  1. Here is a picture of the room. Probably does not do it justice, but I have limited space in between the center speaker and the mains. Its going to be a matter of listening for sure, but based on this picture how would you set up the subwoofer? Thanks Dave
  2. Hi being new to this and having my first Sub on order , I wish to get your input on sub placement. I have heard of the listenining postion sub placement then moving around the room till you hear the sub giving a nice all round spectrum without being boomy and putting the sub in that area. Most of the sub placement photos I have seen and read, suggest to put the subs in between the center and fronts. I have a restriction where my Rf-7 speakers really take up most of the front wall (13feet wide) and there is at most a 19' gap between my entertainment cabinet and two fronts, thus no space for subwoofer. My room has some restrictions. My right wall is pretty open with power outlet, my left wall is pretty open and next to my couch there is also a place and behind the couch there is an open area approx 5 feet from couch. Do you suggest just experimenting or is there a next best placement for a sub besides the very front which is not possible in my situation? My room is 17X13 feet. Thx Dave
  3. Dr Who, My explanation was vague with regards to my children and port vs sealed. What I meant was that I would like to find something that seems enclosed, so that the driver doesnt show obvious to the children. The area where the subwoofer would be one can see before walking into the room, so my kids have tendency to play or be in that area at times. Where the fronts are in the room, the kids dont like to go to the very front as its "dark and scary" they say. So I was looking for a sub where the driver is less exposed, and when I initially thought sealed vs ports I had this image in my mind that sealed means one cannot see the drivers. The edesign seems interesting, do they have a pretty good sub? I dont mind pushing price to $799. I was just looking up an SVS PB 12 - Plus too. Thanks much for your input. Dave
  4. Thanks Southern, and BobbyT Bobby I think I am going to go with the Titanic, as I looked into the threads from a while back and you own one and really like it. To me its a toss up between the outlaw LFM-1 and the Titanic, however I do have children and if I see correctly the Titanic is sealed and not ported? I have never done a DIY before - the kit you mentioned is that all I need or do I need to stuff it with something else? Also at this point I dont have surrounds, so I am thinking if I should get this sub or surrounds first? I watch a lot of movies:) Right now I have 2X RF-7, RC-64, Emotiva IPS-1 AMP (150W x7) (on its way) and Emotiva LMC-1. (on its way) Thanks Daveb Dave
  5. Guys, Thanks for the information. You are correct the Rf-7 does go pretty low. This Dayton Subwoofer above looks very nice for the price at $580self built, can anyone vouch for the quality and is it easy to set up? How does it perform with movies etc? My room is 17X13, and I definately want it to blend in with the rf-7. Also Southern what SVS model are you using? Other brands that I am considering is as follows: Outlaw Audio LFM - 1 EX or Plus series (They have a sale at $549) Velodyne DLS 5000 R ($799) HSU VTF 3 - MK3 without the Turbocharger.($699) I welcome your input and especially wish to know if the Dayton DIY Subwoofer is worth it. Outlaw price is good too. Which to pick that will match well with RF-7? Thanks Dave
  6. Hi, I have a pair of Rf-7's and so excited to hook them up after waiting all this while. I have purchased the RC-64 for center and I am now looking at a good subwoofer in the mid $600 - $800 range. My room is approx 17X13 feet. I am looking for a Sub that has the following characteristics: home theatre (80%) but needs to be musical Blend in well with Rf-7 and RC-64 Looking for very good detail even at low volume (Dont want to have it crank it up to hear bass) Good lower frequencies, but doesnt have to shake the house ( I dont want to make the neighbors mad:) I have never owned a sub. I heard good things about SVS, HSU, Velodyne, but according to my description what would seem like a good fit. What have you used and based on experience what can you highly recommend? Thanks Dave
  7. Arky, Thanks for explaining this. I appreciate it. Nuxx great to see another Austinite:) My budget for AMP and Pre-Pro will be around $2000 by the time I am ready to purchase in November. Dave
  8. Ok Thanks everyone, seems like the RMX 850 amp gives a good bang for the buck. Till now I have also been uneducated and dont know for the life of me why this did not register in my mind. For some reason I thought I had to purchase two power amps for each left and right speaker, but most of these have two channels, which means I only have to buy 1 amp for both the Rf-7 left and right. idefinately am thinking of such seperates because of the Rf-7 low impedance dip. Question: If I went for a power amp for the two fronts, and later got a receiver for the rest or got a different manuf amp and processor combo for the rest, wont there be a discoloration of sound between the fronts and the rest of the system? I welcome your thoughts. Dave
