  1. Christy,

In the grocery store, how do you determine the sex of the artichokes? I'd like to try your recipe.

No "sexing" required. If you buy the artichokes in a can thier hearts have been ripped out![:^)] And...everyone knows all bleeding hearts look alike.

  2. I just wanted to let everyone know that another forum member will be visiting with us tonight. Groomlakearea51 and his family are spending the night in Picayune on their way home from visiting their family in Little Rock.

I hope Groomlake was able to meet with other forum members while in Little Rock.

We will be serving the traditional New Year's Day Dinner, Baked Chisesi Ham (a New Orleans favorite), Smothered Cabbage, Black Eyed Peas and Rice along with hot dogs for Groomlake's young son!!!

We are looking forward to meeting him and his family...I guess we better be on our best behavior as Groomlake is in the Law Enforcement field. We wouldn't want to give him a bad impression of the "dtel gang".

  3. Christy, there should be a sign at your door that reads:

" Caution- occupancy by not LESS

than 20 persons is not allowed! "

So Colter, what do you think about the countertops????

Michael, you know we love visitors. A few of our neighbors/friends from twenty five years ago came to be with us for New Year's Eve. I greeted them outside and said, "Our house is different than most houses." My friend looked at me and said, "Do you think we give a sh*t?" I replied, "If I thought you gave a sh*t I would not have invited you." And we all started laughing and giving those famous Southern hugs and kisses.

Needless to say our old friends were very surprised upon entering our home and realizing dtel and I built everything ourselves, from the slab up.

I am so glad people feel comfortable when they come to our home, that is what it's all about.

BTW, if I recall correctly you really enjoyed that "large family atmosphere" on your visit down here. If not, you did a good job of pretending,.[;)]

  4. Happy New Year to everyone from the dtel gang. I have to say our New Year's Eve gathering was very special. We had old friends (neighbors) from twenty five years ago in attendance, as well as new friends (neighbors) from the past ten years in attendance. Quite a time of reflection.

Unbelievably, everyone we invited showed up. It was nice to be surrounded by good friends, all in attendance were either neighbors or family. Some of our guests(old neighbors) drove over an hour to be with us.

After talking and visiting and our old friends(neighbors) meeting our new friends(neighbors), it was obvious common threads bind us all together in some way.

We cranked up the Forte II surround system for everyone and played concert DVD's most of the night, along with dtel's bonfire, an awesome fireworks display and some really good food, which is always a tradition in the South. Eric Clapton and The Eagles, as well as Standing in the Shadows of Motown (music only) stole the music stage. Of course, everyone was in awe of the Forte II system.

Along with the music, we enjoyed Seafood Gumbo w/rice, Artichoke Balls, Deviled Eggs, Crab Dip, Veggie Tray, Crawfish Cornbread Dressing, Sausage and Cheese Biscuit Balls, Cupcakes, Cheesecake with Chocolate Chips, Chips and Dip and an assortment of beverages, including Pina Coladas.

BTW, Colter, Happy New Year and we really missed you last night.

  5. As you can see we did not use "bullnose edging". I really want a wood edge, probably made from locally milled cypress trees. This would match the cabinets dtel built when we remodeled the kitchen.

About six months ago we almost had granite countertops installed. I am sure some, if not most of you will think I am insane, but I really don't think I would have been as satisfied with the granite. The Italian Porcelain suits the design of our home and our lifestyle perfectly.

The corner presented a challenge because the countertops and cabinets were custom built and the dimensions are a little different than standard cabinets.

BTW, oscarear your kitchen is beautiful. We have stucco above our stove vent, not mixed with hay and it can be difficult to maintain. I could not imagine having hay mixed in, that has to be a PITB.

These pics were taken in a hurry last night, right before thirty people arrived to celebrate New Years! We will try to get some more soon.

  6. Sounds very nice! You won't have to seal porcelain tiles at all. The grout needs it, though. I've had great luck with AquaMix products, especially Sealers Choice Gold.

Fini, are you serious!!! The sealer was my only other concern. I love the muted appearance of the "Italian Porcelain". I was afraid I would have some "glossy looking" sealer and I did not want that.

