  1. I've seen some beautiful systems on this forum. My system is a hodge podge of whatever I have laying around from day to day. This morning It's a Sonance 100wpc SS amp, a Yamaha C-45 SS preamp missing a couple of buttons, Luxman CDP, Marantz black EQ, Sony 270 Reel to Reel, Realistic Lab 500 TT, Curtis Mathis (technics) cassette deck and Klipsch KP-201s. Wires and cables everywhere. What a mess. Most of this gear belongs to customers and I'm playing it all out after repair except for the Luxman(intermittant problem I can't find).

Anyone else have a "Garage Sale Leftover" system?

  2. In '71 I was home on leave from the USMC and in 1 week I got 4 speeding tickets on the same stretch of New York street by the same cop. I went to court in uniform and noticed on the judges bench was a small "Eagle, Globe, and Anchor" plaque. (logo of USMC). My defense was I was a Marine and the cop was probably an army MP. I claimed I was being picked on because of "rivalry of military branches". The cop fessed up he had been an MP and the judge dismissed the charges and scolded the cop for the harrassment. On the way out of court I apologized to the cop. He laughed at me, shook my hand, and said he was proud of our servicemen and I should have told him I was on leave. Good Guy that cop.

A couple of months later I received a letter from the judge on USMC military stationary. We became "pen pals"

I don't drive fast anymore. Except on the track. I do however drive my speakers to maximum levels with maximum power at times.

I was mono-blocking PS400 Crowns about 2 years ago running Cornwalls and brought both 400's up to full power and slowly cranked the IC150a preamp completely

. Ran them that way for 15 or 20 seconds showing off for a friend. He made fun of my ugly system all the time until that day. Crowns and CWs, "Refridgerators and Black boxes" It don't get much uglier than that.

  3. Bob,

I bought these around 3:00 pm today. I checked and the screws hadn't been "tampered with". I called Colter to see If he was interested in them. No answer. He called back later and the way he talked they possibly had another tweeter besides the 76 or 79 in them. I didn't recognize the number he fed me. There may be a variant not as well known. Except to Mr. Industrial or some other geek like him.

Most of the Klipsch I've seen are numbered. Don't mean squat I guess. Can he send you pics?

After dealing with Cornwalls for the past 20 or so years nothing surprises me about what is put in a Klipsch speaker.

  4. Bob,

I just pulled the tweet from the KP-201s I bought today. they have the K-76-K. I talked to colter today and he said they could possible have another tweet in them. I'll send pics if you need.

  5. ask colterphoto1, I am sure he has some ideas.. Looking forward to seeing you next week!'

I called him as I was looking at them this afternoon. They really are in super condition outside of the minor scuffs. Too bad they are in the ugly pro finish. At least they're not "rat hair" finished.

I gotta fes up on these. I know they are a HeresyII basically. Up until now I haven't been overly impressed with the Heresy. I'm into the big Heritage. "No substitute for cubic inches". These shocked me when I fired them up on my 6L6 monoblocks. Best sounding of the "Heresy" I've heard yet. Horns are smooth and full and the bass was adequate. Excellent actually for a speaker of this size. I'm glad my opinion was changed. It's not good to have so much info available at times. It is very easy to get a mind set and not actually give something another chance or listen. Showed me not to be "closed minded" for sure.

I'm looking forward to next week also and meeting ya Roger. This will be the first for me. I've been doing audio repair for decades and I've been a Cornwall owner since the mid 70s. This forum and the Klipsch world have been great for me since I joined the forum instead of just reading the posts. I have to say that I've liked all the members I've met. Mutual love and devotion to these wonderful speakers is a good binding experience I can treasure in my life. It is a new addition to a good life I already have. My thanks to all I've interacted with and the experience you all share.

  6. I picked up a great sounding pair of the KP-201's today and they have some scuffing from being moved around. They are finished in a matte black. No chips or gouges noticable. I want to refinish the cabinets and I was wondering what it the proper paint? to use on these. Does Klipsch have a factory refinishing product for these? Advice or suggestions welcomed gladly.

  7. Chalk it up to "non matching" equipment. I've heard many a sx-950 and it's one of my favorite Pioneers. Good power and sound pretty nice. It's the only one of Pioneers' '50 or '80 series I care for. I tried the same match about a year ago on my Heresys and I was disappointed also. I thought they were shrill and flat with the Pioneer. I hooked up an old Sansui 5000x and they came back to life and sounded excellent. Some components just don't match up well at all. My experience and now yours tells me this is one of those combos that don't cut it. Try them on another receiver or amp and the difference can be pleasing.

