  1. Yes it is indeed Altec gold but there's no green. I'll save you the long story on how I came upon it, but to say it's mint is an understatement. (It was right out of the box when I got it.) I really love the thing.

I did a little background research and found out it sold for $496.00 in 1964!

To me it's a classey little number.

Now if I can only find a nice pair of effecient little speakers. (It puts out great sound from my LaScalas)

    Regards,

  2. One thing thePacific Northwest is blessed with is more microbrewed beers than anywhere I've ever heard of. I love a couple brewed by a local group with several pubs in and around Portland, Oregon. One is called Purple Haze, it's almost not fair to call it a beer at all. It's the cleanest tasting brew I've ever had in my life. It has the essence of berrys but taste almost too clean for your pallet to even think it's beer. (It's not for everyday but I do love it)

As far as something mainstream and over the counter Bass Pale Ale is far and away my favorite. Ice cold with a squeeze of lemon!

  3. Hello all:

Space is a big concern for my little bedroom system. I will be driving them with a mint 1964 Altec Tube receiver that puts out 20wpc. If they are towers they need to be no wider than about 10", and no deeper then about 12". I'll live with whatever height I can get. I don't mind a pair of bookshelf speakers but again the space thing might sink me.

Any Kilpsch Forum members in the Northwest with some effecient speakers that might fit my bill. (I'd like to keep the cost no higher than $400.-$500., but two or three hundred would be great too.

I know it's a long shot but I thought it would be worth a try.

    Regards,

  4. I spent almost nine years working as a Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technical Represenative for General Electric Medical Systems. It kept me on the road between 250 and 300 nights a year. I got thirteen countrys and every state and Provence in Canada out it but there was no life whatsoever.

Now I'm an MRI Technologist at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland, Oregon. It's so nice to be off the road,...

    I'm very blessed,

  5. Well when litterally every component in the amp and the amp itself is produced by poor suckers making 25 cents a hour the cost to production drops. Then couple the absolute lack of enviormental controls placed on industry over there and there you go. Every time we spend a dollar on products from countries like China we the consumer are cutting are own throats. Keep supporting countries with this type a standard of living and soon are standard of living will be the same.

I suggest someone that has quality gear buy one and report back what they hear. I bet it sounds like dung.

    Craig

I second every point you have made Craig...

But us Americans, and I count myself as one, just find it difficult to resist. I guess I hope it does sound like "Dung," so we all won't begin to jump on this kind of stuff.

For what it's worth, I have no skills in electornics like Craig does, (and he can attest to how much I've spent with him!) and if a fella is willing to keep his/her eyes open there are some great deals to be had on vintage gear that sounds very nice.

    My two centavos.

  6. Hello all:

I found a very nice pair of Hereseys at Fred's Sound of Music in Portland, but space is a limiting factor for my little bedroom system. If anyone is in the Portland, Oregon area they want $369.00 and they look to be very nice.

Anyway I need a pair of tower speakers or some bookshelf speakers with stands for a reasonable price. I will be driving them with an Altec "Astro" receiver vintage from 1964. It is in excellent condition but only puts out 20WPC. (so I need fairly high effeciency)

    Anyone?

Those Totem Rainmakers are fairly pricey, no? I heard a pair last summer and thought they were awesome. However, you could get a used pair of Khorns for that amount and still have $$ to spare. (If I remember correctly).

My listening room is just a tad larger than yours, but khorns would work!

2nd choice, Cornwalls. A GREAT jazz speaker and WONDERFUL at lower levels.

Those Totem Rainmakers are really fine sounding speakers, though, to be sure.

I agree in that I like Totem speakers with one big exception, (for me) they are not very effecient so it closes the door on any of the several low wattage tube amplifiers I trade off between the three HiFis I have.

  8. Okay I guess I understand a bunch of people who really take their music seriously making light of those who buy into the Bose marketing machine.

But I remember a time not all that long ago when I listened to a little pocket transistor radio because that's all I had. Then I got a Sears stereo that was plastic and had detachable speakers and I thought I was in heaven. Music is wonderful and I would venture a guess that the majority of people world wide who listen to music do so a "Systems" that would be VERY easy to make fun of.

People like those who frequent this board are a VERY VERY small percentage and I believe we should look at ourselves as lucky.

If someone finds pleasure in their Bose wave radio I am happy for them.

    Flame away,

  9. I've always been a Clint Eastwood fan.

At the beginning of The Outlaw Josie Wales Eastwood is cooling his heals in a dirty small town's jail. A local middle aged woman asked the jailer if she can look at the prisoner, and the jailer let's her.

As she stands in front of the bars she is clearly disgusted and says: "If I were a man I'd thrash you. To which Eastwood stands up and slowly walks over to the woman and says: "If you weren't wearing a dress I'd think you were a man you ugly old wart."

  10. It has three fuses total. Two are the 2A 3AG that I have mentioned and I'm assuming that they are one for each channel. One other fuse is a 1.5Amp fuse.

Update, I bought some fuses labeled 2A 3AG and they are slow bolw fuses.

I did a search and found a thread on the Altec site and this receiver cost $597.00 in 1963!!!

It is a close to mint as anything could be for being made in 1963,...It's just beautiful. I fired it up and put it through a soft start circut. It sounds so nice on my LaScalas. Then I hooked it up to drive my Klipsch KP301s and the thing really rocks. Needless to say, I love it!

    Regards,

    Bill Woodward

  11. I'm glad you mentioned it because now that I think about it a fast blow fuse would be most safe if there is any question on an application.

