  1. Dbert-I used a heat gun on low and held it over the IC for a few seonds loosening the solder, and then just pulled off the IC. It was pretty easy.

Todd-Thank for for some tips of using an ESR meter, I don't have access to one of those meters but that sounds like a good idea before changing out the caps.

  2. yo dbert, alright let me start over a little I was pretty excited posting that earlier and maybe didn't think it out all the way. First thing I noticed was that the subwoofer would only work after about 1/2 volume iratically and then my left channel went completely out. Then I proceded to replace the LM1973 with this http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=LM1973M-ND But after i replaced it, the left channel still didn't work at all, neither did subwoofer. So I replaced both of those Caps and now the Left channel works great, but no subwoofer at all. (my volume dial is working great too this entire time, its the original one) Then I decided to change the LM1973 back to the original one and this didn't change the subwoofer issue. So now I am waiting on an order of (4) 35v 4700uf to replace the bank of 4 capacitors as well as the odd sized one so they will be all new matching cap's. Replacing the lm1973 wasn't a hard task at all, not to come off sounding cocky but you just have to have some fine solder, a steady hand and patience. I used my Hakko's 936L's stock tip(a soldering iron) which isn't a micro tip by any standards. So you can pull it off with a normal soldering iron but have to only use a small portion of the tip, or just invest in a small pinpoint type tip, and or soldering iron if you want to DIY and it will be cake walk if you have experience with soldering. Ill keep everyone updated once I get the new caps in next week. Im crossing my fingers that this will make my sub come alive once more. And also will point people in the right tracks of repairing their IFI's on the cheap.

(radioshack only had the axial type, and I wanted to try to fix it bad so I bought the cap. Later in the day I found a local eletronic supply shop that has the correct ones and they're 1/2 the price as radioshack, 3.25$ vs. 6$)

  3. If anyone has any insight about my issue please respond. My Ifi's have been broken for some time now, but when they wern't my sub was cutting in and out depending on volume level, and I believe my left channel went out also. I replaced the LM1973 IC chip, and nothing changed. So today I was checking out the bigger capacitors and I noticed two of them were kinda puffed up a little on the top and have heard from someone that they were blown so I replaced the ones outlined in red, and now both channels work great, volume dial works fine. BUT I get nothing from the sub. Only a faint hum sound. So my question is what would make this hum sound, and should I go ahead and replace the other cap's? In red I outlined the caps I have already replaced.Thank you for any input on my issue.

Don't worry about the size of the bigger one, its the same specs as the one that I replaced and radioshack didn't carry it in radial form.

  4. I just fixed my Ifi's! Kinda sorta minus my subwoofer but both channels work properly. I just replaced one of the 4 capacitors, and the one I replaced looked a little convexed on the top. Boom now both my channels work! I bought the capacitor 35v 4700uf cap at radioshack for 6 bucks. Where do you reside Pedruin? Ill be glad to lend you a hand in soldering in a new capacitor If your local to me. [:D]

  5. Im going to try to replace that microcontroller inside the sub when I get around to it. Im not having any trouble with the 2 channels operating on their own, but Im having my subwoofer cut out at lower volumes. Ive checked the wires once, and their fully seated.

Heres a place to buy it at http://parts.digikey.com/1/parts/467232-ic-audio-attenuatr-w-mute-20soic-lm1973m-nopb.html

Is there a trick to desolder multi surface mounted point's at once?

  6. I am as well having this problem. Except, My rsx's are working fine and sound great, But It's my subwoofer that is acting up. It works on and off, but rarely. It will work if I turn the volume up atleast 1/2 way on the pod, it doesn't matter either 3.5mm jack or Ipod dock. Subwoofer setting doesn't make a difference of it turning on, the volume just has to be atleast 1/2 way and it will turn on and off inttermitently, It;s very annoying! Is it that IC chip going out?! [:@][:S]

  7. Im looking to buy some rsx's, 2 actually. If anyone is trying to sell any, or know anyone who is, can you help a fellow klipsch member out? Also, i was wondering how the RB51's stack up against a pair of RSX's. The only reason im contemplating getting some is because i can get them discounted off. Im going to be using them in a room about 12x10' room, with either a sub 10, or sub 12.

Amy can you move this to The Garage Sale please?

  8. Are you listening, Klipsch?

Unfortunately I don't think they are. I've lost a great deal of respect for Klipsch just from observing how they are handling these problems with the IFI. And of course what's their ultimate solution? Discontinue the product. Way to go.

Wtf are you talking about, The reason it got canceled was because of costs, as Jay said before in a post. Not because of a cry babies on the forums.

  9. How exactly are they breaking for you rick? Just not working once plugged in? I am sorry they are not working out for you, It's a shame, they're a very good 2.1 system. I would contact klipsch's support lines

  10. My room is about 12'x10'x12' almost square, Ive been wanting to get a little 2 channel system in it for a while. Right now I am using the Ifi's on my computer, and Im getting tired of them, i want something more. First question, Will a RB-51 surpass the RSX 5 in SPL? I think it will, and i hope soo, because i can get a new set of RB 51's for pretty cheap, and I think it's a good deal i shouldn't pass up. Furthermore, My subwoofer choice's right now are 10" Dayton titanic III, or the 12", in kit form. A sub12, or a used RSW-10, if i can find one for 400ish range. But i doubt that. And finally for the receiver, I would want a nice 2 channel receiver for 200 or less. (I dont plan on upgrading to 5.1 or greater any time soon) I think this sony one will be adequate.

  11. nope... the OP is correctthe 80 GB is the same as the 60 in thicknes...

Hes right, the 30 is the least thickest, then the 60&80 are the same. Its a big diff comparing the 30 and 60 or 80 in thickness, its fat! If you had a 20gb 3rd gen, use the next adapter size smaller and you'll have little play at all.

  12. Your hearing you ipod HDD spooling, and that apple dosen't have a good filter for this. It's only noticable on some speakers, ironically your Ifi's are soo good that you car actually hear that noise, its probally around 20-22Khz. I would say your ipod is getting old, and use your computer instead.

  13. Hey jay, long time man, i haven't been on these forums ina while, do you think costco would return something that they don't have it stock anymore? I want to get a new pair of Ifi's, from either klipsch, or prefurably Costco, idk about their policys, so it you would have a opinion about it before i give them a call that would be cool. BTW did you get a sub for thoes RF-7's i think i remmebr you got?