This stuff is awesome. It is called Leonardo???? All the writing on the box is in Italian.

So...I only need to seal the grout, correct Fini?

  7. One of the things I really like about "Italian Porcelain" is the color is consistent throughout the tile. I.E. if it chips you don't notice it because the entire thickness of the tile is colored. The texture on the tile adds to the ability to handle chips without noticing. This makes the tile truly "functional", which we desperately need in this house.

We accidentally dropped a couple of the the 6 X 6 tiles on the cement floor and it did not break or chip!!! We actually dropped two or three tiles during the tiling process and no breaks or chips.

I need to find out what kind of sealer to use, if any???

I have dropped Corel dinnerware on cement and it shatters into a thousand small pieces.

  8. "Given how he BLEW past me on the highwayout of Hope (and I think I had like a 30 minute head start on him, cruising at like 80 mph), I hope that doesn't imply that you are even worse??!!" [6][:D][6] (Not only do IB and I enjoy slammin'[au]but.......)

I'm sure Seti will attest to the fact the Kaiser has two driving modes, he's either stopped or is doing his best to keep the needle as far to the right as possible[:o]

Terry, you say the part about you and the missus hanging out in the back went right by you[8-)] LOL (Not screwin' around on the road[:P])

"Which way did he go Doc"[^o)]

I DO NOT want to be on the same highway at the same time with you guys. Please give us a detailed description of your travel route so we may avoid you guys on the highways at all costs.[;)] We will be sure to catch up with you once we arrive SAFELY in Indy.[au]

  9. We were computerless for a few days,,,,,

Dtel had been asking for a few weeks what I wanted for my birthday, which was Christmas Day.[<:o)][^] I really couldn't think of anything I wanted.

A neighbor friend, who installs tile flooring, countertops, etc. came over Christmas Eve to show us some tile he had left over from a previous job. The tile was beautiful. Very muted colors, with a textured surface. I have to admit that I know very little about tile, but this stuff is gorgeous. The colors match our house perfectly. The colors are somewhat "sage green" and "bone", with light smoke grout.

After a few minutes I looked at dtel and said, "I know what you can give me for my birthday".

The neighbor friend then said, "Look, I am not going to charge you for any of this, I just need you (dtel) to drive my dumptruck for a few hours if the neighbor down the street accepts our bid." (The neighbor friend also owns a trackhoe and dumptruck, which he uses for small jobs)

These countertops were long anticipated as the renovation of our kitchen took place two years ago. We couldn't decide what kind of countertops we wanted, let alone what colors we wanted.

As it turns out, the tile is "Italian Porcelain". The neighbor did a custom pattern on the counter and our island bar. The tiles are 12 x 12 sage green and bone and 6 x 6 sage green and bone, with "light smoke" grout. The pattern incorporates "picture framing and diagonal design". It is awesome. Hopefully, we can get some pics in a few days.

As I stated earlier these tiles were left over from a previous job. According to our neighbor these tiles and grout were selected by an interior designer for the previous house. It's obvious when you see these tiles with this grout.

The tile portion is now complete, we still have to decide on the "trim" and what or if to seal the tiles. This is the only part of construction on our home that dtel and I did not do ourselves.

Anyway, I am so glad I picked these countertops for my birthday present. It's probably one of the nicest birthday presents ever.[G] I could not have asked for a better match for our house.

  10. Marvel,

As always, your posts about Barbara move me to tears, not bad tears. Tears of joy for you and the kids. Your enduring faith has kept you strong and your family ties even stronger.

The gift of the rose at Barbara's funeral says it all. Barbara was thought of miles and miles away from the funeral. We never know when God will answer our cry, but like has already been said, "He never gives us more than we can bear."

This Christmas season and always we wish you and yours the very best.

    Christy and Elden

  11. mdeneen - You're spot on about Diana Krall.

dtel's wife - Joan Osborne is amazing in Standing in the Shadows of Motown, the story of The Funk Brothers. I'd never seen nor heard her before seeing that documentary on DVD. I recommend it to one and all.

This is way OT, but, since I'm offering unsolicited testimonials about DVDs, check out The World's Fastest Indian with Anthony Hopkins as Burt Munro. My lovely wife initially thought she wanted no part of a movie about a motorcycle, now it's one of her favorites.

