  1. Quick question. I unscrewed the bass bin door but it seems pretty stuck on there. I see a bit of almost what might be a black gasket? I don't want to hurt anything. Should I gently try to pry it off? I'd love to see what's inside but don't want to ruin anything. The wires obviously connect to this door and I assume more wires are on the inside of it. Advice?
  2. I thought in the Chrysler Vans, the seats only folded into the floor in the Town & Country and 'maybe' the Grand Caravan? I'm having a problem with understanding how any of them will work with the seat issue. I have a short Town & Country and had to remove all the seats. It was still very packed. The tops of the Khorns come off though which helps. I didn't know that till we got to the sellers house. It was a relief! You're going to have to find out what year they are, etc. Hopefully you can find the van that has the dissappearing seats & still offer enough height inside. I saw a post where someone had a Sienna & posted pics of how they fit inside, etc. I think it was fairly recent?
  3. The A-gon khorns are very close to my SN's. 3 pairs made between mine and those. Interesting. A shame they got so beat up. Looks like a pretty significant scrape.
  4. Jeff! Very very helpful. Bravo & thanks! I'll print that out. Bigger - thanks. It was suggested to me to check a couple weeks ago when we got them, but given that these are 3,000 pounds each on on thickish carpet - etc. Well, I fully blame my husband for not opening the bass bin door, etc. I told him to, but he poo-poo'd the concept saying he hooked it up right. Just assuming the parts he didn't need to touch were perfect and he also said we'd definiately hear a problem immediately. I'm understanding that it might not necessarily be 'in your face' if it's off. I tell ya - I'll sure have egg on my face if this wire thing turns out amiss.
  5. bigger - I hope he understands what you are talking about with this polarity stuff (visually), cuz I sure don't. I know I asked him if he hooked them up right and he said 'yea - red goes to red' (or something like that). Strabo - cool chart. Wish I understood it better.
  6. I'll take some pics of our x-overs & the wireing before putting in Ricks. I've yet to open this bass bin door, etc. I couldn't find diagrams/pictures to compare to to see if things are right. Dean - What do you think of that Behringer DEQ for my situation?
  7. LOL Heresy's? I again assume this is a joke. Maybe I should revert back to my KG4's then & continue listening for a "couple years". At least they have some bass! Or maybe I could buy those cute little cube speakers everyone here raves about. []Pauln posted a condensed pdf chart the first page about 7 posts down. Not sure if this helps, but it's a visual.
  8. The floor is wall to wall plush thick carpet. 13' beyond speaker wall, it's hard. Ceiling is 8' high with beams every 3.5-4'. Wall between speaks is basically a window area temporarily covered with strech plastic (bad windows) overwhich is a thin gauzey curtain. Side walls: one a brick wall with pictures & ledges. Other has a 8-9'? bank of window very high on the wall (starting at 5'3"?) Plastic also but not covered with curtain/shades. Furniture is on this wall (chest, etc). Sofa faces speakers abut 9-10' away. Walls are lightly textured like a plaster trowel effect. TV (embarrasingly) is temporarily in front of curtained window on speaker wall (husband requirement). It's butt ugly! TV used to be in the corner where a khorn is now. It won't be acceptable come spring. I bought them without hearing them prior. Had to jump on them & I don't regret it but we've been agonizing on how to rearrange things and keep scratching our heads. Moving the TV to the side wall would be a rough change. No view from kitchen, etc. Maybe we'll try it out this weekend. Then the speakers would be about 14' wide.
  9. Only one dimension of the future room is known: 28'. The dimension is arbitrary and likely will be dictated by whatever's best for the khorns. I'll be all over those workmen to get those corners straight. []. The rope caulk trick is on my long list for a try down the road. It sounds removeable. If not, I may not try. Going to try to get hubby to come home early. Going to do some listening now in different parts of the room (esp the sweet spot) so I have a good reference for the x-over swap.
