  1. Morning all,

My PC was fried by lightning Saturday afternoon. It got my microwave, fridge, dishwasher, and a couple of other small items. Hopefully that's all. The bolt hit my back porch just a couple of feet from my back door. It blew a hole in the concrete on my porch. It also fried my power conditioners. My audio equipment seems ok so far.

I bought a new PC. It's got the Vista OS on it. How could Windows actually think this is an Operating System that anyone could like? This IMHO has to be worse than Windows ME. What a step back for them. Compatability is horrible. Every click finds you having to give permission to continue with your choices. I've got this thing running just enough to say hi and I'm going to wipe this crappy OS off and reload my XP Pro back.

I'll reload tonight and hopefully all will be back to normal tomorrow.

  2. Welcome to Klipsch World.

I've passed on my SDAs also. I like Polk and have had about every speaker they make. Next favorite would be the Monitor 10 and 7A. I'm gonna presume you're running tubes with the SDA. I'm now running a Cornwall Mod that I built. Part Cornwall and part Chorus cabinet size. You'll love the Cornwall sound after you get it set up. Easy placement and about as versatile for different types of music as there is going to be out of a single pair of speakers. The horns will take a bit of getting used to after the Peerless or silk domes. You will find nicer all around sound and music you never knew was available on your recordings. They're that big a jump over the SDAs. The sound is much larger also. The foot pring is a bit larger but I doubt you'll notice it. They may even seem smaller because of the height difference. The Chorus and Chorus 2s are nice speakers but can be a bit better for rocking out.

You can usually pick up a nice pair of Cornwalls (CW) for $400 and up depending on condition. Parts are plentiful and cheap for them. Freshness of crossovers is as important as anything on the old Heritage line. BEC/Bob Crites has about anything you can imagine parts wise with "WISE" being the key word. There are others here with all you need but Bob has been great to me and I'm a faithful type.

This is a super forum. The guys (and gals) are great and very helpful. They/we go out of our way to help in anyway we can. It's a fantastic family here. We argue like family sometimes too. I'm sure you'll feel right at home with Klipsch.

We've got a "Pilgrimage" here in Indy this month. A bunch of the members are meeting here to enjoy the world of Klipsch. Details on the home page.

Again Welcome. Glad to have ya here.

  3. Harry - What about drugs like valium, t-3, otc sleeping pills, benedryl, etc to take the edge off?

Let me check the statute of limitations before I answer........tick tock tick tock....

    Ok, Back.

1: I've got a kid to raise. Just me and no one else to do it.

2: I've tried numerous "remedies". What works best for me is cold turkey. I have found pleasure in many substances and I'm not going to swap habits at this point in my life. As a child of the 60's I learned a lot of escapes. I quit that stuff in '77. Not that I had to or wanted to, I guess I'm just so cheap. It seemed like the "Better living through chemistry" was more expensive every day and the quality went down. It just wasn't cost effective anymore. Just teasing and being a smart A$$. No, It's just cold turkey for me. Kind of a kick in the pants reminder of what a bunch of money hungry Murderers will do to you for a buck. I'm stupid and an addict to tobacco. Hang the tobacco execs and supporting politicians.

I thought I could save money by quitting. I'm spending so much money on cleaning supplies it would have been cheaper to smoke. My Gosh it reaks of smoke in here. Makes me sick. I need a smoke. But won't do it!

    Cough! Cough!

  4. Well,

Clean since midnight Saturday. I've kicked the cat, cussed the parson, took my ex on a date, broke a tooth grinding my teeth, and scrubbing down the stinky everything I've been around. Bunch of meddling &^%&$ so and so's. See what you started. You can go "suck up and bust"

This ain't easy boys and girls. Last time I quit was for 3 years. Then the old ball and chain left me, I started running the bars and WHAM, lit back up. I don't drink anymore. Maybe this time. Maybe. I've been smoking since I was 7 years old. I grew up on a farm. Tobacco was one of our main crops until we were paid just as much not to grow the stuff.

I want to break something. My legs are shaking, I can't focus, and I'm not fit for any social contact, I've gnawed off my nails and I'm not a nail biter. Cold turkey. I need a drink, I want a smoke,................I'm gonna scream. AAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh fudge!!

  5. MIghty Thebes,

Some pursuits may be treacherous. Travel with care my friend.

I wasn't sure of the meaning either so I emailed an old friend by the name of Malaprop. I received an explanation above my understanding.

I shall search a different media for my answer.

Luck and Godspeed in your adventures.

Keep the quill damp and let word reach us of this new undertaking.

I'm still looking up the word "Vaginarian"

  6. Phil,

I bought my equipment from Dish Network. Less than $200 installed. NO contract!!!! Same price as on the contract. If I don't want service anymore I just call and cancel. NO penalties. I've had super service, a great product, and NO problems at all with Dish Network.

DirecTV can kiss my b... QQQQ DirecTV that's 4Q DirecTV

  7. Thank you for the Audiogon link. I've been looking there and on Ebay.

I don't know the seller or the preamp either one. Buying used I'm very cautious. Call me faithful or leary but I'd rather do business here on the Klipsch forum where I find myself having complete trust in the members here.

