  1. Sounds like a great project. Good luck. Jorjen, your LS looks outstanding!! Well built and veneer is gorgeous. You do good work!!
  2. JL, that's what I'm thinking/wishing. Wide throat on the horn and I need to measure but it's a least 2" or more. It would certainly be a conversation piece if nothing else.
  3. I got to think about using a pair of metal Victrola horns I have laying around in a two way system - ala Belle or LS. I know call me crazy. I realize I could just use the myriad of horns on the market but this intrigues me. I have no idea of the low cutoff on this horn but I would imagine it could get to 500Hz. Some will ask why in the heck are you even thinking about this. That is a good question and I wish I had a good answer. Probably have too much time on my hands. I'm either going to sell the horns (they have wooden shutter type horn extensions) otherwise. Any thoughts, criticisms, suggestions or donations to my build (just kiddin) are accepted. Thanks.
  4. I'm considering attaching velcro to overalls and my hand tools so I can have them nearby. I would probably still look around the shop before I remembered I had them on me!
  5. Thanks Muel. BTW I found some scientific research as to time usage in a wood shop which definitely applies to me!
  6. Thanks Schu. No stain. I used Minwax wipe on poly satin (6 coats) then wet sanded then applied finishing wax with 0000 steel wool. The poly has a little amber tint. Really smooth finish.
  7. Got the first one finished and delivered. Heavy!!!!!! My friend is going to try to get brown cane grill cloth installed. Starting second one now. Hope it goes faster than the first
  8. Got the speaker upright last night and put another coat of finish on. Woofer is installed. Need to complete finish and rub down work, reset grill frame magnets from inside mid horn cabinet, trim grill frame down and insert new magnets, install xover and speakers, test, deliver, and start on second one!
  9. HDBR, the riser is attached using pocket screw to the bottom of the bass bin - not to the bottom cover over the woofer hatch. My friend/customer had another set of LS redone with a riser that wasn't made the way he asked so we made changes to this pair. What the heck it's just more weight!!! Here's a pic of the bottom hatch cover in place. Tonight I'll stand this sucker up and do some final finish work and grill frame mods and then start the rub down later this week and then wax on/wax off procedure. Schu, the customer is a friend that has always wanted LS with 1" BB ply so that is what we're doing.
  10. Thanks for the compliment Rich. Every now and then I screw around and something comes out okay! I subscribe to the Native Indian rule of woodworking. I always make at least one mistake because only God is perfect!!!! At least that's my story and I'm stickin to it!
  11. Update. All the pieces are attached including a 4.5" custom riser base per the buyers instruction. Two more coats of finish then rub down and installation of speakers and xover and its ready for deliver
  12. Yes it's always something. My wife is having surgery Jan 4th so I'll be nursing her back to health!! Kids were home for Christmas so that's always good.
  13. Thanks for the compliment Schu! I appreciate it. AVGUY sorry to hear about your mom. Hope she recovers. I know you were going to build some Belles but didn't know if you had started. Do you have all the speaker components and xovers for the Belles? I've got a friend that is looking for two Belle mid horns (K500?). He is going to buy the Belles I just finished (at least the bass bin) if we can locate a Belle mid horn. I'm building these LaScalas for him now. Thanks.
  14. Tri, I dont have the woofers now. The mains specs are above and you might conside the 10" PE woofer at the link below which has specs that are pretty close. You need the 8 ohm version because the two woofers are wired in parallel as I recall???? check to see if the cutout size is correct. http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-dsa270-8-10-designer-series-aluminum-cone-woofer--295-532
  15. Tri, I dont have the woofers now. The mains specs are above and you could try to find a replacement non-Klipsch woofer from PE or elsewhere that might work. Good luck
  16. I've got 3 coats of finish on these now and will get two more on this weekend. I am gluing the veneer on the inside of the side pieces in the bass bin now. Pics is a dry fit of the sides showing how they look now. Hope to get these built this weekend and start on the outside veneer and then front edge solid cherry trim and bottom riser with cherry outer kickboard.
  17. Thanks for the compliment Lasz. Yes I did use the original squawker driver with the PE 8 x 12" horn. Bass is tight and not boomy at all. Good low end.
  18. Got the magnets set below the veneer on the HF/MID board and cherry veneer applied. This shows with one coat of wipe on poly applied. Easier to get the inside finished before applying the sides, top and back brace.
  19. Istics, I've converted H1 speakers into a larger vented box using the T/S parameters to get lower base but the K-22 woofers have limited excursion as they are well suited for sealed enclosures. Not sure about the H2 specs or xmax. I would suggest going with the PE 8 x 12" horn for $10.00 (now $7.50). Part number 270-304. These are bolt on horns but you can use screw on adaptors to make them fit. I built new cabinets for two conversions I did. See pics.
  20. 18 degrees here so little progress. Did get the HF/MIF board cutouts made so I can attach to the front, recess neo magnets for grill frame, then veneer and trim out openings. Hope to get that done tonight. 1" board shown with veneer I will cover.
  21. Thanks Carbon for the compliment. Will be glad to get one done. Second one should go faster since I have the actual measurements from the first and learned along the way.
  22. Back spasm Friday morning (wonder from what???) slowed me down this weekend. Weather didn't help 77 saturday afernoon and 17 degrees the next morning. Got the bottom section done just need the sides, top and front mid horn panel and back brace. Made a jig to use on K400 and EV77M rear mounting tweeter. Hope to get everything veneered and assembled this week.
  23. Thanks for the pics Andy. Speakers look great. I like the vertical grain on the front top board. . I plan on insetting 3/8" neo magnets in the mid/hi front board under the veneer to allow attaching the grill without any velcro or grill guides.
