  1. Since/if DACs all sound different, and carefully crafted DACs sound best, shouldn't there be more difference in the sound of all inexpensive DACS?

I can't really hear the difference between a CD played back on the analog output of my Rotel RCD-02 CD player or its digital output fed into my AVR's DAC.  Both sound the same; both image the same... to me.

So... since I want to use a subwoofer, I use the AVR DACs because it does bass management.

As mikebse2a3 pointed out, resistance and impedance are not the same thing, although they use the same value (ohms).  Checking the resistance with an ohmmeter will tell you whether you have continuity (no broken wires or connections, for example), but does not show you the impedance of the speaker.

The impedance shows what the amplifier is seeing while the speaker is operating in its cabinet or driving its horn.  It varies greatly with frequency, so the single impedance number (4 ohm, 8 ohm, whatever) assigned to a speaker is a nominal value, really more of a judgement call than an absolute value.

Yes....my test shows approx. 2/3 of what true value is.

Close enough to show what ohm output I should be using on my amps.

    3.2-3.3 = 4ohm speaker.

The tops....measure 12...which calls for 16ohm output. Done!

    Next topic? lol

Requires too much equipment to accurately measure the ohm, but what I did was absolutely good enough to tell me what output to be using.

Except it isn't.  A 4-ohm driver can become an 8-ohm driver once it's coupled to a horn (i.e. the acoustic part mentioned earlier).  And since impedence varies with frequency, I don't see that measuring DC says anything relevant.

  3. Great for you finding all these great deals!

Do you think the extra bass you heard was due to more even coverage or simply louder output?

If you dialed down the first two subs a bit to match up the level by the third sub, would it sound the same?

I guess you'll find out when you recalibrate.

(Someday I'll build a second sub just to even out my coverage)

I'm thinking any HT system consisting of 4 k-horns is pretty impressive ! irregardless of how you spin it

BTW : DW posted that pic 15 or 20 years ago ,i think your being Baited

I am impressed that you remember pics posted 15 or 20 years ago!

  5. As for the privacy comment , once a disc is purchased you can do with it what you want , there is no law against making a back up copy ... 90% of Blu-rays now come in a combo pack that actually gives you a Digital copy for those who don't have the software to rip a Blu-ray .

The law states you can't play or broadcast to the public .

    I said i don't buy them or rent them , did'nt say i don't copy their files

If you don't buy them, you can't copy their files legally.  You are contradicting your earlier comment about making a backup copy.

  6. Interstellar is one of th best movies I have seen in years.  (EDIT: Glad I hadn't read the #1144 spoiler before I saw the movie!)

Whiplash has great music, but ended too suddenly for me.  I felt like 30 minutes were missing.

Peter Aczel (The Audio Critic) makes it very easy. All amps, CDPs, DACs, preamps, sound the same. Any $200 receiver will do, and all you need to do is find speakers you like. He came to this by subjecting himself to continual ABX testing,

Sums up my feelings pretty well. I use an inexpensive receiver.

which is exactly what I predicted would happen. Anyone can see the logic of it. He's a crank. A nut. His magazine in the 70s though was very interesting.

I must be a crank too then.

Logic error. You might be a crank, but not necessarily.

Sorry, I had assumed that was the reason for your comment.  Never assume...

I don't care if people like and own fancy cables, but I do care when I see posts trying to convince new people to spend a huge amount on wire when they are budgeting $1000 for a receiver and $2000 on speakers.  Spending any extra money on better speakers and using monoprice wire is money better spent IMHO.  People are free to believe anything, but when they try to convince others that these beliefs are facts if when I start debates.

Have you seen that anywhere you can point to here? I never have. The most I have heard people suggest is "try it, see if you like it." I see no arm twisting of any kind, let along anything along the lines you are suggesting.

Not in this thread, but I have have seen it often enough to bring it up here.

If you come across that post where someone tried to convince a new member to spend a huge amount of money on wire, please do point it out. It would be instructive to see what was said. I really think that is rarer than a 5 legged dog.

It's fairly common practice on some other forums; granted not this one.

Any thoughts on how we could defeat the X-Curve. I could always take apart the speaker and post some more pics of the crossover if needed. I believe there were some crossovers where you could just add a jumper wire around a point and it would defeat???

That's the case with my (older) KPT-100, but each crossover is different of course.

Here's the old thread on bypassing the x-curve on the KPT-100s. It might be useful figuring out what you need to do. For the KPT-100s it was a single jumper.

Bob Crites posted a schematic with the fix on it. It bypasses a couple of parts.

Right.  I have had it listed in my profile for a while, in case anyone ever needed it.