If anyone knows what a 2A 3AG fuse stands for exactly I'm all ears. I'll be heading for a local electronics store after work. If I'm shot down there I'll stop by a high end HiFi store to see if I can find some.

    Thanks again,

    Bill Woodward

  12. A friend of mine clears out lots of Altec, JBL, Klipsch, and other professional equipment and sells it all over the world,....And sometimes I get the left overs!

Today I picked up a BEAUTIFUL old Receiver, all tube, and it's an Altec Astro.

Does anyone know anything about it?

It needs a fuse, it's just missing and I tried both of the channels with the one fuse in it, and it works great! It says "2A 3AG only." Of course I have 1 amp, 2.5 amp and 3 amp fuses so I'll have to find a "2A 3AG" fuse. Will any 2Amp slow blow fuse work?

Thanks for the help in advance.

I don't know about XM soounding like "Pig Crap" but I do know FM on over ninty percent of the markets in the United States may sound much better but the average play list of these FM stations is between 200 and 300 songs. (And that my friend REALLY sucks!)

No replys saying, "Not my FM station," because my statement can be verified. FM is a far cry from what it used to be.

I love the sound from my Scott LT110B, but paying radio is making FM station owners, (large corporations) sit up and take notice. People who love music want to hear more than the same cuts OVER and OVER and OVER!!!

No way, I use the 130 as a line stage. I havent ever even used the phono section of it yet. (I got out of vinyl a ways back).

Craig totally worked it over for me and as always I couldnt be happier with it. The sound is gorgeous and the biggest reason I wanted one so bad was for the loudness switch. I am a big low volume background music listener and a loudness switch just totally "does it" for me. I havent found a piece of equipment outside of the few Scotts I have had with loudness controls that I have fell in love with yet.

That may change though possibly as I hope to have my hands on a Peach linestage here soon. More to come on that possibly later.

    Thanks Bob:

I have a Scott 299D that's been completely gone through by another audio fellow and I love it. I recently picked up a Scott LT110B tuner from Craig, (his personal tuner) and it is as good as I'll ever need.

If you look on Craig's work list I'm the "Bill W" who sent my McIntosh C11 pre for him to work over. I'm sure it will be wonderful too. Time will tell.

I'd really enjoy trying a Scott Pre amp on one of my HiFis.

    Good luck,

  15. Everyone's got an opinion and mine has has nothing to do with the fact that I live in the Pacific Northwest. ANY coffee, 100% Jamacian Blue Mountain, 100% Kona, not to mention high and lower end regional brands will not do it for me anymore.

I drink four to five cups of coffee a day and I finally jumped out on a limb and bought a Pasquini 90 Espresso machine. I have become very fond of LaVazza "Blue" Espresso. A double shot in a pre heated cup with and equal portion or steamed non fat milk gives a Very robust cup of Joe that works for me.

    Bill Woodward

    Portland, OR.

P.S. I got a special deal on my Pasquini Espresso machine through Illy to buy their espresso/coffee for a year and I still find myself buying Lavazza "Blue" Espresso to run through my Pasquini 90.

  16. I appreciate the help, your replys tell me I have trouble shot the issue fairly well right now.

I have AA crossovers in them, (brand new purchased from a guy from Arkansas from this site) but the issue was the same with the speakers original AL crossovers.

The terminals and little connection dohickey thing that takes the wire connection from the inside of the cabinet to the outside of the cabnet has been checked. (although not removed for the check) I looked it over as carefully as possible with a flashlight after disconnecting the wires.

As far as it being some kind or amp or pre amp thing,....trust me, no way. It's been tried with several different pairs.

I have not physically removed the woofer from the cabnet but when I connect wires to it both from iside the cabnet and outside the cabnet, it plays, although again not anything like the other woofer in the other cabinet.

The speaker shows between 3.2 and 3.9 ohms. (on my volt/ohm meter it goes back and forth as it updates but maybe this is because I'm not able to hold the test leads with perfect contact for very long)

I have NOT pushed on the cone with anything but the smallest amount of pressure with my hands.

I will take the cabinet bottom off again to check the soldering as much as I'm able.

I'm just wondering what the defect to this speaker could be. How much does a replacement woofer cost if they are available?

    Thanks again, any more suggestions?

    Bill Woodward

  17. I have a pair of mint LaSclas and I needless to say I love them.

One of them was putting out so little bass that I began trouble shooting. I have gone through every possibility and now I know that one of the woofers although working, simply does not put out even twenty percent of the sound that the other one does. When I took the cabnet bottom off to check it out I'm fairly sure I was the first one to crack into to cabnet. Just like the rest of both speakers the inside is mint, but still I can say the woofer simply does not work as the woofer in the other speaker.

I understand basic loudspeaker theory but I'm trying to understand what exactly could be wrong with this woofer. Could the voice coil be sub par? I mean if the whole speaker did not work that would give me a logical next direction to go in but since it does in fact work but not even close to what the woofer in my other speaker what could be the issue with this speaker?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  18. Heaven knows I'm not bragging because others I have spoken to from this site have HiFi equipment that is so muuch nicer than mine.

I won't go without an amp because I have others that will fit the bill until I get one of the amps, (should they need repair) back from craig at NOSvalves should they break.

Regardless of the flames I receive one of my favoirte stand by amps is an old Scott Stereo 120 solid state unit. (all the fairly clean power I will ever need for the three HiFis I have in my home)

There's too many clean vintage amps out there that are very reasonably priced to go without an amp on your HiFi.
