  1. Boy! Thanks guys, one can REALLY get an education on this forum. I would be looking to buy these for use...listening, not as a collector obsessed with sequential serial numbers (althought that'd be nice!) I'd have to have them rebuilt and stable. I will check in with the McIntosh upgraders mentioned George
  2. Hi, There are currently on sale on e-bay a real nice looking pair of stock MC-30s for which the seller is asking $2,600.00. I have not followed this market at all, and I am wondering if this is a fair price for these or a bit steep? Also, I would like to hear from some of you who know these better than I do if the MC-30 is much better that the MC-40, MC-60 or other such McIntosh amps and if so, why is it so highly regarded? Thanks, George
  3. Great, if they are oil finish just follow theplummer's advice...kepp them moist with Formby's for a few hours a then rub them out dry. They should look wonderful. George
  4. Congratulations on your new Cornwalls! A pair of these for $150. is a steal! You don't say what kind of finish is on the oak now or what is wrong with the finish as is. If they are oil finish you can just begin applying Formby's Lemon oil furniture polish to them. If they're just dull or uneven in look, that should take care of them. If they have a lacquer finish, are gouged, deeply scratched, have missing veneer that needs to be replaced, provide more specifics and I'm sure someone here will have advice. Best, George
  5. I believe the number refers to the low frequency cutoff of the horn, so the 511B goes down to 500 Hz, the 811 to 800 Hz. I have found this by just ebtering "Altec 511B" into Google to get ot a page where all the specifications for the horns are found. George
  6. Bill, A lot of Klipsch Forum members really like the Jolida tube CD player. I have been interested in looking for a CD player because mine, a H/K unit, is starting to show its age in various mechanical problems. In any case, I was interested in some more detail in your "take" on the Rega Apollo and Klipsch speakers (I have K-horns). One aspect that has given me pause in reviews of Rega CD players is reference to sometimes overemphasis on highs coming across as a little brittle. This is something I don't needs to be emphasized with Klipsch speakers! Thanks, George
  7. Have you checked your stylus's tracking pressure? If the tracking pressure is too light it could cause this behavior. Also, with some cartridges, there is a little stylus protector that is hinged to come down over the stylus and protect it. If this is misplaced down over the stylus, it could cause this behavior. These may be obvious things, but just check them out if you have not done so already. George
  8. I know a lot of people on this forum have many different types of horn loudspeakers--Klipsch, Altec, JBL, etc. I'm wondering how the JBL L300 Summits are regarded and what their sonic character is compared to, say, Altec 19s or K-horns, La Scalas, Cornwalls, etc. I mostly listen to classical music, opera and acoustic blues, folk music, etc. George
  9. Carl, Thanks for providing these links. I had read through some of them, but not all, so it was useful to me to read them. Reactions to the Trachorns seems very positive. I am so pleased to read how much people thought they improved their systems. Waiting for them to arrive just got a little harder. George
  10. For Happy New Year, I ordered a pair of Trachorns from ALK today. Dang! It'll be three weeks before they get here. Don't know if I can survive the anticipation [] I'll be using them in K-horns with the K-55V drivers and BEC's tweeter. I'll be using the Trachorns in place of my present Altec 511Bs. I'd be curious to hear from anyone else who has made this change as to what I can expect to hear. Happy New Year to all! George
  11. Women like *some* black furniture. My wife and I have a Steinway M baby grand. It's black. It takes up about as much floor space as my K-horns. Of course the K-horns are in the corners out of the way, and the piano has to be out in the room. I tried the, "think of the K-horns as large works of minimalist sculpture." Why is the piano "beautiful" and the K-horns "those big ugly things"? Uhh you can see under the piano.... Uhh the piano has elegant curves....Uhh.... Anyway, I'm lucky. My wife is a really good egg. She hasn't fussed at me too much about the K-horns. She smiles at me, kind of shakes her head and says quietly, "You're nuts." I suggested that if there was too much furniture, we could sell the piano. Got nowhere with that one, of course. No one ever plays the piano, but it does a real good job of looking stylish and holding up the family photos. Go figure. Why don't you take your speakers back from the church, give the offended lady ten bucks and let her knock herself out buying speakers ;^)? George
