  1. coincidence...

i just watched "Twister" with my girflfriend yesterday...

the dolby digital version though. I wish I had access to the dts one, it wouldn't be wasted on this film, seeing as the bass already shook me pretty well in dd 5.1...

sometimes i wonder why dts doesn't push more to have more action movies mixed in dts as opposed to films like "Family Man" and "American Beauty"...

I watched Final Fantasy recently, and I REALLY hope they release it in dts, with all the highs there are...

somewhat annoying, but not as much as the fact that they don't release movies both in widescreen and standard ratios anymore... oops, off on a tangent again!

  2. a speaker is the box that transforms an ANALOG electrical signal into acoustic energy. what you are talking about are digital speaker systems, which include, apart from the analog amp and speakers, a decoder that takes the digital signal out of your soundcard and decodes it into an analog signal which it feeds to the amp.

so the signal is always going to end up being analog to the amp and speakers. it's a good thing, because us humans can only hear analog signals...

  3. all speakers are analog!

the reason why speakers without the included digital decoder (what you mean by "analog" speakers) have more of a tendency to hiss than their "digital" counterparts is due to the soundcards being of relatively poor quality compared with the digital decoders included in the "digital speaker" packages, and also because of the wrong settings a lot of people use in their soundcard settings.

i have the promedia v2.400 (earlier version of the 4.1) and i have no hissing with my sb live!. a matter of settings!

  4. you get more bass when setting the xover at 80 because more signal is sent to your sub, which is going to put out more than your speakers even at 80hz, probably.

but more does not mean better in this case because I'M pretty sure the sb3 will reproduce a cleaner 80hz signal than the sub. therefore, 60 or 70 would be better, imo.

    or svs.

the reason you could hear where it came fromso easily is that it was poorly set up, i.e. the xover was set too high, and the sub was reproducing higher frequencies that should have gone to the mains.

there is no such thing as a sub putting out too much.

    :-)

  6. I knew Sony made very good electronics in their ES line, but speakers?? Wow!

We don't need above 20khz. Under, yes, because with a good sub, you can feel those freqs. But above? Useful for marketing hype and dogs, maybe also to make sure the audible high frequencies are more easily reproduced, or as was said earlier, to shift the hissing to the highest freqs (don't see how it would be done though?)...

  7. i would really like to see the specs on the sony speakers they claim can reproduce the full sacd spectrum...

sony speakers generally aren't held in high regard by conoisseurs... or by anyone into audio, really.

    what a joke!

oh, and your forte II's... how much?

    i second that totally.

  9. correct me if i'm wrong, but it looks like dvd-a is taking the conventional and rather logical approach of boosting both the sampling rate and the resolution, whereas sacd is using a considerably higher sampling rate, but reducing the resolution to only register the variations between one sample and the next.

i haven't heard either but i've read more often that the sacd had an overall more analog-like quality than dvd-a.

both are using a dvd or dvd-like storage layer, but sacd's also include a normal cd layer readable in any cd player, making the format more backwards compatilbe than dvd-audio. bass management seems to be more of an issue with dvd-audio too.

  10. what if i just want to add a good powerful sub to my existing system?

    nothing hifi, just powerful.

the system is a run-of-the-mill one on my subaru outback sport (can't remember the brand), so it's cheap and doesn't sound good but i'd like to have a big ol' sub to complement the killer looks of the car.

so i'd need the sub plus the box plus the amplification.

how much am i looking at? i'm in quebec and don't really want to run to exotic car audio dealers to get what i need. i just need some BASS because the system as is is very much bass-shy.

  11. drewster, i'll have to disagree on this one.

deftech speakers might go low, but I don't think they'll match (both in sound quality and low-end extension) a good pair of Klipsch mains with a good sub, which would probably end up costing the same. unless you like the bipolar sound a lot.

i firmly believe it'smore complicated to deal with placement issues and stanbding waves problems due to two subs placed in the ideal speaker locations (which most of the time isn't the same as the ideal subwoofer or bass locations) than dealingwith the placement and proper xover of one sub. a thread is going on talking aboutjust those multiple sub-related problems.

besides, there is the same xover in the deftech as you'd have to have with a separate sub, except the deftech have them tuned by engineers in their rooms, where the acoustical conditions might be very different from yours. an adjustable xover is a good thing, not a bad one!

    viva los subwooferos!!
