  1. I live in an apartment and volume is critical. I've found the CWs and tubes are great late at night. Plenty of full and deep music at lower volumes with vinyl or disc. I pretty much gave up the vinyl a few months back but I don't feel the larger Heritage speakers magnified "impurities"any worse than the Heresy. Pretty much the same driver configuration except for the woofs.

I think you'll love the increased sound from the larger Heritage at night especially. In an apartment the CW doesnt' depend on "bouncing" bass to sound good. I don't disturb my neighbors at all with my tube/Heritage combo. I keep late hours with no problems.

  2. Harry, those are nice amps. Wish I had found them for that price. I would love some 6L6 amps.

They do sound sweet. Totally quiet. No unwanted noise whatsoever. What's really amazing is that I just put the tubes on the tester and one of the 6L6s on each amp is totally dead. I don't have any 6L6s here and I'll buy a quad of Sovteks at IRC Music in the morning. I can't wait to hear them after the new tubes burn in about 50 hours or so.

  3. BEST LAWYER STORY OF THE YEAR, DECADE AND PROBABLY THE CENTURY!!!

    Charlotte, North Carolina

A lawyer purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars. He then insured them against, among other things, Fire. Within a month, having smoked the entire box of these great cigars and without yet having made even his first premium payment on the policy, the lawyer filed a claim against the insurance company.

In his claim, he stated the cigars were lost "in a series of small fires."

The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason, that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion.

    The lawyer sued and WON!!

Delivering the ruling, the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous, but nevertheless, the lawyer held a policy from the company, which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable. Even against fire without defining what is considered unacceptable "fire" and was obligated to pay the claim.

Upset, the insurance company paid the lawyer his winnings of $15,000!!

    NOW FOR THE BEST PART!!

After the lawyer cashed his check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON!!!

With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case being used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000 fine.

This is a true story and was the First Place winner in the recent Criminal Lawyers Award Contest

    You gotta love it.

  4. The British invasion was here. Dylan was hot. The Byrds. Pioneer 8-track super sound with about 8 speakers tied around moms hand me down '62 Fairlane station wagon. Scored big one night with Laura H. to The Associations' "Cherish". Bobby Goldsboro had a few good songs as did Tommy James. Led Zeppelin hit me hard. Clapton, Mott the Hoople, the Who. Life changed all around. Boones Farm moved over and passed the Doobie to "Love Saves" and Gooda Cheese. Sit on the side of the interstate and listen to the trucks blast by with some "Neckers" and chew the tops off the cactus. Chicago was a good band. Motown was so effin cool by '68. Diana Ross was always a good choice on a date. mom's old Fairlane gave way to a '65 Goat 4 yanker. Still kicking the Led, Iron Butterfly Metamorphasis. Trower was coming into his own. Saved up and scored a Pioneer Super tuner cassette player for the Goat. Big old dial on the face. Cassette was AWESOME. No more 8 track hiss and chunks between tracks. Caught my first good concert home on leave. '69. Styx, Serpent is rising I believe. Little Rock Arkansas. It was in a great big bar. My best Bro (Halstead) Blew the motor in the Goat the next night. I gave it to him to drive when I went overseas. I guess it was time for the nylon gears to let go on the timing chain anyway. Valves through the piston. Scuffed up a couple of cylinders beyond the bore. Hendrix, Joplin, Stones, Strawberry Fields forever, Apple, Mclain. I still don't remember much. Kick a.. HardRockin' time

    I hate getting old

  5. Well. like Payden says in "Silverado"----"Bad luck".

Things have been going well for me this last year or so. Business is good, health good considering the alternative, Kid is happy, I'm happy. A small storm won't get me down. Everything I lost can be replaced. We weren't hurt. I'm thankful the results are what they are.

I lost my wife a few years back. I realized then if your problems are money then you really don't have problems. The way I look at this is I'm lucky for what didn't get damaged or what I didn't lose.

There probably isn't a lot of audio gear or electronics on this forum that can't be replaced with money. Or at least substituted in some form or another. The things that are important to me came through just fine.

If I have to replace any gear I think of the fun I'll have buying, setting up, playing, and yakking about the new stuff. I'm not worried about what I don't have or what it's going to cost. I'll figure that all out somehow as I go. Besides, some of you guys will have something super cool for sale eventually I'll get to play with.

To put this in perspective, New Orleans and the gulf area had a storm a while back. That was a storm. There was alot more lost than a PC and a couple of electronic pieces and appliances. "Bad Luck?"

Thanks for the input guys. It helps keep my mind on an even keel while I mess around with this da....d Vista

I did spend another $500 on a camera, scanner/printer/copier. Incompatable software with my old equipment. Man, Vista bites the big one.