  10. That's what I'm thinking. Otherwise... $$$$$$$ and still might be unhappy. Dean - I saw a thread you started on the Behringer deq back in June/July or so? Given you have experience with this and given my room is defective... do you think it might offer me improvements? At least compensate for my room? I'm just seeing this as a fairly inexpensive practical purchase that can be used in various future settings, etc. After I listen to the recapped crossovers of course. But to me, no matter what I do, I'll have room issues. Even if I have a $10k amp. Right? It'll help make things more pristine even in a pretty good room, etc?
  11. Ricktate - The lack of being able to use a remote or program my pronto for volume control might be a deal breaker for me. EDIT: Yes, I'm going to redo the test w/the new xovers. Should I post the numbers? Dean, the khorns are sealed in the corners with pipe insulation. They are shoved in tight. The 1" MDF wall extends at least 3.5' maybe 4' beyond the edge of the khorn. Yea, I know we are sitting too far back. About 9-10' from the wall? Think there will be a vast difference to our ears if we temporarily move the sofa where we sit? Vast? See - this is why we were going to buy that Behringer deq 2496. To be able to compensate a bit for the room. Despite it being a bandaid. I'll sit in the sweet spot for a good listen today.
  12. Thanks. Yes, the right speaker has a 1" thick MDF wall (which we since lengthened another 2'). I had a bit of a problem accepting the need for a serious level wall with studs, insulation, etc. Quite frankly, this bad room we're in doesn't have walls that nice. The MDF is wedged in solid and can't be moved by hand. Braced from behind by the fireplace ledges. The foam on the tail board is snug against it. IDK - Maybe some pading between the ledges & MDF is in order. I've seen pics here of others creating falls walls that lack true studs/insulation so I went with that. The MDF is not screwed into the khorn. Didn't want to ruin them. Anyway, it's the right speaker. Don't know if the specs reflect this issue or not. We'll physically switch the 2 speaks as soon as hubby gets home then retest. I can't wait to put these x-overs in. I sure hope I get better results than Jeff. At least something perceivable. At least we have 2 listeners here.
  13. LOL!Timmy - if you get a chance, can you post a picture? Congrats BTW!
  14. I'd bet money that Jeff runs a blog. Jeff - Am I right? Since the thread is now all over the place (from the getgo)... I might as well toss in a newbie type question.... It's been suggested many times a pre-amp would be a good thing. Apparently my receiver ports allow for this. 1) If the pre-amp is hooked to my HK receiver, and assuming my HK is cr*p... wouldn't any good stuff from a tube pre-amp be negated by the HK? 2) If I have a tube pre, can I still use the HK remote for volume? Yes - right?
  15. Correct! I realize the test isn't pristine. It's for comparing. If the tools are faulty, then it will be faulty for each speaker and when manually switching the speakers. It's a baseline and I thought it would be ok to use it to compare apples to apples - despite maybe being rotten with worms. The Mic is still in the exact place & won't be touched for the next test (physically switching the speaks). Same volume, etc.
  16. Colin - are the differences 'over the top'? Abnormal? Mark suggested switching the speakers & redoing the test. That'll be easy and we'll likely do that tonight for kicks.
