Where do you buy your tubes,I have been looking on eBay and the sellers are from China and I am a little hesitant to buy from outside US,quality issues and custom fees are my concern.

vivatubescom  I purchased two Psvane12au7 from them . They are located in USA.

  2. If you have ever thought about converting your Cornwalls to Cornscallas here is ever thing you need . It's easy, and if you decide its not for you (which you want ) you can return to the stock Cornwalls with no damage . The larger 2" mid range horn made a huge improvement , & I have loved my stock Cornwalls for 10 years . The ONLY reason I am not keeping them is I have gone to the Oris Horn . All parts from Bob Crites , here is my invoice  list of components included .

Pair of our new CT120 Tweeters $225.00

Pair of Selenium D405 midrange drivers $348.00

    Pair of M2380 horns $170.00

Pair of midrange horn/driver support brackets and pair of 2 inch gaskets $24.00

Pair of CSS500/5000 Cornscala Crossovers $250.00

    I paid $817.00 in October -18 . Yours for $600.00 + shipping

  3. I was lucky and had a good experience received in 6 days and what I ordered .

Was yours shipped from Mainland China or from Hong Kong ? I have since found a American distributor for Psvane Tubes that even gives you A 30 DAY warranty . Next  Time I will use them,, it's just a gamble with those China deals .

     Good luck,

  4. Thanks Maynard for reminding us Triode & Set are 2 different things . I should have used "and"  rather then the - I love Triode AND SET design Amp's .

For my ears I agree with Kevin there is no comparison .  .

    Yes, it has been fun.

The bad thing about this hobby is you don't know what you're missing until you hear a change for the better then it's obvious.

But after all these years I am moving away from what could be better to just enjoying  music because I know there always could be better no matter what I do. Might be getting older also ?

Words of true wisdom there Mr Dtel, I could not agree more - a mirror of me as well .

  6. In the process of dialing in all the right setup needed for the new to me - Oris 150 horns this week   I was reminded of why I love Triode - SET design Amp's .

After-many trials of changing toe  in and bass low filter pass adjustments , input levels etc. I still did not find the sound tolerable . Especially Female voices - harsh - unpleasant .

I was using a new Latino ST120 with all the upgrades and was impressed with it's performance driving the  Cornscallas that I have been using .

The 200 hz  + low pass setting helped , but it was still so unpleasant I was about ready to turn it off , when I remembered that my amp has a Triode & linear switch. With the Cornscallas I had always preferred the linear setting. So when I flipped the switch I was shocked at the difference,  the music got sweet or at least listenable . Wow what a difference, still have some issues but the Oris hold promise . What a difference design selection plays, in finding our favorite tone and presentation . Just my flavor ,others rightly so prefer SS or other designs .

    I love SET Triode

  7. Shu,  Dennis Had started building me a pair of Triode mono blocks couple weeks ago . In our several emails I asked about coupling caps in his "Sweet Little Pre " 98 ( as he calls it ) . He replied he does not know how these forum stories get started because all the SLP98's were Direct coupled .

Yet It seems to me that that must be an option though to have coupling caps etc. the Mundorfs & Jensens are offered by Cary as up grades in sets of4 . I Will send another E message to Cary asking for explanation unless Kevin or someone else here knows the answer .   ???

  8. I just received this reply from Cary re: Upgrade question .

    Joe,

According to the records this unit was here and had the following upgrades installed. We cannot validate any changes made to the unit after it leaves Cary Audio. The previous customer may have taken the unit to a local repair shop and had more work done or made changes that would reverse what upgrades were installed when we had it.

    MR Clarity caps

    2

    MR Clarity caps

    Upgrade

    Lundahl Transformer

    1

    20:1 gain

    Upgrade

    Hexfreds

    4

    High speed low noise rectifiers

    Upgrade

    Steve

That Lundahl Transformer that allows the use of MC cartridges in the phono stage is another $500.00 upgrade . I dont have any experience with the MR Clarity caps, but someone on this site does & will hopefully comment .

  9. Yes Kevin this is one of the 3 pre-amps I purchased this month , "chasing the sound ". The 98 is quieter then a church mouse, I can not hear any hisss or any type of noise with ear to mid range horn . The sound quality was excellent very similar too the one I kept, just a matter of my ears - room and my taste .

Looking at the Cary site I thought the F1 would have all of the listed upgrades - But upon more investigation it appears some or optional . I will try to contact Cary today, hopefully with serial # they can provide the details .  Or maybe Kevin can tell us more about the F1 , he has spent a lot of time with his .

Mundorf MCap SUPREME EVO SilverGold Capacitors or Jensen Copper Foil/Paper-in-Oil/Pure Silver Lead-Out Capacitors

    HEXFRED RECTIFIERS

    KIMBER KABLE

SLP-98 PHONO STAGEPrice: $500.00 (includes parts and labor)

  10. I cant find a mar on the unit nor the remote, but Ill call it 8 out of 10 in cosmetics . Works flawlessly . Great phono stage with both MC and MM  & if you want to bi-amp it has two outputs .  Output tubes 6sn7 are Tung-sol selected by Cary . The F1 has all those glorious upgrades listed in thread below from Cary .

If you have been shopping Pre amps you know the 98's reputation  so I want brag on it further . $2400.00

Contact me for more photos, my files are to large , happy to speak with you on any questions .

the reason for getting a quality (more expensive) DAC would be to extract more info from your disks. No preamp can make more information come out of your DAC. A better volume control system, one which does less to the information given to it by the source will let you hear more clearly what was extracted from your disk. The idea of a passive is that it does less so it has less opportunity to mess up the sound. Better DAC's mean better digital cables and you may well find that you have exceeded your available budget. I think that most folks simply want to do the most with what they have (available budget). I have had extremly good results with entry level DVD players which can be purchased off the floor for $15 -20 bucks or new for $25.00 - $40.00. Every couple of years they throw a little new technology at the DVD to keep it fresh and I simply buy a new one. I do modify mine and no I am not sharing what I do. Stock DVD players from Sony and Toshiba are now 24 bit 196KHz sample rate and make very good sounding CD players for next to nothing. Buy one at Walmart if you do not like it take it back. Cost you nothing to try but your time. I am running a Toshiba right now because it has track ID on the player but I actually prefer the new Sony and it has a better/nicer remote and is the same price. Best regards Moray James.

Moray do those dvd players have volume control on the remote , and enough output voltage to go straight to your amp ? If so it would save me a lot of money on the purchase of a new Oppo .My 980H is getting long in tooth . Is there some other advantage to the Oppo's ? Have loved my Oppo but big buck compared to the Sony .

Jut picked up my FIII's and have spent a few hours trying to get them dialed in. They are 7 feet apart center to center, 19.5" from front wall, and slightly toed in so axis would be just behind listening position. I started with them about six feet apart and axis crossing just in front of listening position. Pulling them apart that foot and reducing the toe in created a much larger sound stage. Working on getting the bass evened out now as best I can and a few other variables.
