  1. well i just paid for the mint 902-8t's. $235 shipped. that's about the price it would've costed to have sfogg rebuild a pair for me, but with much less hassle.

thank you sfogg for inspiring me to try these out. can't wait till they arrive ;)

next step (long down the road) will be building a pair of ES networks when i decide to go two way (that's if bob's new tweeters aren't a better solution)

  2. sounds good.

would you mind telling me the exact model #'s of all the parts i need to have sent to you? i don't want to order the wrong thing.

i'm not sure how their ordering process works. they don't seem to have a shopping cart or anything set up. i assume i just e-mail them for a quote then send over the credit card info?

    thanks.

edit: for an adapter, i have the selenium ones that i drilled to use with the k-55 on my 511b's. those will work fine, correct? as for loading caps, what exactly is "loud?" i only have a 63 or so watt amp (mc250 rated at 50wpc, but supposedly works to around 63 just fine), but if i can't use them at enjoyable levels for the occasional movie without drastic crossover adjustments, i think i may have to wait on them [:(]

I might have missed something, but 902's bolt directly to the 511b. No adapter is needed.

Small format diaphragms from GPA are $119 each.

I hammer the 902's crossed at 400hz first order with no prob. However, the loading caps are still in place. What exactly is loud? That is what it is to each listener. I lost a K33 at just over 120db[:$] and the 902's were still there.

    Regards,

    Terry

ouch.. $120 for each diaphragm? that's getting a bit pricey. brings the cost to around $290 for the plates, diaphragms and rubbers. that's not too far off from their brand new price @ $400.

i'll inquire about the parts and see what happens. thanks for the help.

  4. Chris,

I don't have exact prices from Great Plains but in the ballpark I think

the diaphragms are about $85 each for the small format diaphragms. (I

bought large format diaphragms from them for $100 each) The back plates

are probably $10-$20 each (a larger format back plate was $19 I think)

and the screws and such are likely a couple of bucks. The rubber cover

for the magnet is I think about $5. Guestimates on the cost but those

are likely in the ballpark with a total cost around $200-$225.

In the end this would end up costing more then the pair of 902s I

already sold but with this setup you would have *new* diaphragms which

is a plus. Great Plains also sells new drivers too so that is always an

option. I think they are around $200 a piece new.

It is a crap shot on ebay with regards to the condition of the

diaphragms in used drivers. All the 902s I bought had great diaphragms

in them. But the 288s I bought on ebay (from the same seller) had

diaphragms whoes resistance measured fine but audibly the diaphragms

were not at all what they should have been. I ended up having to buy

new ones to get the drivers working properly.

As far as I know the Model 14s used basically 902s or whatever was the

current small format driver at the time. Since they were inside the

cabinet Altec didn't bother to put back plates or magnet rubber covers

on them which is why I don't have them. I actually ended up with these

as I bought the horns out of a Model 14 on ebay and they happened to

come with the driver bodies still attached without diaphragms in them.

(Random rambling) The Model 14 horns are kind of interesting... they

are Mantaray (CD) horns with asymetrical dispersion. Horizontal

dispersion is even left to right but vertically their dispersion is

much 'taller' above the horns then below them and I grabbed them for a

    possible future project.

    Shawn

    shawn,

$225 sounds good to me. i saw a good pair on ebay sell for about that much, but i didn't win. would you prefer me to paypal you a grand total or i order the parts then send them out to you?

i've been itching to try out 902's for a while, but the $400 pricetag was putting me off

  5. Tofu,

If you like it you buy the parts from Great Plains ( diaphragms, covers

and screws) and have them shipped them to me I'll put them back

together and send the completed units to you.

    Johhny,

OK, you got dibs on the tweeter.

    Shawn

shawn, that's quite an offer. how much do the parts go for? i don't see any prices listed on the site. if you want, i can paypal you the money for the drivers, labor, and parts.

so these basically are the same thing as the 902's?

    thanks.

    -chris

  6. BTW, for those looking for Altec drivers I have a pair of bodies (magnet assemblies) off a pair of Model 14s.

AFAIK these are basically 902s.... they are ferrite magnets and have the tangerine phase plugs like the 902s for example.

    No diaphragms in them.

Because these were in Model 14s there is also no back cover/terminals or the rubber boot around the magnet itself.

Minimally to get up and running they need diaphragms. Great Plains Audio sells Altec diaphragms or there are aftermarket options too for less cost. If desired Great Plains Audio also sells back covers and the magnent cover boots.

    $25 for the pair.

I also may have a single JBL 2404H if someone is looking for one.

    Thanks,

    Shawn

i'd take them if i had the slightest idea how to get them working [:P]

  7. http://www.benchmade.com/products/product_detail.aspx?model=710

i like the 710HS version. seems to be out of stock on most sites. i found it for $119 at "defenseamerica." shot the owner of the site an e-mail to see if he actually has it in stock (and also to make sure my order won't be sitting around for months due to an inactive site).

looks like it's completely legal and falls right in line with the "under 4" law." the blade shape seems to also be more versitile for everyday work compared to the tanto. although i must admit, the tanto looks cooler ;)

  8. Tofu, Speedball

If you're looking for autos shoot me a PM. I know a good place.

i gotta say ... my SOG flash, probably can't be told from an "auto"

the difference is, you "start" the opening, then the spring takes over

    and its LEGAL

duke, i need something that can hold a damn good edge and won't break at the hinge on me. to be honest i've never heard of SOG, but then again, i'm not really into knives.

benchmade's reputation and the whole free sharpening for life if you send them the knife (just pay shipping) is what caught my attention.

oh, and shade.. i sent ya a pm [;)]

  9. "i don't think they're going to bother me over a 5 inch folding knife."

    You think wrong!

The Sullivan law in NYC is the problem. Passed more than 100 years ago to prevent people from coming out to the polls and voting out the corrupt, they are still mis-used today.

    Recent cases include:

A woman defending herself with a rat-tailed comb.

A woman defending herself with an ashtray.

If you are stopped and searched for any reason, you will go to jail.

Essentially, it is against the law to defend yourself, and they can make it very hard for tradesmen with tools.

i can't catch a break. this isn't a defense knife although if the time arose that i ever needed to potentially kill an aggressor in order to save my own life or someone else's, i'd use it. i was looking at auto knives (yes, i know highly illegal, but i figured since i'm keeping it out of sight...may as well.), but they won't ship it to me without filling out a form agreeing that i'm an officer.

if i keep everything 100% legal, i suppose i'll go with the benchmade stryker 910 (3.7" black tanto blade and folding mechanism.)
