  1. Is there an expected date for the XMC? Seems like it keeps getting pushed out. Maybe there will be a closeout sale on the UMC in a few months...
  2. How does the Emotiva compare to the likes of a Rotel processor (or something along those lines)? Is a Rotel in a different class? Do we just like the Emotiva becasue of the pricepoint? Why doesn;t the rest of the world jump at the Emotiva if it is that great at such a great price? Trying to put things in perspective...

I talked to them today and they said that the RCAs are less expensive, but the 3.5mm is a little more so that that price will balance out to what is on the site. I like the idea of the snake -- clean.

No, not the "Neutrik 1/4" TRS" that would not work, you would want "Neutrik Gold RCA" which would be the standard RCA type connector. Also yes 3.5mm and 1/8" RCA are both the same thing. Ha! Yes -- I learned the difference between the TRS and RCA today...
  5. There is a thread on this subject titled "amp cables".

    Amp Cables

Is a 1/8" cable the same thing as a 3.5mm cable? The math conversion works... just wanting to make sure. ProAudio says 3.5m, while Blue Jean Cable say 1/8".

So... I just say that I want the 8-Channel Premium Snake w/ Mogami & Neutrik Gold 1/4" TRS and then replace the 8th channel with the Neutrik NYS226BG 3.5mm Mono Male Cable Connector - Black/Gold one both ends. Correct?

    Amp Cables

Rich Guy -- I asked ProAudio to make a 8 channel snake with 7 channels of RCA connections and 1 cable of 3.5m. They responded asking "if this was a standard Tascam pinout unit". Also, they said the 3.5m is usually used for a stero unbalanced configuration (and that I would need 2 channels for this). They mentioned that they usually cater to the pro studio market and that they are not that versed in the personal home theater market. Please tell me specifically how to respond so that I get the right set up -- I don't really know what to ask for....
  9. Congratulations. How did you decide to order the UMC versus waiting for the next version? I am in the same situation...

FYI -- I contacted the pro audio people today to see if I can get the 3.5mm power cable added to the 8th channel.

Slight jam regarding connections. I would use RCA with my AVR, and UMC (if I go that route), but could use XLR (one one end) if I wait for the XMC. Seems like one wouldn't get the benefit of XLR if the receiver was XLR and the amp was only RCA, right? Probably will go ahead and get RCA connectors on both ends.
  12. That 1 topic can spawn thousands of threads! To start with, no, components are not the same. It's like rubber tires. They all do about the same thing but, try to put a Kia tire on a Ferrari and see what happens! A resistor is a resistor. But you can buy a bag of 1k ohm resistors for a couple bucks or you can buy good ones for a couple bucks each. Then theres the actual circuit boards and wiring. Everything has a low and high end. Now add in the actual internal design and it get easier to understand the disserences. Research is your best bet here. Keep in mind that there are some darn good sounding receivers. You do have to pay for the quality. Dedicated processors have to stand on their own. They must deliver superiority at their price point or they will be torn to sheds by the various reviewers and quickly disappear.Great receivers have to deliver to market and price point. That's why Onkyo has different product lines. Market share is important and to get that share they have to produce a lower end product. If you have a chance to audition a low/high end receiver from the same manufacturer, do it. For the majority of the buyers out there, 1 box, plug and play capability is all that matters. They have been listening to TV speakers and the move to a receiver is quantum. Sound quality isn't as high of a priority than hearing a BluRay in surround for the first time. They usually purchase lower end gear and it does just what they want it to. I can tell you from experience that my Sony receiver sounded OK when I purchased it. I researched for 2 years before I was convinced that a pre/pro was the way to go. It took less than a minute to hear the difference between it and my old Sony receiver. I suppose for the total cost of my pre/pro and just ordered amp, I could have found a receiver that was pretty good. The $1300 units out there have a great reputation. I'll never know since I don't think I'll have a chance to compare them to what I have. I'm ok with that. My new amp should last 10+ years and when the technology changes, I will be able to upgrade the pre/pro separately and not have to spend the money to get another amp section too. I think it would be like buying a new house to get a higher efficiency furnace. Some will and do just that. Thanks for taking the time to reply in a easy to understand matter. Odd that the more knowledge I gain, the more money I spend! At least it is saved on not buying movie tickets!
  13. Why is a processor better sounding than a receiver? I understand why an amp would be different from receiver generated power, but aren't the processor components the same?
  14. Just to clarify. I don't have an Emotiva credit now. My wording meant that if I get the UMC now, then I would have 40% off for the XMC. However I would rather pay the full price for the XMC and then be able to use the 40% off on the next generation or whenever I need to update. So, I know that I have reasonably priced upgrades for several years. However, now that I think about it... it may be wiser to jump in the UMC at a "low" price and then use the 40% off whenever needed. Instead, of waiting and limiting upgrades to one company in the far off future (not even knowing the company will be there or still offering the discount). Anyone want to use their 40% off now and ship to me? Will split savings...
  15. I jumped on the UPA-7 closeout... now I need to decide if I combine it with my current AVR (pioneer elite non-hdmi), grab the UMC-1, or wait to see the specs on the XMC version (whenever that comes out). I can be patient... but also would like to have matching components (and maybe find an alternative use for the AVR). Best solution would be for the upcoming XMC to come out relatively soon and then jump on that and save the 40% upgrade for later. Would like to not waste the 40% discount on the UMC-1 at this stage. Thoughts?
  16. Why don't you have yours placed right next to each other (if the bass is better that way)?

