  1. I have done a lot but I have never done that! Should have got out the marshmallows, hotdogs, cold beer and let her burn! How cool would that have been??? Here's a toast to Def Leper, the only guy I know to ever torch a speaker and live to talk about it! YOU RULE MAN!!!
  2. Thanks for the insightful information gentleman. It sounds like more science than sound. I have heard the term "port noise" before and don't know if I would know it if I heard it. The Chorus I's have large ports so I "***-u-me" there should be more noise from them? During casual listening however, I can't detect any anomalous sounds that draw attention to themselves. Maybe it's the 35 years of playing music or maybe it's not as prevalent in my speakers, or maybe, it's not there? In any case, I guess my point is the low end seems to be tighter and more coherent with the Chorus' than with the other speakers I mentioned. Oh, hey Doc, do the cones of the woofer and passive move in unison or is it a push/pull action? I have always been curious about that. Mark
  3. I was curious how many speaker companies, besides Klipsch and JBL, have used or still use passive radiators? The concept, to me anyway, seems rather complicated and unnecessary. I have had three speakers with radiators, Forte' I's and II's along with JBL L-222 Disco's. I had the same issues with all three, PLACEMENT. No matter how or what I tried, I just couldn't put any of them in the right place for decent bass response. The JBL's were a bit easier maybe due to the passive being in the front of the cabinet and the 14" woofer thumps pretty good. I could never get either Forte right. The K-stacks I put in the II's helped a lot and seem to work great for the new owner but not for me. Must be a combination of the room, passives??? I just got a pair of Chorus I's, ported in the front, BOOM, BASS! May be an unfair due to the 15" woofers but it semms they sound good no matter where I put them. Anyone done an A/B with Chorus I's and II's. I would be curious on the results. Mark
  4. Sorry for the false alarm on the NoCal Corns, he pulled the ad. He must have sold them as that was a good price.
  5. Welcome to the forum! I believe the retail price for the new Cornwalls is $3500 american. If you are lucky, you can find nice used Corns on ebay or Audiogon from about $600 to $1000. I would also check out the Chorus and Chorus II. Not as big a cabinet but virtually the same drivers and, in my experience, very comparable to the Corns. I currently have Chorus I's which sound awesome! I have owned Cornwall II's in the past which are also fantastic! Don't think you could go wrong with either. If you are in Northern Cailifornia, there are a pair of Cronwalls for $650 BIN on ebay. I know the guy selling them, his name is Greg, and he's a good guy. I will say I haven't spoken to him in quite a while and have no other affiliation other than I have purchased things from him in the past. Mark
  6. Like the Phoenix, he rises from the ashes, renewed! OK, so that's very corny! It is good to have you back. It's not the same forum without you! Cheers, Mark
  7. Thanks Jim, I missed that thread. Good to see Mike back but sounds like he's in a funk! Been there, done that! I'll have to shoot him a PM with some words of encouragement! There is life beyond audio, I hope!
  8. I haven't been cruising the site too much lately but I have found an ominous void. Where is Michael "colterphoto1" Colter??? Is he OK? Has he been swallowed by his collection of Klipsch speakers? Has he been taken away by some other nefarious forum? Has he gone to the "Dark Side," aka Bose?? Please, someone, let me know what has happened to him!
  9. Hi, If you are looking to downsize, I may be able to work out a trade. If you are interested, my e-mail address is; Lbones295@cs.com Mark
  10. My acoustic memory is pretty short, but as I recall, the Corns had a bit better low bass and upper treble. I also had a different amp then, an NAD 218, which drove them pretty well. For now, I am using a Yamaha 100 watt RX-777 stereo receiver which is actually a pretty impressive piece of gear. Just sold my Anthem tube integrated to maintain our marital bliss. Now I'm looking for a SS integrated that is easy to use, with remote. I am in no hurry as the Chorus' sound damn good with the Yammy!
  11. I hate to pick on my wife and I'm sure she was kidding when she said that? Although, she was the one who said she hated her lawn mower because it was so hard to push. You guessed it, it was a self propelled mower and she didn't know you had to push the lever to engage the front wheels. I still wouldn't trade her for the world! Anyone that can put up with me this long is VERY special, or crazy?
  12. Hey Steamer, I just looked at your profile, HOLY CRAP, two Bag End 18" subs??? Have you checked the nails on the outside of your house? I'll bet you will have to pound them back in! How big is your listening room if you don't mind me asking? I may try some room treatments but I am pretty happy with it as is. It is our main living room so I can't do much or I will be doing treatments in "the dog house", if you know what I mean. I was just lucky enough to find a pair of oak Chorus' that match our furniture. The good thing is, I had Cornwalls when we first met so she is happy they are not too big. Glad I had my Heresy's in my bedroom. The first thing she asked was why I had the washer and dryer in the living room? I should have known then it would be an up hill battle.
