  1. That is toooo funny! I'm having a similar experience here in Karachi, Pakistan. Many many of my friends (one of them a die-hard B&W fan), after having heard my Klipschorns, are scoping the city to find nice used pairs. Maybe I should write to corporate and work in some sort of commission structure, eh? -F
  2. Hey Guys, Getting a practically new MC275-MK-IV for my Klipschorns for about $3,000. Help me out with the following questions: 1) Love the tube sound on these speakers. However, I can't afford a tube pre right now. Have a nice AudioLabs pre, and a simple NAD one. Would it justify this jump at this time with either of the above pres and then upgrade later on? 2) Is the price ok? 3) Since I live in Pakistan, it is very difficult to get support over here. Anyone have experience as to how maintenance free these things are? I know people who have been running McIntosh products for the past 25 years without any major replacements / repairs. But when the time comes for repair, MAN is it a hassle! I've been following some of the forum posts for a while now, and it seems that some people prefer the Quads to the Mc's. Namely the II-forty monos. Any thoughts as to which is a better match, personal preferences notwithstanding? Thanks guys, -F
  3. Hey there. Can't seem to find good tube amplification over in Pakistan. What are your views about my NAD C270's powering my Klipschorns. I hooked them up and found the sound to be great, if not slightly lacking in bass. I have a pair of them, cause I was running them bridged on my Kef Q7s. Will probably pick up something Mcintosh when i travel next. Meanwhile, your views would be appreciated. -F
  4. Hmmm... interesting comments. The only problem that I have with the Kef Center (which, btw, is an EXCELLENT speaker!) is that have to turn the volume on that to the max (+10 db) and the horns to the min(-10 db) to be able to get a semblance of a matching level. Just tried out one of an old pair of KG 2.00 as the center. Much better match. Chris Robinson above mentioned that I should use two speakers for my center. Is that advisable? If so, is it possible without yet another stereo amp? Because the other KG 2 is quite lonely! -F
  5. Hey there! Had a Kef based HT system, with a wonderful pair of Q7s as my mains and a Reference Series Center. Great matching. However, since I've got the Khorns, I (read: my wife) wanted to get rid of the Q7's as we have no place to really put them. Though my preference, BY FAR, is music, a friend told me that the horns are really not very good for HT, as they are not as focused as speakers made specifically for this purpose. My experience with the Khorns paired with the Kefs have not been very good at all as the Kef Center is a very small speaker with not nearly the sensitivity that the horns have. Any comments on my friends views? -F
  6. Hey there! LOVING my Klipschorns! One question though. A nice Luxman pre is available to pair with my Quad 606 powering the Khorns. I was wondering if it's at all possible to connect it in such a way so that for music sources I could use the the Luxman and Quad combo, and for HT, use the Quad and my existing Marantz 7300. In other words, use the Marantz just for decoding HT signals. I know the Marantz has a pre-out. Really want to audition the pre, but am scared that I may like it and want to keep it, however impractical it may be. Help!! Thanks,

  8. Man, oh man! Thanks for the advice, guys! Changed the speakers to a new room. Stunning difference. All your comments regarding perhaps the K-horns not being for this fella... Well, the flat bass and sharp highs coming from the previous placement were not for anyone. What a sound stage I have in my new room now with the Horns placed about 14ft apart and the sitting area about 23 ft from the speakers. Also sealed the speakers using a rubber lining. Boom! It's a new speaker. Right now I'm running the Quad 606 with my Marantz HT amp acting as a pre amp. The bass is still slightly lacking, but this can be worked on with messing around / adding / subtracting the electronics. Investigating new universal players etc. Also, located a Luxman tube pre, which I'm going to hook up in a day or so. Crossovers, maybe later. Can these speakers be the mains of an HT system with a small center, like my KEF Reference Model 90?! So far, I have to turn the Horns' level down to -9 and the Center to +10! Thanks for all your guidance... but I still need more!!
  9. ---------------- PB / DM and others, Hmmmm... got your responses. Man this sounds like it's going to be a classic battle b/w the speaker that needs a great, sound-treated room, and a wife that just will not understand! Gonna put my money on the horns, though. Might have to play some Indian Punjabi dance music a few times to get her on "our" side!!! (Shudder at the thought!) The bass does get a little boomy when I walk around. So I guess that room treatments are in order. Will get to researching a bit. But it sounds like I will be keeping the speakers. I shall continue to post updates, in case anyone out there is interested. Should be getting down to changing their look as well. The black is a little sheen-less and quite dull and boring now. Was thinking of some two tone finishes. Let's get the sound in order first, though. Thanks,
  10. DM, Bass Traps? Panels?!?! Dude, I live in Pakistan. Not easy to get here, but will try to ask around. But being a liiiitle bit more specific would help. One thing though. The bass has certainly improved since I've shifted rooms... But it's still a far cry from how you're describing it. Will check to see about the leak if someone tells me how to do it. Thanks,
  11. PB, Tried it in a different room. Much smaller but carpeted, furnished, and curtained. HUUUUGE difference! Now they're actually getting fun to listen to. However, the bass is still certainly lacking. The oomph is just not there. And the highs are still very overpowering. On some recordings, the vocals almost sound harsh, although the Quad 606's have softened them up to some extent. FYI, the pre I'm using is a NAD C162 (until I can locate a nice CHEAP tube pre) with a Rotel CD-02 player. Amplification, I've switched between three different setups mentioned in my original post. How do I check to see if drives and crossovers are working ok? Also, I read in one of the posts some speakers tend to have leaky bass cabinets. How do I check? Can I get a "technical guide" somewhere on the web? Thanks,
  12. Hey there! I've been reading your posts for the past few months in order to get an idea of what to expect from a used '91 set of KHorns that had come to my attention.I finally went ahead and bought them a few weeks ago. Since then, I have tried and tried to make them sound anything remotely like the quality that I have imagined from the users in this forum, but "it just ain't happening!" The bass is loose even though I have placed them in the corner. The tweeters are painful in comparision to the woofer, and, all said and done, the sound is just plain flat. I have checked the polarities, tried different amplifications, bi-amping, single amping, different cables... Nothing seems to work. Is it possible that this room (13'x 30') is just not meant for the horns? (the speakers are placed on the 13' corners.) The amps I've tried are as follows: - NAD C230 in both mono and stereo modes (bi wired & single). - Rotel 1080 (bi & single). - The best result I got was from the Quad 606. Still, even that was far from a tight sounding bass. The room itself is looong, and sparsely furnished, with a marble floor. This flooring might be the reason for an echo which translates into painful listening. However, sad as this sounds, even the imaging that I get from my Kef Q7's with a Marantz HT amp is far superior. HELP!
