I have a pair of modified "original design" ALK Universals to sell... Original design meaning they have the 2.4 mH inductors, 40 uF and 7.2 uF values with Harmony bypass capacitors.. they also have Hovland Musicaps for 2.2uF values... Modified meaning all wire now is 14 awg silver plated copper teflon, I removed the cheap tin braid, the multi connect spaghetti crap hookups and replaced the Lynx resistor with a Mills... not shown in my pictures are (2) pairs of connectors to the autoformers... $300 shipped

[What do you use for switching amps/speakers?]

I built a switch box that allows (1) pair RCA In and (4) pairs RCA out... I keep (3) amps connected, a pair a various set, Mac 2105 and an Art Audio PX25 stereo tube amp...

I do have to change speaker wire at the XO and I use Goertz MI 3 for the 2105, Kimber 8TC for the PX25 and Goertz AG 2 for set amps... flip a toggle to change the output...

LED indicator for the switch powered by a 9v battery mounted inside.. cardas RCA's and solid silver wire.. bubinga box..

[Wax on]

I thought maybe the louder a person listened the higher the likihood they might notice a difference. Coils are prone to microphonic effects, both from noise and voltage - but probably not from the kind of voltages we normally use. Still the back section of a Klipshorn can get fairly loud.

Most use straight paraffin, bees wax seems like it might not have the same viscosity, but you were clearly displacing quite a bit of air.

I don't know about your car, but you should consider doing your guitars pickups - if you have any.

two reasons for the bees wax... 1) I already had it..  2) paraffin is petroleum based and dangerous around an open flame, even though I used a crock pot... bees wax is way more expensive though...

both the viscosity and melt temp of both are very close... 

with regard to potting guitar pickups I have read the best is a ration of paraffin and bees wax... and very important to pre heat the coil...

this idea started when I bought a pair of the wax impregnated 3670 autoformers from Dean... after installing they seems to add a positive benefit... and after some reading it seemed to me that there is indeed a benefit of eliminating any mechanical vibration or as much as possible...

 

so this holiday weekend I spent taking my crossovers apart and soaking all the inductors in wax.... got a crock pot with a low setting, put in 3lbs of bees wax and let it melt which took a couple hours... preheated the inductors at 125 prior (this is critical), removed 2 or 3 of the wire ties and let them soak in the crock pot one at a time until the tiny air bubbles stopped, which was 15-20 minutes on average... after removing from the crock pot and wiping down I immediately replaced all the wire ties... caution : hot hot hot.... let them dry for 24hrs before reassembly....

 

perhaps a total waste of time ?... but to me well worth the effort.... this is obviously subjective as I cannot or do not know if its even possible to measure anything related to this... but I am happy with the result...

I know what happened, he knows what happened. He used the program to adjust the values in the tweeter circuit after I sent him my schematic. You know, I really don't care, it's not important. What is important is that the both of you are running around loose without medication.

I wonder if Al remembers why he doesn't have to solder all of those leads to the autoformer anymore?

Hi Jim.... The benefits are its waaaaay better.... ha... seriously, though I am not familiar with the HRT to make a fair comparison... one obvious thing is the Cambridge has multiple "ins and outs" if that's needed.. my source was a mac mini to the dac and I had my Horus 2A3 and my Mac 2105 connected and all I had to do was switch speaker cables on my XO's .... I cannot speak to the technicalities and sound quality between the two units... I can say the Cambridge was excellent in my set up....  if anyone sees and has experience with either one perhaps they can add  their thoughts... thank you for the interest....