  13. My Dad use to drag race and would always tell me, "there is no substitute for cubic inches." Of course he was talking about engine displacement but it seems to hold true for woofers also. This is nothing new but I just want to share some casual observations. I had a pair of Forte II's with k-stacks, spiked cabinets etc. They are a great speaker but, I was never impressed with the low end response. After moving them around and putting them in different locations, which are limited in my room, I just couldn't get it right. I ended up selling them and wanting a pair of Cornwalls again but they are just too big. As luck would have it, I found a pair of Chorus I's locally in very nice condition. I put them in the normal position and, WOW, BASS. I don't know if it's the 15's, front ports, no passive radiator, bigger cabinet or all the above, but now I am a happy guy! I am having to chase down rattles in the living room that just didn't happen with the Forte's. Using cone spikes helped a lot also. My wife even likes them as they are in oak and match our entertainment center. For me, the Chorus I is my new favorite and have a "permanent" place in my home? I guess the old man was right, but I won't tell him that! Mark
  14. I would place the Belle's/LS in the top ten of my favorites. In the proper room, I feel you can't beat a K-horn. In my room, I had better luck with my old Cornwalls as far as placement and overall sound. In a big room, I like the LS. I think certainly the Belle's are one of the nicest looking speaker that Klipsch, or anyone for that matter, ever made. A beautiful speaker that sounds awesome, pretty good combination![]
  15. http://www.craigslist.org/eby/ele/130225945.html I came accross this ad on craigslist, San Francisco area, and was shocked! Who would do such a thing to one of the finest speakers ever made? The only good news would be if you could get them dirt cheap and fix them, if they could be fixed. I know you could part them out but I feel that would be also be criminal!
  16. http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrfull&1143140339 Some member should bag these! They appear to be version 1's and in great condition. The seller told me they have the heavier gauge wire and deeper ports. AWESOME SPEAKER! I seriously considered them but found some Chorus' for a price I couldn't refuse, that and he is in Minnesota and I'm in California. Don't trust many shipping companies with a 110 lb speaker! He also has some CR-3's but I think they are later models. If you are in the upper mid-west I would run, don't walk, to get them![] Mark
  17. Amy posted a picture of one in black on the General Questions page. They will also be in Walnut and Cherry finish. What ever happened to oak??? Maybe I'm getting old.
  18. Having a pair of Forte II's I have a few thoughts. Quality of the sound depends a lot on your other components and room. I found the Forte II to be very forgiving with less expensive amplification but very sensitive to placement. This was true of the II's in their stock form. Me, being a "tweak," I couldn't leave them stock. I upgraded the crossovers with K-stacks from Chris Munson, popbumper. I also put in titanium tweeter diaphragms from Bob Crites, BEC. These modifications made a huge difference. It did cost me over $400 however. The Forte II gives you a real world size speaker with great sound at a great price. I feel you can't go wrong! I am selling mine only because I found some Cornwall II's that I have to buy! I am sure that when I do this, I will kick myself for not keeping the Forte II's. This hobby can be more like a disease. Good luck, Mark
  19. Hey, Thanks for the heads up but those Forte II's are in PA, I live in Northern California. I do have some interest in them locally.
  20. I have a single K-25-K 12" woofer for sale. It is in great condition. $100 plus shipping to any forum member. Thanks, Mark
  21. http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?spkrfull&1142454214 I just posted my Forte II's and Anthem Integrated 1 on Audiogon. Thanks!!
  22. I forgot to mention that the woofers are K-23-K's out of a pair of Forte' I's. Virtually identical in look and sound to the K-25's. I do have a "spare" K-25-K I would include with the speakers.
  23. Hey Merkin, That may be a little far. How about half way, say, Colorado? Just kidding! Cheers, Mark
  24. I would take $750 for the Forte's, the crossovers were over $300, and $450 for the Anthem, $1,100.00 for both. I will try and post pictures when I get home from work.
  25. I may be selling my modified Forte II's with the Munson K-stack crossovers, titanium tweeter diaphragms. They are in oak oil with one minor veneer mark on a rear corner. I have the original boxes but really don't want to ship them. I live in Northern Ca. and can travel some. I may also part with my Anthem Integrated 1 all tube amp. I have the stock tubes plus JJ Tesla power tubes and modern Mullard pre-amp tubes. I would make someone a killer deal on both. You can send me a PM or my e-mail is Lbones295@cs.com. Thanks, Mark