  6. Come on Harry, dust those things now and then..............

    Ob,

I just picked these up a couple of weeks ago and I'm playing them out for a while to determine what I'm going to do with them. This is my second pair of Triad Monoblocks. These use the 6L6, 12AX7, and 5U4GBs. I stripped them out of an old Baldwin organ I picked up at a Church Yard Sale. $10 for a working organ.

They sound excellent. I like 6L6s for sound. Nice, smooth, and plenty of power. I'm looking for tubes for them now. I might have the tubes in stock. If not I'm working on a trade for a bunch of my old TV and Radio tubes with a guy I met on Ebay and he's checking his stock.

They will get polished up and looking good when I'm ready to put them into full time use.

I've got another pair with EL34s in them. I made wood cases and painted the chassis black. I love the sound of them also. The Triad trannys make nice noise.

    PhilMays:

Duel runs of Kimber 8TC to mains and center speaker. Cost at around $12 per foot. 56 ft x $12 = $670 +/-. AR Masters Series to Surrounds around Rear Center $250. Total speaker cable costs roughly $1,000 with tax.

Look on other peoples faces while reading this who used zipcord....priceless!

I sure wish I had that money back and simply used 12 guage "regular" speaker cable at perhaps $50 as I could tell no REAL difference
    .

Thanks for the honesty. I don't feel so ashamed I couldn't tell the difference in the high dollar wire. I thought something was wrong with me. I'm running 14 guage GE wire now from HH Gregg. About $16 for 100' if I remember correctly.

  8. Mine has an arrow on it pointing "up". Sorry, just had to say this.

    Chuckled as I read it!

Guess I'd better call BEC and see if he has replacement arrows. I can't find 'em on the cabs.

The Crown PS400s and IC150 were harsh on my ears with stock CWs. I had the speakers sitting about 8 feet in front of me spaced less than 8 feet apart in my apartment. Bass in the face was plenty and the horns weren't shoved in my ears. Yea Duke I know, The IC150s are "ICY 150s". I love Crown Amps. Just prefer tubes as I rust away in my old age. I'm less tolerant of crap in my life as I get older. Cranky old fart here. Still love to rock, but playing golf is almost as good as running the bars "picking one out of the herd". I know I'm getting old. As much hair on my ears as on my head. I'm so old I remember when the only porn available was just graffitti on the walls of caves. Tubes, horns, and old age I guess.

  9. It's crazy how occupied children can make you. I never thought I'd become the man who looks forward to Friday night simply to enjoy a couple killer movies. I'm such a dork!

    Tommyboy,

Yep! And you'll probably be hearing the little "Ghost" since he's not there. Amazing how you get used to listening for all the little noises they make.

Enjoy the flicks and sound system. Rare solitude for a parent.

  10. heat rising over the city can cause storms to stop at your front door Harry. If they are coming in from the south-west, they do seem to hover just at the south side of Indy don't they?

Wierd how things seem to have changed around here. I'm thinking it may be because of the new structures but I guess I'm looking to second guess or just trying to reason with the unreasonable.

I'm gonna try a pic on the new Vista load while I'm here. 1st time for pic transfer with the new software. Patience please and thanks for all the thoughts.

  11. I've got Valencias in the bedroom. I've got the Cornwall redeisgned in my main listening room. I listen to both constantly. I like the overall performance on the Cornwall for daily listening. I think they're a lot more versatile. At night at lower volumes I listen to the Valencias in bed while reading or just re-hashing the day. The Vals are smoother at lower volumes to me. Hence the bedtime listening. The Cornwalls can't be beat for versatility or quality. I run tube power only and it smooths out the beasts in both.

Easy question depending on listening factors. Cornwalls By Klipsch. You can't beat them if you have the choice of only 1 pair of speakers.

  12. System size isnt an issue at all. 2 gb ram, 360gb hd, big AMD 64 Live Pro duo processor, Gforce GT, Lightscribe writers, Nvidia, 9 USBs, yadda, yadda, yadda. More than I or the Vista need. It's just not usable for my applications. It is fine I'm sure for most applications just not "my cup o' tea". If I went out and spent another $500-$1000 on peripherals I'm sure it could be compatable.

Like was stated. Give the industry time to catch up.

I checked on compatability and was assured it would all work fine. Boy, did they ever see me coming!

I bought it at Circuit Schitty. Good price. $1199 demo for less than $500 after rebates.

Hd was scrubbed off the Firedog and fresh load on the Vista.

I'm still trying to patch and adjust settings but there's always another bridge or roadblock in my path. I'ts easy to use just there's a lot of garbage I have no use for nor want to use. I doubt the average user will need all this extra STUFF either. I sure don't like it.

