  1. my 2 cents says, don't make a decision until you have heard them both. you are right, between the 63 and 83, specks are close, but the deciding factor will be your ears. i truly wouldn't make a decision until you sit down and listen to both. i myself have only heard the 83's and i will agree, even though the room sucked (as far as acoustics and placement) those speakers sounded great. if you can't listen to the 63's, then since the money factor is so close you can get either one, then i would just go for broke and get the 83's.
  2. i agree with beesley, i own a whole set of the synery line up (see sig). i really like my mains. for $100 the 8.5 is well worth the money. those speakers for starters will work out very well. your son should be happy.
  3. terry, i am going to buy the house around march of next year. once the paper work is signed and all that goes through, they figure the house will be built around september, maybe a month sooner. refresh my memory, what offer???
  4. not going to build the cubby holes. terry (falcon) asked me a simple question of upgrading in the future, and it hit me. if i build the cubby holes then i am limited to what i can purchase in the future, even if it is 20yrs down the road.
  5. alright, got it. thanks for the info wstrickland1
  6. are you implying that "getech" is a bad seller? (i like how you seperated that is may be a bad seller but not a bad person).
  7. is $2000 your total budget for your speakers? i have a 6.1 now but i have the extra speaker for the 7.1 set up. i would try to do the 7.1 set up but your budget on the speakers is low and you may not be able to buy them all at once. if it were me, i would go with a 3.1 set up for now, and when money allows, but the rest of the speakers. go out and find the rf -63 with the matching rc-64 center. forget about the sub for now and the surrounding speakers. buy a junkie all in processor for around $200 or even less (just so you can hear the speakers). as for in wall speakers, i have asked the question already, and the true answer is this: if you go with in wall, you will NOT get the same quality of speakers at stand alone. it's not even advisable to buy floor standing speakers and to put them into a wall. bottom line is klipsch speakers are beautiful, don't spend all that money and then hide those beautiful works of art. most people can't buy everything they want at once so you have to choose some items first. the best thing to do i spend as much as you can for the speakers. i have owned the speakers in my sig for over 9 years. once you buy a set of klipsch, you pretty much stick with them for a long time. the electronics part of ht will be swapped out every few years. don't buy them until EVERYTHING else is set up. that is why i suggested the cheap all in one receiver for now. (i still have my junkie receiver from 9 years ago). as far as receivers go, it really depends on you. how much are you willing to spend on one and what do you think you need. i always recommend www.outlawaudio.com because they are good for the money. there is also Rotel, and even Emotiva. i want to also mention, new speakers are not always the best ones. i just went to a guys house who had speakers from the 70's and they sounded as good as the new rf-83's. the series name was Herseys. you will have to ask around about those, i know little to nothing about them. i hope this helps.
  8. see that is the trick. you get the wife involeved. sometime ago i was watching football. my wife up to this point hated it. she sat down beside me and asked me to explain the game. i did, and now we both will race home to catch the game. i have to tell you though, but the end of the game my wife was yelling and screaming at the teams! it was the funniest thing i have ever seen!
  9. terry, i guess you didn't read the post on it. it's a cool room.
  10. it was very informative. i think i just saved a few thousand, yes at least $2000, just sitting down and looking at someone else's stuff. terry (falcon) even helped me in designing my room. he just said something simple and it sparked a reality. all in all everything went well, and i have to add, we were there almost 5 hours and Jeff (EQ) just kept playing music and movies until our little hearts were full. EQ also gave me some links to save money one items that i would normally pay top dollar for and not even think i was getting ripped off. the chairs he had were the exact same thing i want and his was at least $1200 less than what i was willing to pay, not including taxes or shipping. one funny thing that happed was EQ had some old Herseys and Terry was sitting quietly in his chair, then he sat up quickly and stated "man these sound as good as my 83's." i won't mention prices, but after jeff told him what he paid for his entire system of speakers i thought we were going to have to resuscitate Terry! i will also add that jeff let me, basically a stranger, borrow his test dvd and meter! how cool is that! i did go home and my system was so far out of wack. i changed everything now (even sub placement) and i have to say the movies do sound better! i was also helped in the matter of not having "black bars" on my screen. yes i really didn't know that all movies were not the same. i figured if it said "widescreen" and i bought a widescreen screen, i wouldn't have any black bars. turns out i have to see how the film was shot and then adjust the projector for that. there is a black screen box thing that goes in front of the projector (i know jeff you told me the name like a thousand times, and i still don't know what it is.) and it turns out i really need it, especally since i don't want the black bars. man i could keep going, but i will keep it short...well sort of....lol
  11. no problem man. i will keep everyone posted.
