  1. Could I get a JM Blueberry Ext II owner to take pictures of their case? Measurements would be very helpful if possible. I could get my brother to make a case for me if I had some extra information to go off of.

    Thanks guys/gals

edit - another piece of info that would be of great help, how does the pre attach to the wood case? My Marantz wood case connects through the feet of the unit, is this how the Blueberry attaches as well?

Here's the measurements from my Xtreme II case. 20 1/4" L x 11" H x 7 1/4" D. I can post some pics tonight after work. The case is held on through the feet like your Marantz.

  2. people using it on this forum with the heritage lineup will tell you that these mitsu amps are SLEEPERS .

thats what i got as a comment from em. but never got to understand what did that mean .

heck , anyways ....now you tell me whats a sleeper amp. and how does this gear sound in your setting ??????

When someone says a piece of audio equipment is a sleeper, he means it's generally thought of as a better quality piece, but one that's not talked about a lot therefore does not sell for a lot of money because people don't know a lot about it. At least that's what I've always thought it meant. Like this Mitsubishi amp is not that well known but it very well constructed, performs very well, looks great and doesn't sell for a huge amount of money. Since I sold my VRD-ST45, I've been using mine with my Blueberry Extreme II and Klipschorns and it sounds great.

  3. I would open the woofer compartment and change the caps.Correct me if I'm wrong Al but you need to open the woofer compartment either way to isolate the woofer with a regular AP12, Universal or ES400.You can also change a couple parts in the AK2 and make it an AK3.

I didn't want to alter the original crossovers so I replaced the entire hatch and installed new speaker terminals for the woofer.

Personally I would just get the AP12/ES5800 combo and be done.

That's exactly what I did. I spoke with Al today and placed an order for the AP12-350 and ES5800 combo to replace the Universals.

  4. Al,

I'm getting it now. It's all starting to make some sense finally. Thanks for being so helpful and so patient. One last question though. Besides the cost difference,

what are the big differences between the ES400 with the ES5800 and the AP12-350 with the ES5800 since they're both designed for the Khorns?

  5. Al,

I'm pretty slow when it comes to understanding how crossovers work and how to read schematics and graphs and it's taken me a couple of reads to feel that I think I understand what it is I need to do if and when I decide to upgrade again.

The way I understand it is, since I have the AK2, if I get the AP12-AK3, I still use what's already inside the woofer hatch and add the AP12-AK3 to it? I have to change the two 70 Uf caps to 50 Uf caps first though? What type and brand do you recommend?

I also use the 5800 or I can use the Universal for now using the bi-amp input and follow the directions mentioned earlier?

Am I close or is my A D D really showing itself tonight? [*-)]

  6. J..

The Universal will replace the AK-2 but I generally suggest the AP12-350 and ES5800 set to upgrade that network. The AK-2 and AK-3 networks both have extreme-slope tweeter filters already in them. The AK-4 and AK-5 do NOT. The Universal has a 18 dB / octave tweeter filter. The Universal has other advantage over the AK-2 or AK-3 but the AP12-350 and ES5800 set give you all those and a correct extreme-slope tweeter filter too.

Dean is correct that the woofer filter of the AK-2 is inside the woofer hatch. The AK-3 is set up the same way. You need to open the hatch and use the cable going to the upper half of the AK-3 to run directly to the woofer driver. The cable from the amp will be moved directly to the new networks input terminals. The old input posts on the woofer hatch are no longer used. This is the case with the Universal as well.

    Al K.

    Al,

I already have your Universals in my 87 Khorns replacing the AK-2 crossovers. I completely replaced the entire woofer hatch keeping the original woofer section of the crossover intact.

From where I'm at now, would you recommend adding to the Universal, one of your extreme slope Woofer Squawker networks or going the route mentioned above using the AP12-350 and replacing everything?

I'm using your Trachorns with K55M and the Crites tweeter BTW.

  7. After my last really cool find, I stumbled across a gentleman that had a pair of Klipschorns covered up in the corners, sheets covering them were very dusty, like they had been on them for years, maybe?

I had met a gentleman regarding a stereo receiver that I was interested in buying, Denon AVR-5800. He was in his late 60's and said he traveled alot with his fifthwheel spending alot of time in Arizona and flying to florida. He said he decided to sell the receiver as he rarely had used it and didn't want it to get stolen. I loved the receiver, it was minty new, and in talking I asked what he had hidden in the corners under the sheets, hoping they were large speakers. He said they were Klipsch speakers. I asked if he was going to sell them. He told me that if I wanted a package deal, he would sell me the receiver and the klipsch speakers for $1000 (the receiver was being sold to me for $500, which was a stellar deal). I noticed the sheets were covered in dust and must have been covered for some time. I uncovered them and there sat a most beautiful pair of Klipschorns, They were the newer model that has the top that looks separate from the bottom, I took him up on the package deal.

Now I have 3 Klipschorns and an Electro-voice Patrician IV. I am almost done with the Patrician, finishing it to look like the Klipschorn that it came with, in Baltic Birch and new speaker fabric from Wendalls Fabrics for the Klipschorn and the Patrician IV, looks nice. Will post photos soon. One in every corner of my 35'x25' theater room.

I would love to see your Patrician IV. I also have one that I've made to look like a large Klipschorn. I just wish I have proper rooms for all these speakers.

  8. Bernie, I'm still loving my LS. I can't imagine ever getting rid of them. Even the fiancee knows I won't get rid of them when we marry. What more could a guy want...? Wink (Don't answer that...)

    Bruce

Hi Bruce! Those were nice La Scalas. They were my second pair. I'd still have them if I didn't come across the Khorns. I've been following some of your posts and have kept up with them as they've been growing up.[:D]

  9. Hi Craig,

My BBX came from Mark with the EH gold pin but I switched to the DR super tube because of what I had read about it. I can't honestly say I heard a difference. I can say that it didn't hurt the sound. I've read that the DR versions from the late 1970s are the better ones to look for but that's just what I've heard, I'm not endorsing them over other versions.

    Bernie

Bernie what vintage is your DR?

    How's my baby doing??

    Craig,

Your baby's doing just fine and giving me a lot of enjoyment. Best purchase I've made in audio gear so far with no regrets. Still running it with the Penta KT88SC's and using some 1958 RCA black plate 12ax7s and 12au7s I got from a Lowrey organ.

My DR had a date of 1978 in purple ink on it.

  11. I just got my new Blueberry Xtreme II from Mark the other day and am using it with a Mitsubishi SS amp until I pick up my VRD ST45 from Craig this weekend at AKFest, but all I can say is WOW! I never thought my Khorns could sound this good. I've been using a Stingray for the past year and I thought that was about as good as it would get, but I was wrong. Thank you Mark for making such a perfect product!

  12. The last BBX I put up on Audiogon recently sold in about an hour or so. If I would have had 6, I could have sold all 6 I am pretty sure. Anyway, that's the status of things. Oh, and there is some possibility of a new pCAT which would feature the same electronics, but a new chassis and mechanicals. That's iffy though.

    Cheers!

I'm the lucky dog that bought the last BBX. Right place, at the right time I guess. It was delivered today and it sounds wonderful. It will be paired with a VRD ST45 which I'm picking up this weekend at AKFest from Craig. So far, I'm loving it! [:D]

  13. For under $500 you can get a Mitsubishi power amp and pre-amp that are real sleepers. Not very popular and not spoken about much but very highy regarded, and great looking too! The DA-A10DC 100wpc or the DA-A15DC 150wpc, along with the DA-P20 or DA-P10 pre-amp. Wonderful to listen to.