  9. Guys, This has been a great thread. As of to date I have the following: RF-7 fronts RC-64 - Center I took everyones advise and read through these forums over the past couple of months and decided to treat my room first. I appreciate everyones posts here including Dr. Who, Arky, Fish amongst others. I am now all complete building my own acoustic panels, and they will act as bass traps, absorbers and also one diffuser in my small room. I have stumbled upon the QSC RMX 850 pro-amp as its a decent price. I have read many posts and really am considering this route. On the other hand I want to wait to see what Emotiva or Outlaw comes up with the end of the year/early next year. Does anyone have experience or know enough if this QSC RMX 850 will work with the Rf-7's? Or any advice since this post has developed? I will probably be ready to purchase these items by late November. Thanks Dave
  10. clspruiell - I think it looks great. You did a great job, and those speakers stand out! I am still in the process of converting a regular room (upstairs), into a home theatre/media room. I have to seal off a window, and just built a frame and insulated it. I have just completed my own acoustic panels too. I purchased 96SF = 12 panels of Knaupf Rigid Fiberglass board. You can use rock wool too. I purchased this in a 1 inch thickness, and then just layered two such boards for bass traps at 2 inch thickness. I bought my fabric at Hobby Lobby and Walmart. The total project for the panels + fabric cost me $160. I have just completed it this weekend. I received several quotes online and the lowest cost came to around $1800, and that is excluding a diffuser that I am interested in building. I think you can do much room treatment for little money, and there are quite a bit of different fabrics out there that are open type weave but that look very pleasing to the eye. Good luck, Dave
  11. Thanks UFObuster, I think I will still save and go for seperates as you suggest. I took the advice here and its just a matter of time, to save and get what I really want. I will experiment with different placements. Dave
  12. Thanks Fish, Thats pretty much how I have it set up right now. Now just to save and get that receiver or seperates:) Dave
  13. Hi Everyone, It has been quite a journey here. I started with an interest in Klipsch for many years, however never had the means of owning a pair. After much help from this Forum I have purchased my first offical pair of Rf-7 speakers a few months back (Maple) . I have also aquired the RC-64. At this point I am like a kid in a candy Jar except the jar is locked and I cannot open it! What torture this is. I have the speakers but no amp yet. I am saving money for Seperates or a killer receiver for these RF-7 speakers, but I will revive my other thread for that. I have recently converted a room for home theare (70%) and music (30%). This brings me to the question of the front placement. 1) Do I position the speakers to fit in the front corners, thus at an angle? (It does point pretty much to the listening position) OR 2) Do I position the front speakers not to sit in the corners but rather just face the listener in a straight line also pointing to listening position (meaning speaker is against the front walls and not in corners at all) What will give me the best results? My room is 17.5 X 13 feet. Thanks Dave
  14. Thanks UFO Buster, I am now convinced to go with seperates, just need to make up my mind as you say with a good starting point on what to aquire first. All the best, Dave
  15. Everyone thanks for your replies. I am learning much. So separates sounds like the way to go, and I see there are good threads with these pro-amps. I want to know if I did get a Pro-amp such as a Crown or QSC, they push much to bring these RF-7's to a new level. However would I sacrifice the rest of the system if I only purcahse let say one of these QSC 2 channel amps and ran the rest off of a Receiver? I love music and movies and would probably listen to music in two channel only. However when it comes to Home Theatre I want the best set up for what I can afford. Thus would i cause a misbalance if I put so much power on the fronts that it would overpower the rest? I currently have new Rf-7's and an RC-64. I welcome your input. Dave
  16. Thanks for the info so far and keep it coming. Please educate me on the following: I want a 7.1 suround system later and will probably start with 5.1. If I go with these AMPS, I see it only as 2 channel so that means it it will only be for the Rf-7 pair? How will this help me with Home Theater in 7.1? I mean wouldnt my two fronts be too overpowering for the center? RC-64 in this case and too powerfull for surrounds? I want to maintain good balance. I guess I want to make sure that I dont buy this AMP and it's only for 2 channels and the rest of the channels sound so less powerfull? How would you get around this? - as I was going to go with a home theatre 7X channel decicated amp., but now you have me thinking otherwize. Also on the Klipsch RF-7 specs it says 250 Watts Max. If you use a higher power amp than 250 Watts wont it damage the speaker? I welcome your input on this and to learn as much as I can. Thanks, Dave
  17. IndyKlipschFan Thanks for the reply. I am in Austin, TX Dave
