  1. Ok, makes sense. I've got some cheap analog wires lying around somewhere but are there some that you guys would recommend?

That sounds like a can of worms for any forum. I'm not touching it.

If you are trying to test the difference in sound between the DAC and output sections of your player versus pre/pro then by all means, hook up some RCA cables and try it.

I prefer the sound from my player over my pre/pro but I keep both connections hooked up for the certain times when bass management becomes an issue (ie, if I want to annoy someone with the subwoofer [:P] or some deep bass from organ music that the mains just can't do).Yeah, I know. I just slapped myself upside the head.

  2. Do you guys have your tube cd players hooked up to the analog or digital outputs? Is one better than the other, or just a personal preference? And as far as a cdp that has HD decoding, every HDCD that I have played with my current cdp really didn't impress me, in fact they lacked bass considerably. It could just be the type of music but anyway whatever tube cdp I end up purchasing I don't think I'm gonna be concerned with HD decoding (or should I) ?

  3. Sounds fantastic! I bought mine used with the Underwood Level 1 mod that Carl mentions (Silver).

    Aaaahhhh ....

You Did listen to me , ...Once ...[;)]

................and you upgraded to the EH 12AX7 Gold Pin tube I'm assuming? (level 2 mod) I checked them out and they're only $17.95 a tube. If that improved sq than how can you go wrong buying the stock JD100 and getting the tubes yourself instead of the $300+ mod? Hmmm........Someone please step in and spend/save me some $$.
  4. Comparing the Jolida and the Ah, money aside, which is better? If the Ah has better sq would the Jolida with a tube upgrade win me over? Correct me if I'm wrong, seems like the Jolida is more attractive and built better but in the end sq must prevail.

Money aside - that's a good question. I guess that I'm biased (no pun intended), but my answer would be that there are a few of us in here that run modded Jolidas (mine is by Underwood - stage 1) and cannot imaging needing or wanting anything more. Then again, I've never heard an Ah! with an upsampler, so maybe I'm missing the cat's meow. I can just tell you that the modded JD100 is built like a tank and has all the top end that I'll ever need.

If memory serves, the only comments that I've read in here comparing the Ah!/upsampler to the Jolida were to the stock Jolida - and that's not really a fair fight. Then again, maybe someone will correct me.

Here's the underwood page - if you scroll down you'll see the level one and two mods for the Jolida JD100.

I've seen modded units go for far less on the pre-owned market.

    Good luck and happy hunting.

    Carl.

    Thanks for the site, Carl.
  5. Meagain, have you ever visited Saturday's Audio on Belmont? They have a Jolida, I'm gonna try to get down there this weekend to give it a listen. I've come across some "ok" deals there in the past on some amps. They also have my current Denon cd player as well so hopefully I can do some blind tests.

  7. smart question

i assume you are going direct to the power amp .??

my Jd-100 has no opamps in the output path ...[:)]

Well, I'm not really sure...........I thought I'd hook it up the same as my current cd player?????(to the reciever). The reason I'm considering this, if you remember I'm most likely gonna go with the JM Peach for a pre-amp. I've decided to use the Peach in a different room in the house just for two-channel listening. In my main room I use the system to watch a lot of concert dvd's so I don't really want to change the surround sound reciever. My cd player needs to be upgraded so that's why I'm looking into tube cd players for the music listening in that room. It would be used with RF-7's. Upgradeitis is a factor here but I'd really like to do better than the $200 Denon cd player that I have now.
  8. Another thing about the Peach besides the Home Theatre bypass.... (Not that I'm the Peach cheerleader or anything - it's just that I have it, know it, appreciate & like it).... And IDK about the other preamps you mentioned or if others do this , but the Peach is interesting in that it can essentially be 2 preamps in one. You have Hi-Z and Lo-Z mode. Hi-Z uses one of the 3 main tubes. Lo-Z uses 2, a pair. If you wanted, you could put one brand/feel of a tube in the Hi-Z slot, and 2 of another brand/feel in the 2 Low-Z slots. Switching between Hi & Lo-Z, you can attain 2 different vibes at your whim with the flick of a switch. Again, excuse my ignorance of other preamp designs cuz for all I know, many do that. I just think it's an interesting feature of the Peach.

And last I heard, he's working on a remote. I personally think that's a big deal.

He is and it's supposed to be out in the very near future. I'm probably gonna purchase one!!
