  1. i'm thinking about those beaties [] http://www.worldaudiodesign.com/amplifiers.html
  2. i think Carl nailed it right here. so, does anybody checked such a combination?
  3. I'll contact Bob for the replacement caps. i'm really surprised to hear this as BEC always say that those alnico tweeters not go these days higher than 13KHz. how come new tweeter than goes all the way to 20K won't make a difference? doesn't JBL and Beyma costs the same? 300$ a pair? i was considering actually JBL over BEC's. if my reason is "just go for the best available" - will 2404 be the correct choice? and what xover modes are required for 2404? Does Beyma also require those modes? thanks again for the help []
  4. guys, thanks a lot for your responces so far. i really appreciate it. your the only help i can get as no body here have no expririence whatsoever with those beasts [] i have no idea how old they are but the owner said they supposed to be 1977's. networks not recaped - i will get new caps shortly. i have a good equipment and my current speakers are Audio Physic Virgo III which have very extended treble. i have LS for about 6 months now and i hear for sure that a lot of treble is missing. not that stops me from enjoy and having fun - but i would like to correct this as i understand that it's perfectly possible. i know this, no problem. assistance i'm asking is to get your opinions based on expirience you had. specifically regarding JBL - i have a vintage fan friend and he pumping me that for 104-105 db the 2404 is the best one, nothing can really be better to it, "you can't not to like them" and "you can't go wrong". the downside is 2404's price - but i'm really prepared to put 300$ if it's really the case. your opinions please? BTW - i thought that beyma is 150$ A PAIR - was i wrong?
  5. If i want to go for the best tweeter available (reasonable prices please) to replace my lasala's alnicos (type a xover) - what would it be? i mean, i'm prepared to spend twice as much to get JBL 2404 instead of "try and error" with eminance, BEC, beyma etc. and i don't care that it will sit on top of the speaker. is it an ultimate tweeter for LS?
  6. Chris, my room is big but not that big []
  7. as i said earlier - what i don;t like is a tweeter which is "closed" and grainy without "air". bass bin resonates way too much IMO. overaly my LS is not very transparant. also i wouldn't call it very "natural" - i mean i think it's quite colored - but i'm not sure that it's so bad. what i do like is their dinamycs, huge sound, big midrange, nice "body" (as in most 15"). my subwoofer fills this sub-50hz region very well.
  8. well, as i said earlier - we're talking serious money here. at least comparing to second habd LS' cost on the market. what i can tell untill now is that their sound is addictive [ip]. is there a way back to "normal" speakers? []
  9. well, thx for the input till now. some answers/clarifications.......[*] my equipment: - electrocompaniet EMC 1UP cd player upsampling - very righ "tube like" sounding with a great bass and airy extended treble - sony scd-777es SACD player - conrad johnson pv14 mk2 pre and mv60se power - very good, a bit warm but not too much - REL Stentor sub - a great piece, especially helpfull with Lascalas [] - various expensive cables - mostly with a neutral and very transparent sound (no "transparent cables" though for me [] - good models are way too expensive IMO) my primary priority is stereo music - i listen mostly to the smooth and vocal jazz - bem webster, oscar peterson, ella, mingus, miles davies, brubeck, ray brown etc. Michael, i see you point rearding 104db sensitivity i think that currently i don't have a problem of weak amplification. with my current amp i worked great with 88-92 db speakers. so - amp change isn't an issues for me (correct me if i' wrong). Xman, i'm also confused. by bottom line is that i do have a budget - i'm just wondering whether i should go all the way with LS moding or for the same budget get other vintage 15" speakers like Altecs, JBL's, Infinity etc. Since those are also getting great reviews - but i didn't hear most of them. This is where your guys' help is needed - in case budget is not an issue (say up to 2,500$) - how Lascala's sound can be compared to others "big names"?
  10. I've got this pair of Lascalas recently and they really sound different from anything modern i had untill today. but they're not perfect and require some work and mods. after i've read this forum i discovered that replacement/moding of following things provide significant improvement: - tweeters - xovers - midrange horn - midrange driver - bass bin bracing - porting for lower bass extension after i add to this LS's kinda ugly look and bulky size plus renovation of the cabinets it makes me think - why to go this way? i mean - if somebody wants the best bang for a buck (brithish pound in my case :-)) than i guess nothing can come close to 800$ or so Lascalas. But if someone wants the best if that great, big, neutral, imidiate sound of vintage speakers - then Lascalas require a lot of mods which easily can add onther 1,000$ on top of their cost - so why not go directly to old JBL's, Altecs, Tannoys etc.? in any case i have to thank to PWK and to Lascalas as i think they really got me into this bug. I personaly don't really like Tannoys (although they're the easiest thing to get here in UK) and never heard good Altecs or JBL's........... anyway, speaking financially, i'm at the crossroad where to go and any input will be greatly appreciate.
  11. what the "bleep" is Beyma? ;-) xover......... i see that there are a lot of options. which one is the most transparent and musical?
  12. right.......... i wouldn't want to start an HF related debate - i just like sound of modern tweeters more :-) so, how about JBL?
  13. yea, i've read that - sounds like a good option. what about others? 2404? fostex's? ribbons?
  14. Hi there, i've posted this message in 2-channel forum. this forum is more apropritae - so i post it also here............ recently i've got a pair of Lascalas. Have not idea what year they were made at but they have this round elements - i guess Alnico. they sound pretty impressive but it seems to me that the tweeter is a real week part. what replecement tweeter is recomended? i really like ribbon tweeters - is there such atweeter that fits good to lascala? current tweeters are working but i just feel that their quality isn't on par with modern tweeters. i mean that with a good modern tweeter you can get a better HF extention, more air, etc. i guess that some fostex or alike can be OK. i laso saw that there is JBL 2404 (i hope i get the model right) has the same 104db sensitivity - perhaps this one is good? p.s. later i will have some more questions regarding bracing of the box and amp (currenntly have conrad johnson mv-60se).