  12. Jack, I did this to my speakers (511B + K55-V with that adapter). I found this combination better than the K-400 horn. I bet you will be pleased with the difference! George
  13. What a great looking pair of K-horns! Congratulations on scoring these beauties! George
  14. I am interested in what used McIntosh tube preamp members here consider to provide the best sound for use with K-horns? Has to have a really good phono section! Thanks, George
  15. Thanks, Is the JBL 2404 a driver or driver and horn combination? If it's a driver, can it go on the 511B or, if not, what horns can it be used with? George
  16. I can't swing Aavantegarde Trios, but I could spend a couple thousand, I guess. Could you explain what you mean by the last sentence in your post? Thanks, George
  17. I am interested in suggestions for alternative midrange and high frequency horn and driver combinations for K-horns. My perspective on the K-55V/Altec 511B combo is that it is better than the K-400, but I'm looking for suggestions that will open up the soundstage to a less constricted width and depth than I am presently getting. IS moving to a larger than 1" throat the ticket to this? I can't build crossovers, etc., so I need suggestions with that in mind fromsome of you who have found success in this search. George
  18. Well, I guess these would be Style Z. A previous owner topped the bass bins with a thick layer of particle board sprayed black. Oh yeah, one of the tops of the upper cabinets had a bit of the very back corner cut down. It doesn't affect anything acoustically, of course, but is another of the many cosmetic "warts" in these K=Horns. George
  19. I'm not sure what the difference between B and C style is? George
  20. Yes, I have the original tweeters (round not square magnets) and the original networks I'd include if someone wanted them. One of the tweeters needs to be repaired. I think Bob Crites does this for ca. $35.00--replace diaphram. George
  21. I guess it's a little bit of both. There are a number of factors at play in the decision, hence the difficult nature of making the decision. I love the Klipschorns, and I love the idea of Paul Klipsch and his genius as a designer, engineer and cantankerous character. What a personality! But the K-horns are a little too overwhelming a presence visually, physically and sonically in my listening space. I don't really have a large enough listening room to let them work at their best. I don't have real corners for them to couple adequately to the walls, corners that are far enough apart or just enough volume of space in the room to get back from them far enough to really let them work their magic at its fullest. Maybe none of that makes sense, but there it is. George
  22. I can get some pictures ready later to show. Can't do that right now. I paid $1,600 for the K-Horns and about $340.00 for the Crites's network and tweeters, and ca. $200.00 for the Altec horns. I'd like to get $1,850 for the K-Horns with the Crites additions and the stock horns, maybe $1,950 with the Altec horns and adapters thrown in too. How's that sound? George
  23. I am considering selling my Klipschorns. They are 1977 vintage, black lacquer, with almost new Crites's netwroks and tweeters. I would call these "handyman specials." They have lots of chips, scratches, dents and dings but are structurally sound. The grilles on the bass bins will need to be replaced. One frame has no grille, others have holes, but all grille frames and mounting are in good shape. These would be great candidates for someone who would like to refinish them or who would like to try out K-horns without spending a lot because the veneer needs restoration. The Altec 511B's and adapters could be purchased in the sale. The original PWK Mid-horns are still in the top sections. They are fully operational and sound great. What are they worth? If anyone is interested in them, I live in Meadville, PA, zip 16335, within ca. two hours' drive of Pittsburgh, Buffalo or Cleveland. I am still not totally decided on selling them, but I am curious what you guys think theyd' bring. George
  24. My Blueberry Xtreme arrived from Juicy Music last night. I didn't have time for an extensive audition, but what I did hear sounded really good over my K-horns. The sound was very detailed with a stable, deep soundstage. So far, I'm very pleased. After my recent shipping disaster with a pair of Welborne SETs, it was a relief to see the box from FedEx arrive in pristine condition. I hope to write more about the sound after I have had a chance to listen more extensively. I'm very grateful to all of those folks on this forum who recommended this preamp to me. Thanks guys! George
  25. How well doea this fabric resemble OEM grilles? I have K-horns and need to replace the sides but not the tops. Will they match? Thanks, George
