  1. I upgraded the crossovers, but what tweeter upgrade did you do? Looking at the HF horn, it looks like it is already the titanium dome rather than the mylar, but I don't know.....
  2. I recently aquired a pair of 1988 Forte's from the local Craigslist after several months of watching and waiting. The only problem was a broken binding post on the input plate, which I new was fairly easy to fix. When I got them home and listened to my favorite CD's, I was actually surpised at how good they sounded on several different types of music. On some of my more mellow discs such as Pink Floyd's "Division Bell", there was a bit of ringing in the higher frequency's, so I decided to call Bob Crites and order the Sonicap crossover update kit, two pair of upgraded binding posts, and begin the search for a integrated tube amplifier. I received the caps from Bob in only two days [], and immedietly soldered the caps into place. The binding post upgrade proved to be more of a challenge because the studs are much larger than factory and required some circuit board and terminal plate modification, but the solder tab on the new posts made for a very clean and easy connection. I let the speakers play for three days straight to help with the break-in of the new caps, and finally got to listen last night.... Wow! The Forte's have a new smoothness to the top end, and the ringing in the treble is gone. This is a very impressive sounding speaker, and my current mix of tubes & solid state prove to sound just fine which will save me some bucks on additional equipment. Thanks to Bob Crites, and the rest of the Klipsch community for the insite in these forums.
  3. No, it was a rodeo arena. Sadly, a Bose system would be a huge upgrade for Bronco Stadium which has a series of poorly placed PA horns that work intermittently, probably due to the fact that the amps are placed in wooden boxes out in the elements.
  4. No bashing here.... no need to. At the last brick & mortar A/V store I worked at, we had a small listening room set up with a Bose Acoustimass system, and a Klipsch Quintet package with a KSW-12 at matching price points..... never had to bash the Bose because the Quintet system sold itself. The only other time I ran into Bose was on a bid project for a large 10,000 seat multipurpose venue. The ownership group picked the Bose system due to name recognition, although I had bid a complete Klipsch CA-8T based package. I still hear 5 years later how they wish they had chosen the Klipsch system, IMO the Bose is way out of its element in that environment.
  5. Thanks for the very informative points... I generally use the Forte's when I really want to crank up my music. I may just focus my looking to the Scott 299 which would put me right at 31 watts per channel RMS... life is good. Mike
  6. Speaking of power requirements for the Forte's, I am looking at a rebuilt Scott 222 tube integrated (17 watts per channel RMS). I would like opinions from you guys about if you think the Forte's are effecient enough for a tube amp with this low of output. I know these are some of the best sounding tube amps ever made but I have been running the Forte's with an Aragon amp, and while I want a smoother top-end, I don't want to lose all of the bass output. Thanks for any thoughts.
  7. Thanks for the help guys. I was pretty sure they had the 53 midrange, so as long as it's not a big step down from the 55, I will go after 'em hard. I don't see Heresy's in this good of condition locally very often....
  8. I am about to pull the trigger on some local Heresy's, and wanted your opinions. The serial has the "Y" in it, so they are a 1983 vintage with the K-77-M tweeter, but from what I am reading the midrange is not the K-55? I don't know if the picture will help any, unless the horns were visibly different. The crossover is the E-2 version. Thanks for any help/recommendations. Mike
  9. Hey all, I am picking up a local pair of Forte's tomorrow [], and am wondering if my setup will work okay with them. I have an Aragon 4004 MKII amp, an Acurus RL-11 PreAmp, and an AH! tube CD player. I have heard that a tube amp is the only way to go with the horns, but my electronics have never sounded harsh with all the other speakers I have owned. Thanks for any comments. Mike
  10. From the posts I have read it just seemed like people liked the simple point-to-point wiring better. If it doesn't improve sound quality, then it's not a design I have to have.
  11. Ya, I figured that only having an additional $150 budget (over the ELP price) wouldn't be enough to get me a remote added. I'll prolly just have to go used.
  12. Hey all, I am upgrading to a tube preamp (outside chance of SS if I can find a good Acurus/Aragon), so I need suggestions for a no-frills unit (point to point preferred). The only issue is that I need remote volume. I am currently leaning toward the Dodd ELP ($450), but I don't know if he will add remote volume. Willing to spend $600. Thanks for any suggestions. Mike
