  1. My room is too small for a vintage 2 channel system AND a 5 channel HT system. So, I sold all the vintage gear (except for the Thorens TT) and bought a Sony (GASP!) 7.1 110wpc receiver. It has a decent 2 channel mode but I'm unable to play LPs because the phono section is so bad sounding. There's always tradeoffs with stereo gear. Right now I'm relatively happy with my HT system but I do miss the vintage gear... Especially the LPs. Of all the amps I used to power the khorns I have to say that a fisher sa300 sounded best... a close second was hafler dh500 and then probably the adcom gfa555. I'll admit it now... the 600w dyna-twins actually sounded the worst! Go figure.
  2. These warfedale w70d's are awesome! I was listening to them outside on the patio while I cleaned them. They sound great! I'm going to bring them inside & do some a/b tests against my Khorns today. The Altecs sounded like Altecs. I don't care for the honky blatting sound from the Altec horns and the bass always seems to be less than what I'd expect a 15" woofer to be capable of. I've owned a bunch of Altecs and they all seem to sound similar.
  3. Looking the stuff over I realized there's only one EV T35. Its a kit in the original boxes ...has the crossover and dial etc. It's the polished metal face with a white back and the x over is white also. Kinda sexy to look at. The warfedales are in nice condition. I think they're walnut. They strike me as being very very well made. The valencia risers are really punky... falling apart actually. They must have gotten wet in a cellar flooding or something. The boxes and tops are solid and in nice shape though. The wood lattice grills are unbroken. I'll take the backs off tomorrow and see which drivers are inside.
  4. Somebody pinch me! I just picked up the stereo gear. I walk in his cellar and see a pair of Altec Valencias, a pair of warfedale w70d's, a pair of NOS EV T35's w/xovers, a single NOS 15" Jensen coaxial, Pair of NOS EV wolverine 3 ways, sony ps4300 TT, Empire TT, Fisher 400 and a bunch of other goodies!
  5. I agree... I asked her what happened to the bidding war guys. She said... havent heard from them lately right now a person in the uk is interested Shes about to get scammed me thinks.
  6. I just contacted the guy. He said it was all inherited from his father who was a stereo nut. The Altecs are in they're original cabinets. I'm super curious about what model they are... he wasn't sure. He said he's got a bunch of other stuff too! The fisher 400 may be just the thing for my khorns. I love these kinds of finds.
  7. speakers & stereo equipment, incl Fisher 400 receiver, Altec, Wharfedale, Jensen Coaxial, Coberelex, Univ horn, Wolverine speakers, $150 B/O I'm picturing a pile of speaker components on the floor with a dusty fisher 400 on a table ... or ... maybe a mint pair of altec valencias and a perfect fisher 400 with case?
  8. Just a quick update... these havent sold yet. Surprised? I didn't think so. The seller must have been pulling my leg when she said there was a bidding war on them and they were up to $7000+. Silly girl.
  9. i recently bought, used and sold a gfa555. It sounded pretty damn good on my khorns. I assume the 535 would too.
  10. I bought one of the new Toshibas (3960) thinking it would be a do-all unit for my system. It doesn't have a TOS link out so I could never listen to DVD movies in dolbly digital sound. For months I couldn't figure out why my new 7.1 receiver wouldn't even recognize and play any 5.1 DVDs in dolby digital. Come to find out it was the cheesy little toshiba DVD players lack of an optical output. I hooked up my old Kenwood which has an OPTICAL OUT and was astounded by the sound coming out of my speakers while watching a movie. The little blue light on the receiver even came on for the first time ever! WooHoo! I have a slightly used Toshiba 3960 if anyone wants it? $50 shipped. If you're going to use the player for watching DVDs and listening to music make damn sure it has an optical output.
  11. I've bought, sold, designed, built and repaired a lot of tube gear and I've never seen this degree of craftsmanship and overall excellence in a custom built amplifier. HUH? I think he needs to get out more often.
  12. I've been in contact with the female seller about the rosewoods. Evidently, after I posted the info here there's been a "bidding war" as she called it, for the khorns. She said her highest offer so far is $7900 I didn't realize they were such a hot item? What's the deal with the rosewoods guys? Someone here must be after em!
  13. Believe it or not it's nearly impossible to find anyone who'll repair vintage gear in upstate new york. There are a couple places but they both $uck. The stereo workshop in latham is a joke. Lake Electronics would rather you throw away your vintage gear then bother them to repair it. If you all know of some reasonable repair shops in NY that can and will work on vintage gear please do tell. I ship all my stuff from NY to a great guy in Indiana. It costs an arm and a leg for shipping but he's fair and honest with his work/prices... AND... there's no one else around.
  14. I think a stereo stand that takes up an entire 1/2 of the room is a little much. It looks like a jungle gym.
  15. In the paper today. My adrenalin went crazy when I saw the title but quickly subsided when I saw the asking price. KLIPSCH CORNER HORNS collector's item, approx 20yrs old, mint cond, solid rosewood, (5'x4'), sound like symphonic Nirvana, $5500 Clifton Park, NY (518) 221-7263
  16. The hafler dh500 is a wonderful sounding amp with the larger Khorns. I used one for a while. They're a bargain on ebay but shipping can be tough on the big amp if not packed really well. Another is the adcom gfa555 amp and the gfp555 preamp. These also sounded excellent with my khorns.
  17. avenged sevenfold is pretty interesting
  18. what a bunch of hodge podge homemade stuff. Even if it did sound good and he paid $20k or more it isn't going to fetch $12k.
  19. I've used both the sx1280 and the sx1980 on 1979 cornwalls. I liked the sound. They're both extreme overkill with khorns or cornwalls. They went off to ebay. I miss my beastly marantz 2330 the most. That sounded fantastic on the CWs!
  20. I can't come up with 10 but I can come up with 5 that I have used personally... In no particular order they are... adcom gfa555 hafler dh500 pioneer sa9500 genesis stealth dynaco st400 All used with 1979 klipschorns