  12. i work night so i would normally go to bed around 1-2am. on saturdays or fridays we may stay up later watching movies or just sitting together.....can i get an aaaawwwww.... i was just on long enough to respond to some posts and then joined my lovely wife in our bed.
  13. oh oh, i want to chime in.....klipsch rule! you should ask them if they actually own a pair of klipsch or are they going of some BB salesman? it could also be they went into a BB and they had them set up all weird, but i know for a fact then didn't visit a place like Starpower and go into a klipsch room. no offense, they are talking out their A**
  14. well sounds like a great time. i am not much of a drinker anymore, i still like the social stuff, and once in a while me and the misses gets A 6pack (yes we are light weights) and we have a good night. if you ever want good german food along with a good german "pills" i'll give you the address. just be warned, if you go, you may never eat anywhere else again! see you sunday.
  15. we should start a poll and see how many people don't get helped from bb kids and are so frustrated just don't go. i usually end up at frys where usually i do get someone who knows a lot more than i do. i do sometimes get some idiots, i then ask for someone else. one time it was so bad i almost went to the manager. i don't want to offend anyone, but the sales man didn't even speak english that well. how on earth can a customer and sales man discuss buying a product when they can't understand each other? i just ended up walking out. i then returned a few days later, got a different sales man (one i have see and spoken to before) and bought the product. for the most part i just stay away for bb. i come here or cable solutions to get info, i then find the product i want, if it's there i go straight to it, buy it, and walk out as fast as i can.
  16. if he bought the BB warrenty it would be, other than that, SOL. when i do buy stuff theri i always buy the warrenty. i have had to trade in everything i bought there at least once!
  17. well i figured since they were the ksb 1.1 and they have the front bass ports, the cubby hole wouldn't be much different from mounting them on a flat wall. i am not sure if i will even be able to do it. i was looking to mount the speakers further back without having me sit too close to the screen. by the pictures it seems like i have enough room for the rears, but i'm not too sure.
  18. i am tossing about this idea. it might come down to if the builder wants to do it or if the inspector lets. it's really a simple idea, i want to make two cubby holes for the rear speakers. this way i can mount the speakers vertical just like the side ones. it also takes the speakers out of the room a little more, allowing for more space. i am only talking about maybe 10" or so but i guess that can make a difference. look at the drawing and let me know what you think. room cubby hole.pdf
  19. well if it works it can't be all that bad...lol good job!
  20. falcon i feel your pain. i went to BB one day looking for a cable. i was getting the cheaper AR type because it was analog. (not going to pay for monster at all costs!). i was just standing there looking at the cables and a sales man and customer were in my way. i waited patiently for them to move, they finally did. after a few more minutes the customer turns to me and asks ME what i thought of the cable choice. well i had tuned out the sales man so i had the customer tell me his budget, what he just bought and what he currently has. 45 minutes later i got the guy to buy the right cable for his needs and current set up. the sales man that was helping him after about a minute or two of me talking quickly walked away and a few other sales men came and listened. the funny part was the sales men that came to listen was laughing because i was telling the customer the truth and not trying to get him to buy some hdmi cable for almost $90 when he barley could afford a $10 cable. the laughing sales man would chime in every few seconds and tell the customer that i was right and he should follow the advice. the customer was very happy because he was finally getting helped and not SOLD. it just goes to show you some kid that doesn't even know a thing about ht is trying to sell stuff he doesn't even know. all he knows is how to read the card and point. i barley know anything about ht (hence all the questions i have asked) but i am at least willing to tell someone "i don't know, let me ask someone who does." thats why i go to this forum, in fact anyone who want to buy klipsch i tell them to go here. sometimes i want to go to BB and tell those kids to go wash their face and get back to me after they have actually read on the subject more. sorry got on the soap box....
  21. hey yeah, bring that so i can see what one looks like. i may just buy one very soon so i can at least dial in my set up. i live in an apartement so my system just sucks as far as placement.
  22. falcon, you got some 83's? congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!
  23. i agree. spend the most money you can on the speakers. electronics will come and pass, you will keep the speakers for a very long time. i have the speakers in my sig for at least 10 years, they still sound great and get the job done. go broke on the speakers, and then buy a junky all in one receiver so you can listen to them. save up some money and then get a good set of seperates. i would suggest www.outlawaudio.com they have really good stuff priced very well. just my 2 cents
  24. with the carpet, i can put anything down. the house isn't built and i can just ask them to install the carpet in that one room. the whole house is the "basic" carpet, don't know which brand it is. in the media room, there will be a .5" pad, and i guess just get a good thick or fluffy carpet? if you know of a name (for example "burber") let me know. i don't have any music cds. yes i know thats sad, but i don't own a single one. i also don't own a spl meter. i should go out and get one and tune in my system now. i know it's off, i just can't do anything about it now.