  8. Roc,

I'm going on long term memory scan here. Lou Michaels? Maybe. Hard to remember for sure. I know dad was always pretty keen on the kicker too. We would stand in the kitchen in front of the old Zenith tube radio and dad would always have a long wire antenna waving it around or handing it to me and make me move around until he would command "FREEZE" and there I would stand with the antenna. I would stand still as long as I could but I was just a young un' back then. We didn't get the Colts on TV very often back then. We did get the Bears more often. I watched the 61or 62 championship game the Bears played in and later remembering when Gallimore and 3 other Bears players were killed in an accident. Long, long ago....... I just packed up the old Zenith yesterday. We put dad in a long term nursing home saturday. Stroke. Darn rough on him. He's doing the "in and out" memory thing. Sometimes living 40 years ago. Heck, maybe he will think about his old Colts and smile a bit. They always made him happy. I was the one stuck holding the antenna up in the air for hours. I must have looked stupid playing the "human antenna". LOL!

Yep, the Baltimore Colts were sacred in our home. I'm not sure dad was ever too happy about the move either. He did finally become an Indy Colts fan in the last couple of years. Thanks Baltimore for a good team. My personal apologies for the way it came about. I can tell you for certain this town was in shock when It happened and WE WERE NOT HAPPY the way it all came down. It wasn't our nice town that did this, just a politician and business owner doing crap under the table as usual.

Good luck to the Ravens. Except against "THE INDY COLTS".

  9. Great!!!,

I'm getting old and my vision is on the downside. I NEED the lighter colors to see. After I get used to something it all comes natural but I switch around quite often with numerous systems and repetition/habit is out the window here. Late at night most of my lighting is by hot glowing tube in the front room anyway. I try to keep a small light handy just to check settings and adjustments. Silvers just make it easier late at night or in low light conditions. I wear tri-focals now when I work on gear. No can do black.

I've got a new preamp on the way as we speak. I bought another McAlister to match my amp. I buy a couple of new pieces every year and I've been looking at yours pretty close the last couple of months. After this system is put together I'm looking at the VRDs and BBX though I'm about through with vinyl (for now anyway I'm keeping lots of vinyl in the closet) and thought about the Peach before I ordered the McAlister New Design.

Juicy Music is well thought of in many circles. I will own one very soon. In silver of course. Hey, I'm not extremely stupid. I love good gear. Yours is a must.

    Harry

  10. In addition to my extreme hatred for Indianapolis'

WOW! I know how you feel. Some people rub me wrong. I didn't think Bob Irsay was exactly honorable in the move but I'm sure the Attorneys had a big say so in the "larger profit" deal Irsay made. I stayed loyal to the Bears until Ditka was let go. Indy is a good city. At least we didn't get stuck with Cleveland Leftovers and hand me downs. I'm not sure how many of our players have been charged with Shootin' someone.

GO COLTS!!! BEAT YOUR A$$ IN THE PLAYOFFS TOO!

I was a Baltimore Colts fan also. Dad bled for the Colts. Some defensive end from Kentucky was his hero. Bears were the #1 football love for me. It hurt as bad when Ditka was let go. It was the end of "Da Bears" as I knew it. Papa bear roaming the sidelines in his overcoat, Atkins and Evy being turned loose from the asylum for football season. It was all gone. I don't hate Chicago though. I'm now an Indianapolis Colts fan. Class organization in every aspect. Proud of the CURRENT management. Hey, Tony George ruined the Indy 500 here. I can't hear his name without the feel of chewing on aluminum foil. Big bucks power plays.

Sorry for rubbing it in. It is in good humor and I really don't want to offend. Just "sports" ribbing. Sincerely, that's all.

  11. Mark1101

I am in 100% agreement with you. I don't think one tube brand is a universal fit in ALL equipment. I've been doing the tube thingy on and off for the better part of 40 years now. Some of my equipment I can throw in about any kind of tube and it's great. No problems. Others are very picky about what kind of glass I feed them.

Tweaking out a high end system for the last bit of smile on my face is part of the joy of tube listening. Like the majority of audio geeks I've spent a lot of money on my system. I want the most I can get out of it. Every note reproduced is important. Every piece I own gets a critical listening and Tweaked to max if possible. I take a lot of steps backwards sometimes too.