  17. Hi Dean 1981 Khorns with AA's Harman Kardon AVR 435 (65 wpc w/peak of 85. Various dig/analog ports to chose from & able to do pure 2 channel if desired). Room size: (bad) Khorns are on 11.5-12' wall & we're sitting a bit back from what "I" think is the sweet spot. Music type: All except country & we have no blues here that I can find. Tendancy towards harder music with complicated musicianship/time signatures, etc. Good things: Bass. Deep & punchy. I've no complaints. Problems: Some highs can be harsh (cymbal crashes). Sometimes sibilance(sp) issues but I think that's mostly the particular recordings. Some almost 'hall-like' tone, not so much an echo, but more a detached atmosphere - airey (maybe lack of warmth?) that seems disconnected somehow. Perhaps something missing in the middle or a 'gap' between bass & highs? Perhaps bass 'too too' sometimes overwhelming. A semi-imbalance. But I'm not smart enough to translate that into Hz or frequency ranges, etc. to better explain. I'm a bass lover and these are the first speakers I've dealt with that I didn't have the bass tone control up a notch or 2. This is good. I guess my first order of biz is to chill out the harsh parts which seem detached & often jump out too much. Tonight we're going to try 3dzapper's recapped x-overs in BOTH speaks. I plan to give them a good listen as long as he's not in urgent need for their return. We did the spectrum analyzer to try to get a baseline as to where we are right now. It made sense to me & still does. I posted it to see if the knowledgeable people here can see any major problems to the speakers themselves before I went from there. For all I know - something mechanical was off. These are the only khorns we've heard so we had nothing to compare to. And it didn't cost us anything. I'm not overthinking this. I have problems with what I hear right now and know they can sound much better. We plan to remodel and intend to size the room with the khorns in mind. Until then, I realize my room s*cks and I'm thinking that Behringer EQ that's been talked about here can help balance things out & accommodate my situation for the interim. Though I'm thinking even with a new room, this EQ can still help cuz it likely will never be perfect. I'll be happy-ish if someone tells me the numbers above do not show defects in a given horn, etc. and are just a result of my room. I can then cross that off my list. So Dean, do the numbers above look appalling to you or are they just in the normally semi-bad category and merely an effect of the room?
  18. Jeff - (besides eating several pages of my khorn thread with your amp stance)... What you and apparently others fail to read is that I AM having problems with the sound of these things. In an effort to extract better sound out of them, we thought we should test them. This starting point with the analyzer seems alot more sane than dumping thousands of dollars into various amps. THAT makes no sense to 'me'. I'm done. I'm buying an EQ to fix any room issues and will talk to 3dzapper when I change the xovers & others who have kindly emailed me privately. Now - I give this thread up for you all to talk about taxes. Should I change the title of the thread for you? []
  19. I read Max's post and thought it was funny. But at 1:15 am after playing around with a spectrum analyzer - I girl's just gotta SNAP sometimes. []
  20. Just responding to some pretty strong jabs. So if my methods are so flawed - what methods should I use to nail down perceived flaws? I'll just play with the crossovers which may or may not be perceptable, then send them back and live with what I have. Though if I'm going to have speakers that are off and not as perfect as possible, I might as well go with something more petite.
  21. Uh - Ben.... You're welcome to ignore both this thread & my posts if you wish. Also easy peasy. FWIW - I'm trying to find a way to translate to myself what I hear lacking to my ears. I do not plan to purchase $10k worth of amps or build a new room at this time. I'm first trying to figure out where the problems are technically speaking so I can go from there. Mostly merely compareing the 2 speakers to each other. I think that's a reasonable thing to do. Or maybe I should have ignored the differences and just tossed a new crossover in 1 speaker and compared them. Which I feel would be even more ridiculous. I plan to get a real EQ with an appropriate mic so perhaps I should delete the thread till I get that? Pauln - Thanks for doing that chart.
  22. Hmm... I assume the vertical column is db? I didn't have any numbers going into the 30's that I can see. So what does that represent then? Oops - I see a couple of 32's.
  23. Yea, I put it into Excel also but can't post it. The Microphone was a Studio Projects B1? It's a directional Mic and positioned behind the invisible 'x'. Where we're sitting. But equal to each. I believe the software is at the top of the numbers in the header. At this point, I'm more concerned about the differences between the 2 speaks. I'm trying to get a baseline here. Trying to get the best out of these things. Yes, I have some issues with the sound. Done on analog. I have a 2-speaker at the same time version too.
  24. Um - Maybe I should try screen shots! The above was done with white noise from Avia disc. Trying to attach specs of the mic but can't. Oh well. Anyway, unless I had an EQ to even this all out, I can't see being able to a/b these between the 2 speakers. I think we're going to get the EQ. But does anyone see anything grossly wrong here? Something overtly bad that would be resulting from a bad something or other in a given speaker?
  25. Before playing with 3dzapper's/Rick's crossovers (especially by a/b'ing, we wanted to check the differences between our left & right khorns. Could anyone decipher this for me?