I had never heard of her before either, but dtel and I were both impressed with her vocals. She is really really good and hardly even strains! Emotional, without whining, I like that. BTW, we had consider purchasing some of her other music, but weren't sure if we would like it or not.

Even for non-Motown fans Standing in the Shadows of Motown is an excellent buy. Although, how someone could not like Motown is beyond me. Even Colter thought the music was great. Not bad for a rock and roll fan.

  12. How about Joan Osbuorne? She is one of the female vocalists on Standing In the Shadows of Motown. On the CD/DVD she sings "(Love is like a) Heat Wave" and "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted". She is truly amazing on "Brokenhearted".

  13. Nice pix Ray, btw, a good starting point for dragging the shutter for Christmas lights is 1 second.

No decor for me this year. The N.O. trip was over the weekends when decorating would normally take place. Besides I'm not expecting any holiday company. Why bother?

I think it was Michael that said, "enjoy your holidays. Just leave me out of them." That is a tough request for people that really care about him, like all 21 of us dtels.[:(]

Christmas is always special at the dtel house, especially since my birthday is Christmas Day!!![<:o)][^][G]

Michael, I promise not to think about you on Christmas Day![*-)]

  14. I considered starting this thread when we arrived home from our cruise. I am glad I waited a few days to begin.

I would like this thread to serve as an avenue for any and all forum members that would like to extend a thank you to others. If your thank you is just for someone being supportive in your time of need or to thank your wife/husband for that super duper Christmas present, please feel free to "hi-jack" the thread. Being thankful for the smallest things, make the bigger things all the more special.

I will start... I would like to thank Elden for showing me what love really is.

I would like to thank all of the forum members and their family members for being such good friends.

I would like to thank my family for loving me, even when I probably didn't deserve their love.

I would like to thank my in laws for being the family I never had.

I would like to thank Klipsch and Associates for giving us a place to share our knowledge, love and friendships.

I would like to thank Colterphoto for sharing himself with us for a week, allowing us to get know him and being the friend he has been since the day we joined this forum. I would also like to thank him for sharing his photography skills with us.

I would like to thank arfandbark for the generous gift, the HK930 reciever. He wouldn't even accept repayment of the shipping charges

I would like to thank Amy for allowing us to be ourselves with as little interference as possible, while maintaining civility when we forget to be civil. I would also like to thank Amy for being a good friend. I am proud to say I know people like Amy.

I would like to thank Daddy Dee for the encouragement and advice he has given so many of us freely and lovingly. I would be proud to be a member of your congregation Dee.

I would like to thank (Rick) Audio Flynn for making another family's Christmas as special as it can be in trying times. Rick, your kindness and generosity shows the true meaning of Christmas.

I would also like to thank Fini and his family for being the special folks they are. His wife and kids are the greatest, just like him. Fini, thanks for making me laugh even when I don't feel like laughing sometimes.

Picky and Verna, thank you for making the Pilgramage so enjoyable.

These thank yous are not in any special order, just written as they came to mind.

I know there are many other thanks that I probably forgot, but this is an open thread and I will post those thanks as they come to me.

Please feel free to post your thanks to others.

  15. I am extremely grateful to Elden. He spent a lot of time convincing me to snorkel, even though he knew how fearful I was. He stood by patiently and waited for me to overcome the fears and then he showed me a world that I had only seen photographs. The opporunity to view the underwater world was "life changing". Thank you.

True love spoken from a wife....

That would be UNCLE Elden. But kind words for a very gentle and loving guy (I know you try to act tough, it's not you)

Excuse me Michael. You need to slow down a little when you read our posts.

I am the one Elden convinced to go snorkeling. Indy's assessment of my statement was very accurate.

Elden's patience in our "snorkeling adventure" opened a new world for me, in more ways than one. The level of fear Elden helped me to overcome in snorkeling reinforced my trust in him as my life long friend and husband. In addition, the sights of the underwater world gave me a new appreciation for taking time to see the beautiful things in everyday life.

Besides, I have accepted your igoring me in favor of the younger crowd.
