  1. May be an option is things heat up -- wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be...
  2. I ended up moving some equipment out of the rack, and giving the onkyo some room to breathe. Things are running well and I am worry free.... until the temp crack 100 in texas soon...
  3. Not all racks have fans... right? So, if my rack has fans... then I would think that would be sufficient to keep the gear cool enough. If it doesn't, then why add the fans in the first place? I'll see how warm it gets...
  4. This sucks... then why do people even have racks!
  5. This will be the first time I am using a rack, and all my slots will be filled. Therefore, the onkyo will have another equipment piece directly above it. The pieces will have shelves, but the gap between the shelves is only half an inch. From top to bottom, I'll have furman unit, then a DTV receiver, the onkyo, then an apple tv and a PS3 on the same shelf, then the UPA7, then the sub amp. The rack will be closed (with holes for the wires etc at the bottom) with two fans running to pull the heat out. However, these fans run loud -- thus I was trying to figure out how to not have hot equipment and what to do with the fans. Are the fans enough? Seems like a rack would be designed for this purpose and would be able to handle this.
  6. How do I know if my equipment is running too hot?
  7. Based on recommendations from forum members... I picked up the Furman Elite 20pfi. Can't say anything on performance (as it's been sitting in the box for several weeks now). However, the value to add to the post was that in my mind... it seemed logical to invest in this type of equipment as it should last "forever". The manual states that there is nothing in the unit that really degrades over time. If it provides cleaner current that will help other equipment (amps, etc) last longer... then it seems reasonable for this reason as well.
  8. Anyone else have and Omnimount rack system? I just got the RE18 and like the rack factor... however the fans are super noisy. They are powerful and draw some air, yet they are loud! Anyone have advice on how to quiet the noise? I have the rack in a closet, and can hear the fans significantly with the door shut -- it would disrupt tv watching, etc. Surely Omnimount knew the media equipment would need to be somewhat quiet when designing...
  9. Another question on the Onkyo (and maybe other processors) -- why is the unit still ~7 or 8" in height if they don't have the large amp section built in like a receiver? Seems like they would be slimmer...
  10. Do I need to plug an ethernet cable into a processor? Is this only for upgrades, or for other functions as well?
  11. Congrats, I think you are going to love it. Don't be afraid to play around and experiment with settings and tweaks to find the sound you like best. I spent a while finding what really worked well for me and learning to make the most of Audyessy and other settings, the end result sounds extremely nice. I'd be happy to share some of the tricks I have found. Thanks for the offer...
  12. If I decide to hide, will the Harmon 900 remote with IR sensor work for the entire rack? Does each component need it own IR sensor?
  13. I grabbed the 885... thanks for the advice. Figured I couldn't go wrong and this will buy me some years at an affordable price (wanted to upgrade to HDMI before I rewired my rack).
  14. How many people prefer to have their equipment (specifically AVR or Processor) in full view, versus hidden? Mine has been hidden in a rack, but thinking about moving out for visibility. Wanting to get opinions before planning cables, etc.

How do you know where to install them? Assuming it matters where they are installed in the room.
  16. I checked out the item at Audiogon. I'm just not sure about getting a used unit from 2007 when I can get a new UMC1 with warranty and $400 savings card for only a $200 savings. I like that it did have the THX 2 certification.
  17. Do you think Emotiva will have a closeout sale on the UMC once the XMC is released? I haven't been following the company long enough to know how they operate. I picked up the UPA7 and probably won't have any need for the XMC versus the UMC (since UPA doesn't have XLR).
  18. I am interested to hear more suggestions...
  19. Looks like all the UPA7 excitement has left the boards -- had to find this thread on page 2! Wanted to follow up and say that I really like having the amp. This is my first amp (so can't compare), but there is a noticeable difference in the sound. It's fun...
  20. I was being serious. The original post made it sound like there was an external device that was added to the setup. I figured that the crossover was knob that you could turn on the AVR (like on my sub amp). This seems like the same thing as setting your regular speakers to "small" if you have subs hooked up. Everyone seems to say keep the sub setting at 80.
  21. What is a crossover? Is it built into the AVR / Pro?
  22. I did the UPA7 and like it, however after never having an amp before... I can only tell the difference when watching movies and turning up the volume. Is this how it is supposed to be?
  23. @ rich guy I did get the snake and it works fine. I ended up getting an 8 or 10 foot cable since I may keep the controlling end (AVR/Pro) in the room while everything else is enclosed in a rack in the closet. The guys at audioprola were super cool and responsive (especially with a one cable order). The trigger works well also. I saw in the UPA manual that some audiophile cables work in "one way". Do I need to worry about which way the signal is carried?
  24. I just hooked up my new UPA7 and was impressed. Using previous Pioneer Elite vsx 54 as a preamp, but all speakers hooked to the amp. I now know what yall have been talking about when you say "headroom". I would have said "calm" but I think "warm" is also an expression. My "calm" would be "less pingy" sound and more "wholistic". Secondly, I freaking realized that my bass was set at "no sound"! Imagine have two THX Ultra 2 subs and not having them rumble... then hearing the UPA7 and the subs come online at the same time. My morning has been nice... Before I get jumped on for not knowing about the subs -- I kept hearing them in the system setups and assumed they were connected -- just couldn't find out why there was no performance. This may make you laugh (or cringe), but they have been set to "no sound" for 5 years!!!! Ha! My wife kept telling me that they "didn't sound the same as we heard in the store".!!!! Ha! now I am laughing myself...
