  1. nice. yeah, i forgot how i got the THX demo disc, but i won't let it out of my site! the Jungle scene is how i set my surrounds. you can really dial in the placement with that track.

i know it's silly to record your system and then play it though computer speakers, i thought it would be fun. i have no personality so maybe a few members here will make funnier or cooler videos and we can have a nice thread.

  2. i'm not sure if there is a thread for this, but i thought it would be a good idea.

i made a short demo using my THX demo disc (Pod Race) to compare a LPA-1 and XPA-3 amp.  i was sadden when both amps sounded almost the same....

so here is my current 3.1 set up, RF-7 and RC-7 with a tiny 42" TV.  future plan is to buy the 65"-70" tv, mount it to the wall and run all the cabling up the wall.

using a PS3 (i know, seems so old now) for source.

Sunfire True Signature 12" Sub (Signature addition).

    Emotiva UMC-1 paired with XPA-3.

all protected by a Furman 20PFi.

last but not least, all new custom power cables and source cables. as you can see in the pic, the speaker cables are your run of the mil 12awg twisted mil spec wire.  i know, such a crime to have such "garbage" wire, but i have been too lazy to build my new speaker cables.  i had a hunch the "garbage" wire would work just fine.

the video is unedited, because, well, i don't know how to...lol.  other wise i would have cut out the part where the UMC-1 does the famous audio drop! i have the SPL meter in frame for reference.

  3. or just follow the links in my sig :)

oh, i know it's very subjective, but that's why i asked. i haven't heard the new stuff or even know where to find it locally. i'm only 1% considering selling them anyway.

yes, i did take some beat up beasts and make them sing like an opera star!

  4. wow, didn't think the new stuff was so bad.

i do need the cash but that's the heart of the issue.  i'm big into mountain biking and have recently got into road biking.  i need some cash to buy my first roadie, but i'm currently selling other items first.  why this is so hard for me is because these speakers will literally last forever and my new(ish) road bike has maybe a 5 year shelf life.

by the math, if i did get what i asked for, then i could buy the RP speakers and have a big chunk of cash left over to assist in the roadie purchase. Sound Distributors has the 3 RP speakers for less than $1K.

so let me ask this, which mains/center will compete with my current set? are the RP-280F even close?

  5. fellow K-Heads,

i need some advice....i have not listened to the new speakers, RP-260F and RP-440C.  has anyone who has listened to the original RF7/RC7 and the ones i'm considering have an opinion on the comparison? i'm asking this because someone has an interest in buying my set up.  i understand mine are modified and not modified like any other on this forum, so a base line is hard to have.  what i'm struggling with is, once my "babies" are gone, they are gone.  i've spent so much time, energy, and money one them, their value to me is much higher than resale. as i type this, even if the potential owner would give me super high end, top dollar, what i would sell them for, i don't think i would.  i never thought i would feel this way about speakers.

so in a nut shell, are the "new" speakers any good? worth the switch? i know Klipsch is a business and they need to keep designing new stuff to sell, so i do get it.

    thanks for any advice.....

  6. i didn't read any responses...

add my name to the list of people who use Emotiva. i currently have the UMC-1, soon to upgrade to MC-700.  i have also used an LPA-1 in normal and bi-amp configurations.  i am currently using an XPA-3.

this is actually my set up right now.  here is a short you tube video using the LPA-1 and XPA-3 with the UMC-1.  it's not really a comparison video, there is not way to tell by being recorded through a phone and played on computer speakers.

    XPA-3, LPA-1, UMC-1, RF-7, RC-7

  7. you do realize ANY speakers will generate a complaint! you didn't have those speakers that close to the wall when you turned it on did you? those should be around a foot away.  i have mine angled, so 1 corner is around 8" but the other is more than a foot.

i wouldn't sell these and take that kind of loss, i would just play a very low volumes and wait for the crabby neighbor to go out before i crank it up!

can you put extra sound proofing on that wall?

EDIT: what i'm getting at is, if you are already willing to loose $1500, why not take $1500 and sound proof that wall as best as you can....just a thought

  8. thanks! yeah, for some reason the General Population thinks the RS-42 can't hang with "big speakers". that simply baffles me! after i upgraded the crossovers they became amazing clear detailed speakers!

since you have that super nice zoo with the Polar Bear, if you buy all 4, i can easily convince the wife to take the money for the speakers and have a nice quick vacation! my daughter loves polar bears, she still has a stuffed animal since she was 4? (she's 12 now). we have been there once, it was a planned vacation just to see it, but there was a snow storm (not bad though). so we showed up to the zoo, literately us, plus 4 people where there, and we got to see the polar bear do his flips while it was snowing! it was super cool!

  9. i'm a movies only guy.  i don't listen to music on the system at all.  just I Heart Radio in the car...lol

i guess i never looked at the physical footprint of the epics.  they looked like standard towers.  i did contact Bob Crites and he has several upgraded for the KG5.5's, but not Epics.

for movies i know that center is very important, but for some reason when i switch to Stereo it sounds just as good. i know, it probably shouldn't be like that and i may have something out of wack.

  10. My 2013 Onkyo 717 AVR has exactly that same option, but you have it exactly right Colter according to the Onk manual.

Pull off the straps separating the HF/LF.  Go into the On Screen Display of the AVR in the setup and choose "Standard" or "Bi-amp."  Then you are good to go.

The next part I am about to tell you, you already know; it makes almost NO difference in the sound.