I'm not complaining about any particular tube brand per se but I'm concentrating on the preamp right now. I find the older NOS(liberal translation) tubes a bit more pleasing to my ears for the most part. I have literally thousands of NEW, NOS and used tubes I've acquired over the years just sitting around collecting dust for the most part. I don't care for the sound of most of them either. If I was running VRDs and JMs only I'm sure it's a well travelled path with well documented solutions. Much easier. Of course I haven't gone this route. Yet. The VRDs are looking good though. So is the JM gear. (MD, BTW, I like silver face. HINT HINT)

I'd love to find a cheaper path of course. Sometimes the cheapest tubes turn into the most expensive by the time I find the sound I'm looking for out of my gear. I understand mass production needs for stock but individualizing or tuning if you may is what I'm trying to accomplish here. Just looking for suggestions from our members here. I TRUST your ears and wallets when it comes to our hobby/passion. I didn't ask anywhere else for this reason. This forum is the best in my opinion. Some smart people here. I feel so inadequate in my audio knowledge at times. Some of our members are very educated in this field. YOUR opinions do matter to me. (except for short pants kids)

I just pulled out the Seimans and put them in the pre. Warming up now. I'll let you know what I find with them.

    Any more?

  12. Fiberglass is a very good material for repair. MDF damage should be completely ground out and removed leaving only good solid MDF base to be repaired. If not, the damage will show up pretty quick the first time any pressure is applied to the original damaged area.

I had a pair of Carver Amazing Silvers shipped to me that were destroyed due to poor packing. I was ripped off by the sender and the only recourse was repair or trash the "Cabinets". Anyway, on the initial repair I ground out just enough MDF to reshape and fibreglassed over the damage so they could be repainted. It wasn't but a couple of weeks and the damage underneath started showing through the black gloss finish. I had to re-repair the original damage by removing all the damaged MDF and filling with reinforced fiberglass. Repairs held up fine then.

I don't like standing up for any shipping company but I will say that FEDEX is the only one of "The big three" I've had any satisfaction with on claims. Two claims and both were settled in a professional and very timely manner. UPS has stuck me in the A$$ by using their typical list of excuses without even an attempt to investigate. USPS....well I shudder thinking of all the "hoops I have to jump through" dealing with their year long + claims process.

Make sure you save all packing materials associated with the shipping and throw nothing out if you're filing claim.

Best of luck in this situation.

Large speakers CAN be safely shipped when packaged properly. Corner and edge protectors work! Remember, nothing is safe from the shipping gremlins though.

  13. I have found the EH tubes to be very good. 6922, 12ax7, 7591

Man, I hate to admit this but I'm no fan of the EH. I'll probably be banished to some distant place like the "Isle of Bose" or somewhere just as unrespectable but they just don't do it for me. I don't have the tube lingo down but to me they have "No Color". My ears say "YUK".

  14. The Nak is a heck of a good deck. Parts are plentiful and very reasonably priced. Best part is they are super simple to work on. If you do decide to get it replace the idler if it is noisy. A complete rebuild kit for it is less than $30 for high quality precise fitting parts.

Nakamichi has been supplying their heads to many deck companies for decades. Without a doubt they are some of the finest sounding units on the market.

I've worked on dozens of them. Solid units and sound as good as any.

  15. Harry, it looks like this 2245

I looked in my boneyard and checked for tuner boards. I had 3 that were all similar. There were minor differences in all of them. I've no idea of the interchange on the boards but just guessing on this next statement. "If you're going to swap out boards make sure it is identical in every aspect". I'm no Marantz expert by any means but I have 2 2235s and both have minor differences on the boards. Different #s on them. I'd DEFINITELY find out what fits your model before you spend your money and the techs time.

  16. Seems like we're all finding out the same thing on the 6DJ8/6922. Noise is a problem with the BBs. Strangely enough I'm already running the Seimans in my CD player. I'm getting tube poor and way too much stock playing the tube game. Looking for good starting points and the help is definitely appreciated.

The application is a Dodd Audio ELP pre.

    Thank you,

    Harry

  17. Arky,

Do you have any idea what will interchange with it? I've got a "boneyard" with a few old Marantz pieces in it. I know I've got a couple of the old marantz silvers laying around canabalized. 2235, a 2252, a couple of the old quads, and I'm not sure what else.

  18. ....and within the first 10 minutes I was hooked

Yep, Them Big Ol' Uglys will do that to you!

Denon or Yamaha would be my choice if I were to go SS Surround. Better out there but you pretty much have to "Mortgage the farm" if ya know what I mean. These two are hard to beat for the bucks.

Nice pick up on CWs. What, no pics? You gotta show pics!

Harry BTW, Cornwalls with hot, glowing, glass is another....and within the first 10 minutes I was hooked