What is the recommended cable length? As short as possible?
  18. How do you know how much power you need? I asked in another forum if Klipsch offered "recommendations" on pairings. etc. Ultra THX II go great with 200 watts, etc. If I run the THX Ultra IIs... how much power do I need? AVR 110 power, AVR 140 power, UPA 125 power, Sunfire 250 power?

I saw that you have the Emotiva amp. I was thinking about the UPA-7. The picture of the UPA-7 looks like RCA... right? Is your X series the other connection?

    Amp Cables

The cable you pictured has a different type of connection. I looked at the website but would need an RCA type connection. They look cool. Now deciding whether I should keep the blue jean brand to keep consistent with my other cables or try something else. Seems that I could go with a 2 foot cable to keep everything clean in the back, but most seem to go with longer lengths. Need to decide on my placement.

    Amp Cables

Odd that if I only need 7 cables, that the "snake" offerings only have a 8 channel and not a 7 channel.

    Amp Cables

So... to connect 7 speakers to the amp... all I need is the 7 channel set up... right? I feel dumb typing this, but just wanting to be sure -- maybe I'll just call them tomorrow. The part I don't get is that the subs don't plug into the amp.... so why are they even mentioning the .1 channel? The subs plug directly into the pro or AVR... right?

Per Blue Jean Cables website: [select the length you need, and any applicable options, below, hit the "calculate" button, and the price will appear to the right. To purchase, click "Add to Cart." PLEASE NOTE: the ".1" channel in a surround system is a full-fledged, albeit restricted bandwidth, channel; accordingly, if you need to carry all the channels for 5.1 audio, for example, that requires a six-channel, not a five-channel, cable set. If you'd like to view a list of the prices for these cables in a variety of sample lengths, see our five, six, seven or eight channel price tables.] For a 7.2 system -- I order the 7 channel set up... right? Not the 8 channel. The part about a 5.1 requiring 6 channels is confusing me. Looking at the BJC LC-1 MultiChannel Audio Channels. EDIT -- I need to plug the 7 speakers into the amp, the subs will run off their own amp.
  24. Can dual subs be placed in the center of the room -- pointing towards the seating -- right by the center channel? It doesn't seem too realistic to crawl around the room looking for bass -- since the subs cables are so large and think -- would be hard to hide in the wall... right? I think I am just going to move them on one side of the room.
  25. Above you say -- move the subs around. Does this mean that I need to get then together somehow? Meaning they need to either be side by side or on top of each other, but NOT on opposite sides of the room? I can do this rather easily. Ok subwoofer placement 101. If you co-locate the subs (place them close to each other or on top of each other) you'll get more output than if they were separated. Good for large rooms. In addition. you can find the best placement option by placing the sub in your normal listening (seating) position, play some bass heavy music, and crawl around the perimiter of the room to find the spot that has the best sounding (loudest) bass and place the sub(s) there. You can use an SPL meter to assist. Please communicate this to my wife!