I did a lot of critical listening both ways on my AVR with the CF-4's.  I could maybe hear a little bit of clarity in the midrange, but only if I was being picky.  In everyday listening in a blind test I'm very sure I could not tell you if it was in bi-amp mode or standard mode.

    ^^^

he said it right.  can and will you hear a difference if you bi-wire or bi-amp...Yes, is it the best "upgrade" you can do...No.  i've done it, both with an AVR (Onkyo 805 to be specific) and a true amp (Emotiva LPA-1 & XPA-3).  to me, as a picky critical listener i am, the only thing i actually heard was it was a touch "louder". keep this in mind, i'm the say guy who has all custom made cables (all of them) and can hear the differences between gold, silver, platinum, etc...

the biggest issue with a bi-wire (worse choice) and bi-amp is the amount of money you will spend in speaker wire.  to truly squeeze ever ounce of that minor "upgrade" you do need some "good" wire.  i'm not talking $50 a foot wire either, just not pure junk.  the Monoprice will work, but really the stuff you can get for $5 a foot will give you the most out of it.

that's why i say it's not the best upgrade you can do.  the amount of money you will spend in wire a lone, you can either buy a better receiver or amp.  if you were to pair your Onkyo with an Emotiva amp for $300-$400, that "upgrade" would be significant.  (i know, i've done it!).  "wire and cables" should be the LAST upgrade you do.  spend the most on speakers, speaker upgrades, like crossovers, then amps, then receivers.  after all that is done, and your Sub makes your heart sing (those suckers can be $2K+), then worry about cabling.  this is coming from a guy who is a major Cable Guy! (insert clips now...lol)

heck, if you like i'll ship you out a BOX of custom made cables that you can play with.  when you are done, ship them back.  it's really a pain to do that though.  lots of plugging and unplugging, takes ALL day! you have to really want to do that! lol!

  11. hey there my fellow K-Heads!

i have a pair (well 3.1) of RF7's and RC-7 HT set up.  i don't plan on changing the amp (Emotiva XPA-3) or the processor (UMC-1) anytime soon.  i also have a sub i really like (Bob Carver True Sig 12" - the one with the actual signature) and have no issues or wants in the down low dept.  And as many of you know, my set up is heavily modded.

i've always been interested in the 3-Way design, but recently found out that it's a good design but comes with it's issues and headaches.  what ever i do choose to jump to, i'll want to at a minimum update or upgrade the crossover, but would be interested to know if i can upgrade the drivers, woofers, or horn.

i really like what i have, i am just curious what else is out there that has the potential to be "better".

someone suggested the KG5.5, and those look or seem like they would work really well.  i've always liked the Epics (never heard them) and how they look.  i don't want anything that has too large of a footprint.  i'm not interested in Herseys, or anything that size.  i do like front ports, because i don't have a HT room so they need to fit in my living room.

has anyone modded or messed with either of those 2 speakers or has a better suggestion? i'm pretty sure if i do change, i'll change to a 2.1 and drop the center. that is unless there is some super secret awesome center for those older models.  i would love to have the RC64 (any version) but it won't look good on my custom made ET center and i'm not changing that either! lol! and to be clear, i like the LOOK of the RC64, i've never heard it.

the hardest part will be selling the current speakers.  i won't be able to do a thing if i still have them.  so once i decide, there is no going back.  what ever i end up with, if i'm not happy, then i'm stuck with them.  i doubt i'll find someone who wants some 7's so modded because i made them match each other, so they need to go as a set.  in fact, even the rears (which are boxed) are matched to the front 3.  that's why they are still in a box and not sold! i guess i kind of screwed myself! lol!

anyways, information and suggestions are greatly appreciated!

  12. i personally never say "more speakers the better". i rock a 3.1 and am just fine with it.  Youth is right though, the center and mains need to be closer in height. so even if you mind a magical center that fits and timber matches, the height distance will ruin your sound stage.

really, i'd just leave it be.

  13. i haven't noticed a difference between Blue jeans vs monoprice vs custom made.  where i do notice a difference, is custom made XLR (but it's still not "night and day).  i even have a 50' RCA sub cable from monoprice and it will sound the same as a 10'.  oh, also upgraded power cords do nothing as well.  the only thing that makes the "big" difference is running a 2 male 1 female splitter ($0.65 @ monoprice) and connecting your LFE and Right RCA ports on the sub.

  14. sorry, i didn't read all the responses, but i wouldn't buy any tv right now.  i'm in your same boat, i really want one, but the new 4K blu-ray player are coming out and there is a hardware change to be able to accept the 4K.  i read only a few different write ups, but they "believe" our current HDMI size and shape connections will be the same, but a new HDMI might need to be made.  i think the ones at monoprice should be good, but no one really "Knows."

in the article it said most 4K tvs out now, can't and won't handle the new 4K players.  it has to do with the new format is going to 4K/60htz.  i forgot which tv, i think the latest samsung, can handle the new players but samsung will sell you a "upgrade kit" to hook to your tv.  i think LG said they will send a technician to your house and upgrade it on the spot.

anyways, that's my 2 cent's good luck with your TV search!

  15. i guess this entire topic is now dead.  i just pulled my head out of the sand and realized 4K blu-ray players are coming out this year. i was going to buy a 4K TV but the articles say some 2015 TV's won't be able to support the 60FPS of the new format. can't wait to see how much the first Oppo 4K blu-ray player will be! lmao! i contacted Emotiva and asked about UMC-1 upgrade support, but i'm sure the answer will be, "buy a XMC-1"! lol! good thing i still have that 40% discount card!