I had considered the JM BBX but I wanted a silver finish and didn't see the option available on the site. I ended up ordering another McAlister Preamp to match my McAlister PP-150 amp. I talked to Peter M on the phone yesterday and the Pre is a couple of weeks away from assembly. I'm also getting the newest design of his preamp. Great person to deal with in all areas. www.mcalisteraudio.com is a must to check out for a super audio product. I love my Macs but soundwise the McAlister PP-150 is No.1 here.

  8. Whew!!

The Pas-2 is back up and running. Both channels up and even again. My expertise in changing parts got it up again. I've no idea what fixed it. Luck is as good as knowledge at times. I've had it running all day. Clear as a "bell"

I'm still interested in another tube preamp. I am going to rebuild the old Heathkit pre but I basically freaked out not having my system not sounding like it can and should.

I am still looking for a decent tube preamp. I'm not going to be caught with my pants (pre) down again.

I've got a pair of Belles and a couple of pairs of LS I might be willing to trade (not all of them) for a good preamp if I can't buy one soon. Last resort though.

  9. Come to think of it now, there was also an optional 30" woofer. The cone I believe was made of foam. I read the military was doing experiments with it as a "Sonic Weapon". I saw a couple on Ebay a year or so ago. I think the seller wanted around $3,000 for it alone. He may have had two new in the box total. Also a used one sold for $1,800. Best I can remember.

    Harry

  10. The 700s had an 18 woofer, optional T-350 horn tweet instead of the T-35, and the Ionovac ultra purple glowing gas tweeter by DuKane. This model will have an extra amplifier for the Ionovac on the same side as the L-Pads. It will mount down low next to the floor. I've sold 2 pairs and a single in the last year. $5,000.00 for one pair, $8,500 on the nicer second pair and $2,500 for the 700 single. Mine were all working excellent when sold. I sent Arfandbark, BEC, and maybe Colter pics of them before I sold them. They may still have the pics. I may still have complete literature copies of the original sales and service brochures laying around. I should.

I'd love to see the pics.

  11. Sorry I must be lost on the conversation now.

I went to get a pair of rectifier caps and just got back. I don't see how it could cause my problem but one was definitely bad. I've noticed the Stereo Blend (monophonic/stereo) switch is totally not working. I'm working in that area right now trying to run down the problem. I don't do enough of this stuff anymore to be efficient at it. I ought to stick to "rotary dail tv's". It's about my speed anymore.

Anybody ever ran into this before? Losing a channel and the blend switch not changing?

    Harry

  12. Never mind. It's shot. Nada output. tubes are good. I'll continue to try to revive the Pas-2. Working on it between posts. That's why I'm a bit slow with the replies.

At this point I'm still looking for a TUBE preamp for a month or so.

    Thanks,

    Harry

  13. Ok Duke,

I tried the Crown IC150 first. ok, nothing special. Next the McIntosh C26. Much better but still lifeless. Yamaha C90. YUK! Yamaha C40. I can't use that kind of language on here. I just hooked up an old Heathkit preamp and threw in a set of good tubes in it. I'd forgotten about it until I looked up the model #s so I could reply to your post. I bought it on Ebay a couple of months ago for the Original Mullards in it. I don't know if it works or not. I don't see a model # on it. It has the steel top finished off in an "Alligator black skin" vinyl. Any ideas what it might be. Heck, i'll post a pic of it in a sec.

  14. Duke,

I've got a couple of high end SS pre's. It just ain't the same partner. Not even close. I'm spoiled. I might as well listen to a transistor radio or boombox. I wouldn't expect much out of them so I wouldn't be disappointed.

    Harry

  15. I just went down and bought enough parts to patch up the Pas-2. Maybe. Just guessing mind you. I have the original assembly book for it. Seems Like I'll have to put on the tri-focals and actually work on something of my own.

Yep, That's the plan. Arf and I have decided to stay sober and out of jail if at all possible. Heck OB, come on down. 3 hots and a cot await.

I'll probably be incarcerated 4th of July weekend anyway. A half dozen of my old USMC buddies come into town for the holiday and stay for a week or so. It has been known to happen. I guess I should call ahead and make reservations at the Marion County Jail for the 4th. Avoid the rush.

I'll layout a deposit to borrow a good Pre If anyone has one fairly local. I'm not allergic to interstates.

    hbailey1@earthlink.net

    thanks guys. (gals)

  16. I just checked their site and didn't see a straight preamp. Anything else around?

    Help!

I've got 4 SS pre amps but I can't listen to my music like this. So much of the sound is gone. It just sounds dead and flat. The live sound is missing.

    Sick in Indy

  17. Tears on my pillow! My old Pas-2 preamp gave up the ghost last night. Original 1960. No mods, original tubes. Not bad for a 46 year old piece of electronics. Left channel died. I'm going to rebuild it and I'll order the boards and caps today.

I need a Tube preamp NOW. I just ordered a new one and It's being built or in line to be built now. But it may be a month or even more.

Anyone got a decent tube Preamp that they want to sell or loan me until my new one arrives. I'm in Indy. I hate buying one just to use for a month or so.

If you're close I'll hop in the truck and head that way.

    Thank you

  18. Any Photos? Please!

I must be a sick person. I got a pretty good chuckle out of this Phil. My apologies. It's just a fleeting picture of plaster flying and a look of "Holy crap" on your face. I hope you're ok.

I wonder if the dish installers have a Pool on the best install of the day. That's a story worth retelling.
