.

  4. It must just be one of those days! I'm disagreeing with Dean again!

These are just our different opinions, folks. We are "divided" into 2 camps, one with a lower crossover point for bass horns, and one with a higher crossover point, like those enamored with the Jubilee... essentially it boils down to the "flavor" or nature of the sound we prefer.

My opinion is that if you want realistic "punch" to your bass, that comes from the bass bin, not the midrange driver! Bottom line is: which do you think moves more air, the woofer+horn or the midrange+horn?

I think most people become accustomed to what they hear the most, and come to expect that. That's all good and well. But the K33E is never going to be particularily "punchy" in the Khorn. Personally, I think the K33E is the main culprit, if you stay with it, you stay with a fairly low crossover. Even so, you can get more than enough punch out of the Khorn but you will have to switch to another driver. I've heard Khorn Klones that literally blew my socks off, with a different woofer, same 400Hz crossover point, so it's not particularily a limitation of the Khorn design!

But once you hear something else, things change. I'll never go back to a lower crossover point if I could help it. It's far better and realistic bass reproduction with a higher crossover point.

    Dana

    Dana,

After living with my system for 6 months now I tend to agree on that punch factor.

I have formed the impression due to the various level controls in my biamped system allowing me to voice the system vs a manufactured speaker with its passive set at the factory.Adjusting the Rane's bass levels 1 or 2 db can greatly impact the energy and impression of punch.I am not in any high or low x-over camp yet.I cross at 400hz but occasionally set it to 500hz.My impression is that the bass can really impact the midrange and that they work together to give that sense of impact and definition.Get the bass wrong and it screws up the mids ie loss of transparency, clarity, focus, impact and so forth.I do think we have preferences and need to listen to various configurations to find them.

  5. I understand where you are.My girlfriend of 3 years decided she didnt know where she was in life. Her divorce came thru last summer and I guess I got rebounded. She moved out this Jan.I am still torn up and trying to pick up the pieces.Music helps and it takes time.Everyone says go out and find another one.I dont think they understand that it is not that easy.My feelings ran deep and I dont think I could just fall in love with someone else at this time.I would probably end up rebounding her and no one deserves that.

    Good luck and think positive.

  6. I could possibly go with even steeper slopes of 48db per octive for added insurance.I think I would be afraid to stand on the system untill that point.98% of my listening is within a safe SPL range, just have to be cautious.

Anyone have a response chart for these?probably not with an Altec 511.

  7. Just an update here in case you want to ship LaScala's to CHINA.

The prospective buyer is mulling over the total price at this time and I cant blame him.

The cost of shipping came out to $350 for packaging and $1250 for air freight.Ocean freight came in at $1405.

He is also searching for possible shipping prices.Shipping will be his responsibility including payment to them seperate from the cost of the speakers.

If he chooses to buy them as per our aggreement I will deliver to any shipper of his choice in my area only after I have payment in my checking account via his transfer to my paypal account.

    This will be interesting.

  8. Get it in writting that the diaphragms are in perfect operating condition. I believe they are *very* expensive to replace. Also, aren't you crossing at 400hz? The TADs might not like going that low as well as the Altecs do. Shawn

    Hi Shawn,

The TAD's are rated from 500hz to 22k with a recommended crossover at 800hz w/12db slpoe and 500hz w/24db slope.I would have to probably adjust my Rane up to 500hz.

This purchase would be from a reputable speaker dealer that has 4 pair used and he is guarrantying them.On the second pair he claims one has a blown diaphram.

    Greg

    Will they do 500hz?

  9. In my recent never ending search for more efficiency for my highs I have ran across a fork in the road.

I am very interested in the BMS 4592 coaxial driver that D-MAN uses.At 118db/1 watt it sounds like the perfect match for my Wavelength Gemini's and love of the 45 tube(2 watts).

Today I am at a fork in the road.I have the chance to buy a pair of TAD 2001 compression drivers which seem hard to find and I'm not sure if they are even made anymore. The efficiency of these drivers is at 109db not as high as I was looking for BUT...

These drivers are like the holy grail.Way over engineered for exceptional sound and I think the price is right at $350 ea.That sounds like alot but I dont know the price new.Is the price inline for used? This would completely consume my budget for this upgrade but also will bolt directly to my 511B's.The BMS drivers would cost about $400 ea plus I am looking at a different horn(price unknown?) to make them work.

    Any thoughts would be apprciated.

  10. If you put a pair of LaScalas outside for a party, would you change any of the settings on Als' ES netrworks to boost or attenuate the upper end at all?

I know I need to try it to see what I think but, I thought I'd ask for thoughts.

Seems to me, the bass will sound better out in an open field ?? and if that is right, then I might want to boost the upper end a notch or two? Or am i backwards?

We're having a 4th of July party here (neighborhood party) and I was informed I'm supplying the horsepower for the music.

Just got Al's ES networks in today (Thanks Al & Shawn)

Interesting thread.I have never heard Scala's outside without walls renforcing the bass so I would asume there to be less bass output but probably better quality. If no sub is to be used they my guess would be attenuate the mids and high just a tad.

    my 2 cents.

    Greg

As an ambassador to the Klipsh sound at this party dont forget to STAND on it once and awhile, got to show them what Scala's can do!!! LOL

  11. This forum is great therapy. For me at least. I love banging out these little tales.

It stimulates my thinking processes just a little which is something I certainly don't get in the mind-numbing world of house painting.

Snuck a little Patrick O'Brien and "Flashman" into the tale along with a smidge of Maxwell Smart and Star Trek.

    Thanks for the kind comments.

Now I've got it figured out ,its all them paint fumes.

    couldnt resist[:D]

  12. from my childhood years I believe it went:

Iowa, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Missouri. I think it was the kentucky or illinois that was never made.

Oh and moon, you made me feel better about the rf-83 purchase when I was looking for cornwalls the whole time. If the RF-7 can hold its own I am sure the RF-83 can hold its own too.

Just googled it and the ships were:

    Iowa

    New Jersey

    Missouri

    Wisconson

  13. Hey I got out in 85 too? Were you east coast or west coast? What was your rate? I was an IC man. Mark

    Hello,

I was on the west coast stationed at Bremerton,Wa.I was a Boiler Tech. Second Class.

    Greg

Small world. 4 years Navy, Boiler tech as well. USS Wisconsin #4 Fireroom.

Wisconson, was that in the Iowa class battleships?I know in that class you had the Iowa and Missouri not sure of the others.Thought the Wisconson was one?

I was on the USS Sacremento,a fast combat replenish ship .We could cruise at 30 knots with a ship on each side tied with 4 cables each sending weapons.fuel and groceries to them.We had 4 600 psi boilers and battleship turbines from some other battleship class that had been decommissioned. We could carry 16,000,000 gals of fuel and about 8 mill of JP5.The length of her was right at 800'.
