  1. Yeah it seems that decoders are somewhat rare now which I do not understand. Is it because most computer speakers have built in decoders? The scenario I am in is more of a use what I already have instead of just letting it sit around and age. Because of that I don't really want to buy another set of speakers. Do you think an external sound card would work instead?
  2. I just bought a new samsung LCD flat panel(http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-LN32A450-32-Inch-720p-HDTV/dp/B00141AYIC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1224629230&sr=1-1) and have a set of 5.1 speakers laying around which I havent really gotten a whole lot of use out of. I want to hook them up to my TV but I am having no luck with google. Both the TV and digital cable box have optical out and analog out and I was wondering if there are any suggested decoders out there I can use. I know creative has this(http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=4&subcategory=136&product=9468) but it seems like they are sold out everywhere and obviously not produced anymore. I have previously hooked the speakers up to a digital tube TV using RCA to 1/8in headphone jack and then three splitters but that straight connection caused horrible humming in the speakers. Could anyone suggest a good decoder box or other method for hooking my promedia up to my TV? Thanks, -Will
  3. Thank you all for your help. I just got my DVM and soldering stuff and should be getting my resistor tonight. The only reason I'm trying it myself is because its either that, or send it in to Klipsch to get it fixed for $50 flat. In the worst case scenario, I screw it up more. However, I'll be paying the same amount of money as if I didn't try anything. It's definitly worth a shot =P. Thanks again everyone, -Will
  4. Thanks again for the help. Just a few more Q's...How important is it to make sure the board is clean, other than asthetic purposes? And whats the consequence of putting in the wrong resistor? Not only are the colors really dull and therefore hard to read, but I'm half color blind so I'm not sure I read it correctly. Furthermore, how do I tell the watt rating on the resistor? I have no clue how to do that, and couldnt find it on google either. Thanks, -Will
  5. Thanks much for the help! This shouldn't be too hard, as I've soldered a few things before, just never on something that mattered =P...As for slight charring and being able to wipe it off, the charring is near an edge, and I can see where the entire width of the fiberglass is black...I have pictures, if that would be easier to explain? So, since it looks too severe to just wipe off, do you think this means the charring is so bad it has killed the board? Also, if radioshack doesnt have the resistor I need(which they probably wont), where can I order them from? I dont know of any electronic stores around here since its a small town, and was just wondering if theres any good place online you could order them from? Thanks much again, -Will
  6. Yea thats what I'm gonna try to do...However, I was just wondering if this is even feasble in an electrical engineering sense? I know little about curcuit boards, and was wondering if the green board itself is somewhat "charred" black around the resistor, will a new one even help since it seems as though the green base of the circuit board might be killed itself? I'm not sure how durable the silicon(?) is...Also I was wondering how I'd get the fried resistor out? Just melt the lead with a soldering iron and yank it out? Anyone know about this stuff? -Will
  7. I burned out my 4.1 sub, and I was wondering if anyone had a Klipsch 4.1 ProMedia Subwoofer to sell...I just need the sub, as the satellites work fine. Let me know, -Will
  8. I somehow burned out the circuitry on my 4.1 ProMedia subwoofer. Since its been really hard trying to find someone selling just the 4.1 sub, I was wondering what can I replace it with? I dont really want to buy an amp, and I dont have room for one, so I was wondering if there are any inexpesive yet nice sounding subs out there that have 4.1 hookup? Would it be smart/stupid to hook up the 4.1 satellites to say, a logitech 4.1 sub or the likes? Thanks, -Will
  9. Well, I recently got a pair of Klipsch 4.1's. I didnt buy them new, but they worked when I got them. However, there was some rattling going on in the sub box so I decide to investigate. When I do so, I unscrew a bunch of screws I should have and loosened up 3/4's of the large metal component houseing all the important circuit boards. When I couldnt get the case open because I was turning the wrong screws, I placed the sub back down on the floor. However, this made two things touch that should not have touched and bam, I fry a transistor on the circuit board. I realze this after I finally get the case open and take a look inside. I am fairly certain that is what happened, because no cables are loose and there is a noticble black mark around one resistor. I have pictures, but the forum attach picture option isnt working. If you want the pictures to make sure thats whats wrong just request them. The system will not power up at all now. They are not under warrenty, so I will try to fix them myself. Just wondering if there were any electricians or EE's in here who could tell me if I cut off the burnt out resistor and replace it with a new resistor of the same type, will the system work? Anyeone know how much klipsch charges for unwarrented repair, or anyone got a 4.1 sub for sale =P...Thanks for your help or insight, -Will.
