  1. I'm thinking of building a pair of speakers from scratch using the crites crossovers and I was wondering if there was a consensus regarding the aftermarket copies of Klipsch woofers. Are they good, close enough to the original or should I try to find original woofers? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Klipsch-K-1001-K-1005-KG4-2-KG4-5-KG5-2-10-Copy-Woofer-4-ohm-Speaker-MW-5010-4/160962690618?hash=item257a1fbe3a:g:m5QAAOSwRLZT9l6E
  2. Forgive my makeshift stack of stereo equipment. I'm going to make a proper rack as soon as I decide what I want. The other speakers are polk ls90s which are headed to the media room as soon as the ls50's there go somewhere else. 2 posts down.
  3. Thanks so much for all the replies, the receiver I have has a menu to enter to increase the bass and that's has made a difference for sure but I'm not discounting the suggested upgrades. I'm still so happy I have these speakers. I've been scanning craigslist and ebay for years to try to find an affordable pair near me. I paid $1000 dollars for them. The guy had them for thirty years and bought them brand new. Said he had dragged them everywhere with him and he actually teared up when we were making the transaction.
  4. I've wanted a set of la scalas for 30 years since I heard a set when I was a teen in a high end stereo store. While researching what I had bought, I ran across an audio forum where members were saying the la scalas were some of the worst sounding speakers ever made. I will say they seem to be lacking in bass a bit. I've read a little about modifications that can be made to them, replacing tweeters and the like. I do know that they are original in every way from the 80s. Although I've always wanted a pair, I'm lacking in experience. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
  5. I bought a pair of la scala midrange horns off of ebay. I do woodworking and the cabinets won't be a problem. I've been looking at the other components on Bob Crite's site and I'm trying to decide if I need to spend the extra cash on the AA as opposed to the A. Should I buy new tweeters from Crites or find some used ones on ebay? Thanks lee
  6. djk, lol, I think this may be beyond my skill level. I like it though. I take it that the oblong slots are for the midrange drivers? One driver for each pair of slots? lloydb
  7. The advice on here is priceless, thanks for all the input, I am enjoying considering the options. I've got a batch of pedulum clocks to get out, then I can start on my speakers. thanks so much. lee
  8. Gil, No, the depth can go to 24", no problem there at all.
  9. Ok, all this input is good. William, back to what you were saying.... I think what you were getting at is that I'm not going to have the deep bass. ( sorry guys, I don't understand the hertz stuff ) total newb. What if i built a sub to cover the lower tones and placed it below the horns I'm describing? My living room is probably about 400 square feet, but due the the back door and the fireplace and windows......Well, Im trying to build a pair that are really punchy but no wider than 16 inches each. BUT, I CAN go UP. So if they are 4 feet tall that is OK. Thanks John, for the tips on the tweeters and mids.
  10. Thanks man! It took me like a second to get there and 10 more to download. This helps tremendously. Saw some other cool stuff there I'm gonna investigate.
  11. Thanks TPG, You must have read my mind when you mentioned the subs. I was envisioning a sub system (maybe amplified) in it's own box built seamlessly below the "mini lascalas". Basically a lascala on top of a box. I did a search on the forums and found some of the plans you mentioned. However if I go ahead with this project, I'll have some questions regarding other driver selections and crossovers. I love woodworking and have the tools, so this could be a fun project for me. I've never owned a pair of lascalas, but I've been wanting a pair ever since my brother and I heard them in a hi-fi audio store when were teenagers.
  12. Has anyone tried this? I found an eminence driver that I think would work for this, the "delta 10". You know, just shave 1/3 off of the lascalas. Something like this would fit my living room much better. By the way, this is my 1st post. Thanks in advance.