  13. Many insurance companies consider a lighting strike to be an "act of god" not to be covered by any policy.

I'm not so sure some insurance companies don't make up the rules as they go. They seem to have a bit of leeway in "interpretation" as it were!

    Harry

  14. I'm sure most of the problems are just unfamiliar territory for me. Still there are compatability issues. Software incompatability on my cameras and scanner. Also it's picky about virus protection and malware searches. I've had loading issues that no matter where the settings are placed downloads are blocked or stopped. Even when download is complete it reads some files as invalad domain. I'm not sure they have all the bugs out of the OS just yet. I'll wait another 5 years or so and try it again maybe. (yea right). I used to use the Mac in the office and I like Mac alot but again price is an issue at times. Laptops are out of the question for these old hands. To get a large enough keyboard I might as well carry around a standard sized one.

This is the second time these power conditioners have been hit. They've saved my amps and gear twice in the last 6 weeks or so. They were quite a bit more than $200 each though. On the one that burnt up I had a surge protector after the conditioner. I was also using Variacs for power safety and regulation on some of my other gear. The strike also fried the strip/surge protector. I'm not plugging in my equipment until I replace the conditioners so I won't find out for sure if my equipment is 100% ok. I plugged them in just long enough to power them up and give them a quick test. Crossing my fingers all is well.

I was told that once they have been hit like this they should be replaced as they have already substained damage to the protection circuits. For real? Even if they seem to work alright?

  15. The new industrial complex is WNW of me about 1/4 mile away. All asphalt. I'm not knowledgeable in these areas. If it's raining I'll put on a hat or a coat if it's cold rain or I'll stay in if I can. If it's hot i'll strip off some clothes or go inside to the A/C. That's about the extent of my expertise of the elements.

It wery well may just be weather pattens but it's been common enough lately to take notice of.

  16. When you buy it wrapped in plastic in the store someone killed it ?

    Life isn't fair is it?

In a food processing plant the pig would probably be lucky to be killed before it was skinned and butchered alive. Let's not even get started about chickens being wire tied in a productive perch to lay eggs until they die. They're then "Tysoned" to the grocery store.

Enjoy your McDonalds. Isn't veal fantastic tasting? Stick the calf in a stall so it can't move and get "muscular" and veggie feed it so it tastes good.

I seldom hunt anymore. Like Old Buckster I've done my share. I don't show my "manhood" in this way. I raise a family and pay the bills now. I do however "get off" with More Power on audio. I just destroy our environment by using more fossil fuels.

I've seen 30 deer in a small ravine that have starved to death. I've seen deer by the dozens starved to death by over population in a local state park. My personal opinion is I'm horrified by murdering any of gods creatures in a fence. As a country boy I guess I see it as a "City fellers" way of huntin'. I grew up hunting, butchering for meat, and raising livestock for the same purposes. I'm glad we're on top of the food chain. I don't want my head on somethings wall. And yes I have my trophys hanging on the wall. It didn't lead me to kiling humans. Everything trophy on the wall was eaten by me and my family and friends.

At10 years old I had my own rifle. I was taught as a boy what it was for. Respect was the #1 priority taught. It was to put food on the plate and protect the farm and family from predators. Daddy would give me three or four .22 shells and I'd better bring home a couple of squirrels, rabbits, or whatever was supper.

There are many different environments we all grow up in. In the aforementioned article this is a normal way of life in some of our cultures. I grew up a farm boy. We raised hogs, cattle, tobacco, and normal crops. We also sold our hardwood trees, sold mineral rights, gas rights, etc. Farming is not a "sterile" life. It's a life on the land. Taking what is given to us to survive.

Life isn't always fair in the real world. I don't see me turning strictly a vegetarian so I turn my head to it and don't like to think about the way my food is processed.

Let's be fair. Unless we are vegetarians there isn't much difference really. Is there?

    Harry

  17. I've been living in this general area for about 15 years now. Storms and bad weather have basically passed up by. Last year a new building complex was built in a valley close to me. It seems like the "storm path" changed and the more severe weather has concentrated in this area. There seems to be a "rain line" you can see on a regular basis now. It's like there is a line where the rain stops you can see. It's the same place. Dry on one side of the street and wet on the other. It's like this regularly.

Can man made normal structures change weather paths?

    Perplexed,

    Harry

  18. Thanks OB.

Just "another day at the office". No big deal. I guess it's been my turn to bite the "sh.. stick". I've got a mouthful lately.

My insurance company and adjuster have been great. I've been with them for over 20 years and this is only my second claim.

In all fairness I think Vista has some good ideas from a security standpoint but I doubt it will be tolerated by the average user. I know I'm trashing this unfriendly OS.
