  1. A bit of extra horsepower under the hood never hurt anyone. I use amps rated at 1.5X to 3X the power handling of my speakers. Headroom and freedom from compression is a good thing to have. Just purchased Parasound's JC1 monoblocks to drive my RF7's and a A21 for RF5's plus a A23 for RB5's. Why not treat your speakers right and match them to some good amps? I relegated my ATI amps to driving Paradigm Sig. mini monitors.

As for my various Dynaudio they are matched with Krell,SimAudio,Bryston and all I can say is it was totally worth it.

Even for sub duty why not a nice Crown iTech or MacroTech or QSC PowerLight PL380. Its all good.

Amps, speakers ...audio in general the more headroom. The better, not at all needed but.Why not?

  2. Roger Anger,

Carver amps,I do not like Carver amps and own ZERO Carver amps. With 40W you have plenty when your speakers are 100dB efficient for a 1 watt input, measured 1 meter away from the speaker.

How loud do yo listen to? What room size? Distance from speakers to listening position. Tell me you seriously use more than 20W and over 100W on peaks.

Why did I buy Parasound's larger monoblocks, let me guess...because I like overkill. Like I needed or pushed even a 15W tube amp driving the efficient Klipsch in a small room. Why did I buy larger SimAudio amps...to drive speakers that probably not take all the amps can deliver? Because I like overkill.

Most importantly WHY do YOU sound so angry? It is obvous a more capable amp is a superior choice when you have the money and space. Even if it will be used ~10% (during some very loud and rare times you show it off).

I use 20 drivers in my sub system,WHY? Because I can and why ~50KW in amps ...because I can and this is my kind of fun.

  3. High power(rated at say 200-300W/channel) amps are NOT needed for any larger Klipsch speakers, this is a false and uterly chilish myth started by people with audio knowledge of a..." insert funny qualifier ".

What you need is an amp capable of ~40-50W honnest watts capable driving difficult(at times) loads. Again take a Parasound Z amp (45w/channel) and you will hear it beat a Yamaha/Denon...(list the budget receivers here) receiver rated at 100W /channel.

CURRENT is where it is at. Forget the low ERS,JPS,MTS(joking) turbo hooopla matched ultra speed caps...it is hoopla to put soap in your eayes and ears and make you buy a "new" old technology. Fact of the matter is you will NOT hear these speed gain,as human ears start to roll of way before 20KHz and the BS claims to 2GHz and more are there to sell the product.

Be it banks of small caps or a few larger "can" sized caps,if implemented well you can have an outstanding amp(Krell,Mark Levinson and SimAudio all use HUGE cans and sound AMAZING(beating the snot out of too many pro type amps using banks of small caps). It is all in the know how of the engineer ,not in what looks great on paper.

Same with the false myth small woofers 8" in dimameter are faster than a 15" woofer. Faster at what? Reproducing a 80Hz tone! Gimmie a break,a BREMBO break.

It is not about the cap size but the aproach taken to get high current when needed. Look at BelCanto and NuForce amps...tiny,puny looking and deliver GOBS of low end "torque" and drive difficult loads with aparent ease.

  4. Nah nah nah some still do not grasp a simple concept !

It is not you need anamplifier with a huge wattage rating to drive the RF-7 propely, you need n amplifier capable of driving more complex and changing loads that varry with frequency. The RF-7 have dips in the load they present to an amplifier depending on frequency.

This is what makes receivers sound anemic when powering the RF-7's.

Take a tiny Parasound Zamp 45 watts/ channel(60W into a 4 Ohm load) and it beats flat most if not all receivers under $1000 amp sections(in two channel mode driving the RF-7's full range).

Now take a Parasound Halo A21, this amp is rated at 250 W into a 8 Ohm load and 400W into a 4 Ohm load. This unit wakes up RF-7's like no receiver can(besides the very large Pioneer reference receiver(~$6000) with ICE amp modules(also used by BelCanto and a few others)that receiver is damn close to the large Parasound.

Fact is ALL the budget receivers have more or less anemic power amp section,ALL of them. I use power amps since many years and ditched receivers(even a Denon 5802)in favor of the stand alone power amp, where I pay for the actual AMP. And not 57000 worthless echo modes(called DSP acoustic simulations worth ZERO value).

Yamaha is one of the most funny ones,a truck load of bull DSP modes. Read sound coloring garbage no self respecting audiophile will ever use.

I dare you to take YOUR receiver and compare with a good quality separate power amp and not notice a gain in bass control and the speakers come alive.

Run the RF-7 full range. The gain is real and too obvious.

I now use the Parasound JC1 monoblocks with RF-7's...they are alive and kicking. No receiver can match that setup.

  5. IB is the way to go to get the absolute maximum performance per dollar invested.

    * FiCar has shady customer service,no phone to all and I sent them two emails to buy teh BTL18's and for the IB drivers never got any repply !? A serious company ,you can call them and speak with someone there,no phone listed on their webpage!? All other companies I could call and speak with the owner or at least someone when some questions (shipping , quality control related came).

  6. Matching K-Horns output down to 16Hz today is quite east to do. Four 18" sub drivers like the Maelstrom-X ported ,~12cu ft per driver,8 inch diameter flared port. Yes that translates into 48cu ft total. It is a man cave, right ? Here WAF is stomped into mud and performance comes first, not cutie pie looks.

Four ported Maelstrom-X,even Mach 5 IXL18.2.2 dribers in EBS configurations(ported,~12cu ft per driver again)you have a killer sub array to match your K-Horns and reach SPL of over 126dB even at 16Hz.

