that's pretty much what i thought too...
still, a big air mover in a small area would be at least interesting...
-
as i stated before, i get more bass to my sub when i wire it with the receiver's line out than if i send the same signal to the mains through the sub with speaker-level connections.
but that might just be my personal case.
-
And another saved soul!!!
Halleluja!!
More seriously, we are all glad you didn't go for blose. Trust me, once you hear the Klipsch sound, or any other hifi speaker sound, you will be glad too!
We need your budget to make suggestions, but in the end you'll have to go by ear and listen to all the speakers you can before committing to a pair.
Welcome to the wonders of Klipschland!

i have found i get best results when hooking up the sub to the sub out on my receiver and setting all but the mains at small.
it doesn't make a noticeable difference whether i use the sub's xover or the receiver's bass management WITH MOVIES. with music i get more bass if i use the receiver's bass management; for classical or other finer types of music, i use the sub's xover using the speaker outs, for anything with lots of bass such as heavy rock or rap, techno, etc., I use the receiver's bass management.
hook it up both ways, do some comparisons, make your own decisions.

tv, out of curiosity, do you know of any pro sub that would beat the contra?
i'm guessing one would have to look in the pro circuit to find anything to match and/or beat it...
except of course for an multiple svs array.
anyways, the bass is supposed to be strong, but not all tyhat precise. not a sub for the audiophile or weak of heart!

with mylimited budget, i want to believe (and succeed) that standard Radio Shack big gauge as well as their gold-plated RCA cables is enough and that differences are too subtle for the money invested.
ignorance is bliss.

that's what i thought...

the amp's heatsink on my Paradigm PW2200 sub gets too hot too touch after a good bass-filled 20 minutes, and no problems there whatsoever either.

technically, yes
in a cost-effective way?
depends on your use.
see numerous previous posts.
-
you can try it, buti think you'll get mixed results...
besides, you wouldn't get anywhere close to 4x the bass.
maybe add a couple dB and some extension in the lower bass if you do a good job, but even then you'll most likely have to provide some sort of external amplification in order for it to work properly.

no need to get aggressive.
i'd say there is no real strong reason except the cool factor and the various improvements in quality to go with the 5.1 in your situation, snakescott.
the center channel, as was posted before, is intended in the first place to situate dialogues and some action to the center of the screen in a situation where there are off-axis listeners, i.e. more than one person watching. and it will only really be in use with DVDs and whatever other 5.1 source (such as dts CDs, which you could probably not play on your computer unless you had a dts decoder).
the phantom channel created when downmixing 5.1 to "4.1" is sufficient for most near-field PC applications.
my 2 cents, as always.

mine gets relatively hot, and no problems after a year and a half or so...
-
you'd have improvements if you switched to bigger-gauge wires from the amp (sub) to the sats. i don't think it would make a difference whether you bought Monster or big-gauge Radio Shack generic cables, though.
replacing the miniplugs by honest-to-goodness clips or banana plug-style connectors would also improve the contact, and therefore the sound quality, or at least it would prevent some connections issues I've heard of in the past (i.e. "I have to turn the plug for the speakers to work properly")

Yes; for us, the St-Jean-Baptiste (Quebec's national day, on the 24th of June) and the 1st of July (Canada Day) just passed by.
Funny to see how it's all so close together!
-
I'd just like to add that personally, i'd prefer a sub to rears.
So it's more of a matter of taste.

Ed, don't take that suggestion toooo seriously, I only suggested it because a)the specs look quite impressive in terms of raw air-moving, "Dr. Boom" reviewed it in a special issue about subwoofers, c) you seem quite willing and able to go over the top, and d) I was trying to make you post a little more of that fine humour (I'm still holding my belly from the ducks analogy)...
The sub is innovative, but it would certainly be more adapted to professional use, i.e. discotheques and movie theaters. And in that realm, it's not necessarily the king...
Oh, and by the way, I only wish we had one in our showroom!

differences?
to an instrument, maybe.
to your ears? i doubt it.
unless you've got a REALLY good ear, i'd say there's no way you'd hear the difference.
remember, don't try to cut costs too much...
better tohave a little too much wire that cost you a couple bucks more than just too little, which would force you to buy another complete length for much more...

oh, and ed, i know you're after BETTER bass, but don't you think it would be interesting for you and your mom to try this bad boy?

While I haven't heard all speaker styles in the world, and therefore cannot say for sure, I find it's not so surprising that horn designs are far superior to any other for spectacular movie soundtracks.
And who better than the horn company, Klipsch, to provide the horn sound to a movie theater?
-
Hahaha!!
HornEd, it's always an immense pleasure reading those posts of yours. Funny, interesting and chock full of info!
Seriously, I don't see how people up here in the home audio department could have missed me, given that the majority know much more than me about audio, life, the pursuit of happiness, and the interrelations between the three. Down there in the promedia forum, I could have understood, but up here?
As I previously said, I'm now working in an electronics/computing/comunications/photography/audio/video store, so I'll try to bring as much of that experience to this board as possible. And yes, we sell Klipsch. Looking forward to the end of my probation period, where I will get to buy anything in the store at cost.
I will also try to bring as much of this BB to the store as possible. Oh, and if anyone at Klipsch (or not) is interested in some covert, behind-the-scenes observation of what goes on in Dumoulin authorized Klipsch retailers in Quebec...
Anyways, I think that selling experience will be beneficial to me for my future career, and maybe also financially, if I keep getting better and better at it... hehehe...
Keep up the good works HornEd and other pillars of Klipsch knowledge! And HornEd, profit from you retirement to use that time of yours for experimentations, it profits all of us here.

I, and I'm sure numerous others, would really like some more precisions on your research, preferably in understandable english, I've only had a couple elementary psychology classes...
Therapy by bass? Interesting, could probably use that as an argument to make my girlfriend accept some more of those big black boxes later on when we move in together...

colin: all other things being equal, for subs, bigger = better.

all the movie theaters i've checked out around here use JBL speakers...

just remember, laptop sound cards aren't always top quality so you might get some degree of hissing and the sound quality generally won't be as good as if you used a portable cd player or a good PC soundcard...