  18. All, I have been very impressed with the amount of knowledge on this forum. I have read many posts describing the different manufacturers of amps, processors, and what some of your preferences are. I just recently purchased the RF-7, and also got a good deal on the RC-64 Center. I dont have a subwoofer as of yet, and would like to use my RF-7's bass as much as possible. This morning as I got out of bed, I decided I want to go with Seperates! (I was very close to buying a Receiver) My needs: I am looking for Seperates that will not cost me more than $2000. I want Seperates The living area is approx 17.5 X 13. This will mainly be used for HT but also for music. I will mainly be doing a 5 channel for now, but want room for 7X channel. I was going to hold off till HDMI v 1.3, but I think that seperates will still work great with an Component/DVI or HDMI connector. I am a Movie Soundtrack Junkie. Although I love movies, somehow when I watch a movie, it is the Score or soundtrack that really does it for me along with special effects of course. Wish to utilize RF-7 capability and bass as much as possible (until I get a subwoofer later, but I know the neigbors will complain:)) Dont want RF-7 to sound too harsh. I am not totally understanding the technical details with regards to RF-7, but I read a post where Dr. Who spoke about these Low impedence dips the RF-7 has and to use a high current amp. The way I understand this is that the current is more important than the Wattage?. I looked at the Outlaw 7075 AMP and its only 75 W x 7 channels with a Outlaw Processor like the Pre. Pro 990? I also looked at the NAD T973 AMP and specs looked good. I welcome your input, and other suggestions of Amps worth looking at. I want to get the best I can afford with a low noise as possible and enjoy those movies. I welcome your input and suggestions based on my above needs. Dave
  19. Groto, glad you brought this up. I also had a hard time finding an RC-7 but in maple or black. They are hard to come by. I called the Klipsch Technical Support and told him about my dilemma. He has done much A/B testing with RC-7 and RC-64 and told me to go with the RC-64 if I cannot find a RC-7. He found that the RC-64 matched extremely well. It was just a bit smoother or "neutral" in the higher frequency, but nothing you will notice with a mismatch in timbre. He said the RC-64 is a very good match. He also recommended the RC-35 if you wanted to go a little less. I just made my purchase on the RC-64 and I think that there are other users, that are very happy with this combination. The one thing you need to consider is the size of this thing. I believe its 8' in height and 33' wide. A big monster. I also corresponded with Professor.Ham.Slap and he is very satisfied with this combination. Maybe he will step in here and give us his results. I just bought mine and it wont be rigged up until we move into our new home. Dave
  20. Indy, Thanks much for your recommendations. My dilemma is that these Centers C-7 are hard to come by. I found a place that sells them, however they want to charge me $700 for a new C-7. I have been told that they should be selling new if I can get one in the $450-$500 range. Today I spoke to Klipsch Technician, and asked him if I cannot find a C-7 if the new RC-64 will be worthwile pursuing. He explained that he did A/B comparisons and to him the C-7 and RC-64 are very close and the RC-64 will be a great match with the RF-7. He only mentioned that the RC-64 has a more neutral sound, especially the high end, but as far as the timber match, it matches quite well. (He actually prefers the RC-64 with the RF-7) Thus, I guess I am just going to look and see what opportunity arises with regards to cost. If I find a C-7 for a good price, I will take it. If I find an RC-64 for a good price, I will take it. I think either of these will be a perfect match for the RF-7. Thanks everyone for your help. Dave
  21. Thanks, I will definately let you know about my RF-7 experience. I have a very wide genre of music appreciation, and my wife loves Movies:) I started another thread with looking at a good center for the Rf-7. Yes JVC is very old and I will have to use it for a little while. All the best, Dave
  22. Thanks for your input guys. Yes its hard to find a RC-7 around here. I find many in Cherry wood, but that would clash the Maple fronts I have. I have read a post or two, where a user combined the RF-7 with the newer RC-64. It sounds like this could be an option, but I really dont want to compromise my system. The poster mentioned that he liked the RC-64 and didnt hear any misbalance in timbre with RC-64 and RF7. Anyone who has heard the RC-7 or RC-64, or what they think about this RF-7 and RC-64 combo? Thanks, Dave
  23. Thanks, I guess I should have rephrased my original question. I bought a pair of Rf-7 in maple. There arent alot of RC-7 in maple/black for sale. Thus I am looking at building up the rest of my system (not any time soon) with the new Reference series for center, sub and surrounds. I am just not sure if this will cause any misbalancing with these RF-7's. Any users did this? Your input is appreciated. Dave
  24. Hi I just recently purchased the RF-7 speakers. What would be a good choice for a Center Speaker to keep the system well balanced with RF-7? Thanks, Dave
  25. Dr Who. A small bookshelf pair of KLH speakers. My wife purchased these for me at that time. She was as much into this buying decision with the RF-7 as I was. She loves HT and music. Thanks once again! We are exited. Arky, I live in Austin. I am stuck at the airport (Little Rock, AR). My flight got cancelled for flying into DFW. I am flying out to Austin this morning. All the best, Dave