  7. One note... I hope for you this was sarcastic.

These sealed subs have better articulation than 99% of comercial subs on the market, I use JL Audio's Fathom, Velodyne HGS18 and Aerial's SW12 for reference,to judge the quality.Maybe these are one note subs too. I judge quality of the original on various high end headphones with proper headphone amps. One note, that is best used to described a KSW subwoofer.

Do you even know what makes a one note sub,if they you would know quality drivers in inert sealed boxes, with Q around .5-.7 with proper PEQ is anything but a one note sub.

LMS-Ultra sealed are one note wonders maybe, that is why you purchased your LMS-5400? [:P] You know a LMS-5400 with no box, that will produce a one note called CANCELLATION. LOL

  8. [:P]

Yeah sure I need subwoofer help from nayone. [;)] Well Klipschers I have put my trusty RF7 quartet and RC7 back to work...in the tiny 600cu ft room, cut at 80Hz and powered by my newly purchased Parasound HALO power amps,A23,A2 and soon JC1's(on order they did not have them in stock...a week's wait).

Here is my "tiny" HT and as you can see no display,as I have first to place my second Acoupower 18 on top of the bottom center sub.

The Parasound A21 ,will be moved to a rack more suited fir its size on the opposite side of the room containing other power amos and gear.

  9. JL Audio subs are buit better than competing subs, thsi is a FACT. That is why you pay more, inspect the cabinet, the amp,the driver...the whole package. It just says QUALITY all over it.

The 212 willhave enough output to satisfy even hard to please audiophiles in mid sized rooms, for a very large room I would rather go with dual f113's,more output at the same price.

  10. Very good amplifiers,Itested the classic line at home,I own the Statement two channel 375W/8Ohms per channel unit. Superb control in the bass, natural midrange and non fatiguing upper registers to make a crude description.

However I found Parasound HALO like A21 and JC1 monoblocks to equal and best the Antem Statement in some aspects, both Antem and Parasound Halo are very good matches for Klipsch speakers.

Another choice would be the SimAudio MOON W5 or Bryston 4B SST.All superbly crafted and designed to run for years.I have these too and like them very much.

In face there are five power amp companies I am sold to.... Tenor Audio(very costly, state of the art tube and hybrid amps), Bryston,SimAudio, Parasound(HALO) and KRELL.

The best part...Parasound HALO amps, less costly than the competition and hold their own with the very best.

After 10-15 years time to check the caps and replace them if needed. That is true for all amps no matter how inexpensive or expensive they may be.

  11. RF-7 come alive with some meaty solid state amps,I now use theParasound HALO monoblocks to power my RF7's. Now we are talking juiced up,and what combination! Stunning match.

I am very impressed with Parasound's HALO line of amps and the monoblocks are something to behold (sound wise),the power supply uses almost 2KVA or transformer and 160000 microfarad in caps. That is PER channel as these are monoblocks.

Even tried the little Parasound Z series 45W/channel micro amp...amazing performer and great match for RF7's! To anyone looking for great solid state amplification match with Klipsch speakers,Parasound has many answers.

  12. DIY will get you the most output for the dollar. DIY done right will provide you with stellar SQ also.

An example of a great DIY project is four Mach 5 IXL 18's loaded in ~6 cu ft boxes(per driver and sealed) powered by two Behringer EP2500 power amps and using the eD crossover/PEQ box.

You can go ported using two of these drivers, each in its own EBS ported box, here using one Behringer EP2500 power amd and the eD crossover/PEQ box.

A third viable solution is IB,using four Mach 5 IXL 18's backed by one EP2500(plenty and more than enough in this configuration) with the eD crossover/PEQ box.

Just three examples among many how to get ALOT of performance for the dollar. I went the sealed route with twenty 15's and 18's .....I know there is no way back to little commercial subs for me.

  13. Q-Man,

Did you have a pair of Sunfire Signature subs before? One Epik Conquest no doubt takes two Sunfire Sigs to the cleaners and back. [:P] I had a Sig,Mark II and Super jr. also...all SOLD. No more tiny "subs" for me...I agree a Epik Conquest will do justice to large efficient Klipsch speakers.

  14. HSU makes very good subs, they lack what i call SLAM. Klipsch subs have SLAM by the bucket and the large Klipsch speakers are incredible when impact and slam are high on your list.

Last Sunday I connected my RF7's ro my Krell FPB in the living room...holllly COW.

  15. 150W RMS ,this unit should at least deliver 300W on peaks(when needed),enough to get plenty of these drivers. I would use ~500W RMS amps to get more out of the drivers, but 150W is enough to get plenty loud.

Also depends of your listening habbits and expectations. A single 12" drivers cannot do miracles. Here a ported cabinet is a near must,as the single sealed 12" will not move enough air to be of much worth when going below 25Hz.

  16. Major majot updates comming...

The "tiny" HT is growing,I will be using four gear racks to stuff my "tiny" HT gear.

Here is a shot of the mess, other gear is on the floor(disgrace) on the opposite side. [:'(]

A bit too much gear...on top. And I have yet to place my iTech's,the second PL380 and my new "surprise" giant receiver and bluray player. I suffer greatly.

  17. Crown loses to QSC in the mid priced range. As QSC has the PLX2 and RMX series both very good, and getting closer to spec than Crown's XTi and XLS.

Where Crown shines is at the upper end, with Crown's MacroTech and iTech. Here QSC has the PowerLight(beefed up PLX2).

The MacroTech reputation is set in stone, all around beasts.
