  1. Thought I might as well try a XRCD and judge for myself, so I bought the Sheffield Drum and Track Record on e-bay. It's a CD I know very well (love the drum tracks!!). Still interested in your thoughts though...
  2. Was wondering if XCRD CD's are worth the extra dollars. Can anybody comment on their sound quality compared to standard redbook? Seems there are now a number of "new" formats and recording techniques available. Should my next/additional player be capable of playing DVD-A, SACD, HDCD or all of the above??? (please don't recommend a turn table as I am still kicking myself for parting with my LP collection and turntable 10 years ago)
  3. Technics SB-F1 Still in use in my second system, and Maganat Monitor B's Still on the attic. Yes indeed, the Klipsch were a huge step up!!
  4. I found the placement of my RF-35s relative to the walls and my listening position to be a more effective way of tone control. Took me a few months to get the right balance between stereo image and bass response, whilst still keeping the wife happy[] I haven't used the tone controls since. Just generally happy with the way it sounds. Afterthought: The more I frequent this board the more I feel the urge to tweek and/or upgrade despite the fact that I'm happy with my current system set-up and can spend many hours listening without fatigue. I suppose in audio and hifi the saying "ignorance is bliss" really counts.....
  5. Ough, was following an auction for a M-508 amp and a P-308 pre on e-bay: went for $1825 and $455 respectively [:'(] Thought they could be had for about half of that price. For that amount of money there must be plenty of very good alternatives out there. It didn't even mention if the amp was recapped... Hmmm, time to revisit and rethink.
  6. Would I be *better* off changing from my 16 to 12 gauge speaker wire? Why is 12 gauge the optimum? Just wondering...
  7. Anybody experience with onkyo 80s/90s seperates (like M504/506/508) and matching them with klipsch reference series? I always fancied these onkyo seperates back in the days but could never afford them. Nowadays they pop up regularly on ebay and audiogon for reasenable prices. Any thoughts?
  8. I bi- wired my RF 35s and I could tell the (positive) difference. Had some pro sound 16 AWG speaker wire and, like JPM, just gave it a try. I think it worked for my set up. Couldn't agree more about the importance of speaker placement as both sound quality as stereo imaging varies significantly with placement.
  9. Hi, Still looking at upgrading my amp without spending a fortune. Looking for feedback on the the Marantz PM94 (88-91 model, 25W class A, 140W class and the PM17MkII (01-04 model, 60W 2 Ch). Any experiences out here with one of these. On the used market they both can be had for $500-700 and both are credited with a "warm and sweet" sound. On paper it looks like a good match for my Rf35s. Any comments/thoughts on this one? Thanks
  10. This is a really interesting thread, but I think it can be of even more value if performer/orchestra and/or record label recommandations are added, based on performance or recording quality. I am currently replacing some of my classical CDs I bought years ago for "better" recordings as the Klipsch revealed the shortcomings in those recordings. Just recommending Holst-the planets is probably not enough for somebody new to classical music. I personally would recommend André Previn, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra - Holst, The Planets (Telarc), based on the excellent sound quality, great dynamics and sound performance. I am very interested in similarly detailed recommendations by others out here, since I am certainly not an expert on classical music - but eager to explore!
  11. Seller wil allow local pick up. Just checked.
  12. Here are some music pieces that I have re-discovered once switching to Klipsch: Sanford and Son Theme - Harry James (Still Harry after all these years), Great placement of instruments, fabulous soundquality by Sheffield Lab Keep Your Eye on the Sparrow - Dave Grusin (Discovered again), a classic IMHO The Battle - Lisa Gerard (The Gladiator soundtrack), very powerfull! City under the desert - Kodo/Tomita(Nasca Fantasy), Japan meets Peru. Pady lament - Sinead O'Connor (Sean-Nos Nua), excellent vocals! Also sprach Zarathustra - Strauss (Fritz Reiner, Chicago Symphony), marvelous recording, though rivaled by the Andre Previn - Wiener Philharmoniker recording (TELARC) Suite Sister Mary - Queensryche (Operation Mindcrime) Hard to pick a favorite song from this great album Fantasia suite -Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, and Paco de Lucia (Friday Night in San Francisco), great live recording of some of the world's best guitar players. Since buying my Klipsch I have spent so much more time listening to music and really enjoying it. The only negative: These speakers will painfully expose any poorly recorded albums....
  13. Thanks everybody for the replies. I think it's time for me to visit a good dealer and get some "at home" testing arranged. Should be fun!
  14. Hi, I have had my Klipsch RF-35s for just over a year now and am very happy with their performance. I'm contemplating to replace my marantz receiver CD player combo for a NAD integrated amp and DVD/CD player. I am mainly listening music, but like to be able to play de HDCD format and DVDs as wel. Particulary interested in the S300 integrated and the S570 DVD player, but the C372 and T562 is also on my short list. Anybody out here has hands on experience with the Klipsch NAD combo? Before testing anything at home I'd like to piggyback on the fast knowledge out in this forum.
