  1. Hey all - I'm looking for an inexpensive way to get some sound out on my patio. I'd be hanging the speakers under the eaves so they'd be out of direct sun and rain, but still outside. I may be able to come into some ksb1.1s - and had considered hanging them outside. I know they are not specifically designed for this, and that the dispersion on the tweeter may not be optimal if I hang them horizontally. But at the moment the weatherproof speakers seem to be going for more than the budget allows at this point. Any opinions or experience? Thanks, Steve
  2. Hey all - I just going through trying to set up a home theater. I'll be in a room about 20' wide and 24' deep with a standard ceiling. The TV will be on the 20' wall, and the associated amps, etc. could go there as well. In fact for the center and mains, they most likely will. Since I'm using separates, I could move the amp for the rear to the back of the room, avoiding a long speaker cable run. Of course, this means a long signal cable run. Anyone have any experience or opinions on this one? Given the conduits I've run, I'd have to pull bulk cable for the signal cable, as the rca plugs won't pass through. Is there a source or part number for suitable cable (belden, etc.)? Thanks a million. Steve
  3. It seems as though the great majority of subwoofers available are the powered type using some sort of digital hybrid (BASH?) amplifier. Though I don't know, I'm assuming that these are low cost amps that put out lots of power - but don't have great specs. Or may have OK specs in the frequency range in which they operate. They do have to deal with transients etc, and seem to work fine. If that is the case, if one was to use a passive sub - isn't it a waste to use a high quality amp capable of running 20-20khz when the amp will never be asked to process signals above say 100 hz? Just a thought. Steve
  4. Hey All- I've got a pair of heresys on loan from a friend with surplus equipment (must be a nice problem to have?!). Anyway, I really like them and am in the market for a pair for myself. There seems to be plenty for sale - both 1's and 2's. Is there a general consensus of which is better or if there is a characteristic different sound between them? What about build or component quality? Thanks for your feedback. Steve
  5. Yes - the heresies do sound fabulous. Several of my friends love music but are not audio freaks and thus have never heard it properly. We actually sit late night and just listen to music - and they always comment how unbelieveably transparent the sound is and that they've heard things they've never heard before. As it should be. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion on the P1000. I hadn't considered CSW before, but I do like the finish on the unit and the remote controls as you pointed out. I also like the fact that the unit will accept pre amp inputs instead of just speaker level or LFE input. And if that unit could keep up with the LaScalas volume wise, it should have no problem with the heresies. BTW, I've long lusted over LaScalas but somehow had it in my head that they were just too big. I'm fortunate to have a high end shop in town which has lots of high end second hand gear and they have a set in the shop. They really aren't as big as I thought. Hmmmm......
  6. After many years of making do with sub par sound equipment due to family and other priorities in my life, I finally decided to upgrade my sound. Sadly to discover that the audio industry had largely shifted to home theater and left 2 channel high end sound to a very select few manufacturers. My first iteration of the upgrade has been with a pair of Heresy 1's running off a NAD 1700/2200. The sound is great and the speaker size is perfect for my family room (Approx 17x14x8.5). While I do intend to get a pair of Forte's, I don't think they'll fit real well with my family room arrangement which is where I do a lot of listening. I intend to use them as front channels for my future home theater. Anyway, I really like the heresys - the sound is just as I remember. Tho the bass is a bit weak. I'm considering a powered sub, and am wondering if anyone has any experience with a sub with herersys for music listening. I've also heard good things about the KG4s for a smaller speaker, perhaps that would help as well. Some of the subs I've heard can certainly rattle the floor, but what I'm after is a "musical" sub. I've heard good things about Klipsch of course, as well as svs, outlaw, and hsu. I'd certainly appreciate any comments. Thanks.
